10．In 1947a group of famous people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music，dance and theatre in Edinburgh．The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War．
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness，Richard Burton，Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras（交響樂團(tuán)）．It became a fixed event every  August and now attracts 400，000people yearly．

Soon，groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University，and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge，Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theatre by littleknown writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh．
Today the"Fringe"，once less recognized，has far outgrown the festival with around 1，500performances of theatre，music and dance on every one of the 21days it lasts．And yet as early as 1959，with only 19theatre groups performing，some said it was getting too big．
A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971，and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150during August  itself．In 2004there were 200places housing 1，695shows by over 600different groups from 50different countries．More than 1.25million tickets were sold．

What technological device would do，any of this？I don't want to go back to the Stone Age，but I'm also worried about a world run by machines．Sometimes when you're chatting with someone，you discover things you need to know．Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child．Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired．
Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine．But they lack an element so important to everyday life．
Call it the spirit，the soul or the heart．It is something no machine will ever have．It is being human that prompts us to smile at others，which may be what they need at that moment．

8．James Dean was not very tall-he was less than average height．He had thick，light brown hair and blue eyes．He was so near-sighted that he could hardly see anything without his glasses．

In spite of his poor eyesight，he loved driving fast motorcycles and even faster sports cars．A few days after he finished Giant，on September 25，1955，Dean went for a drive in his new Porsche．It was evening and the light was poor．Dean was not wearing his glasses．Suddenly，he saw a car in front of him．It was slowing down and trying to turn off the highway．Dean tried to slow down too，but it was too late．He hit the car at high speed and was killed immediately．
Two German girls killed themselves when they heard the news because"life would be unbearable without him．"A few years later，a New York salesclerk wrote a book called Jimmy Dean  Returns in which she claimed that she was in contact with Dean from the other side of the grave．Half a million copies of the book were sold．It was only the beginning of a strange legend（傳奇）that goes on，even today．
