20.Cigarette smoking kills.That we know.So,manufactures made electronic cigarettes as a safer smoking choice---safer than tobacco.
E-cigarettes contain the drug nicotine like cigarettes.But they do not use tobacco.And you do not light (33)them.They are powered by battery.
So,if e-cigarettes are so safe,why have poison control centers around the United States seen an increase(34)in telephone calls about e-cigarette poisonings?The answer is children.
Most of the calls are from people worried about children who have played with the devices.In the period of one month this year,the United States Centers for Disease Control say 215people called the Center with e-cigarette concerns.More than half of these calls were for children(35)aged(age) five and younger.The devices apparently had made them sick.
Tim McAfee is director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health.He says the problem is regulation,meaning the U.S.Federal government does not control e-cigarettes(36)even if/even though they contain liquid nicotine.
Mr.McAfee adds that liquid nicotine is a well-known danger.
"Nicotine historically has been used as a pesticide in the United States.And that's where we have really had for many,many decades significant poisonings when people got exposed to nicotine that was in liquid solutions."
Mr.McAfee explains that nicotine poisoning happens(37)when the substance gets into the skin,gets into the eyes or is swallowed.Even a small amount,he says,(38)canmake a person sick.Nicotine poisoning can cause stomach pain or a sense of imbalance.Headaches and seizures (突發(fā)疾病)are also common sighs of nicotine poisoning.And too much nicotine can kill.
Tim McAfee says e-cigarettes do not create the level of risk to people as tobacco products do.He notes that almost 500,000Americans die each year from cigarettes.
"So,cigarettes are the winner in that contest.And we don't really know what's going to happen with e-cigarettes."
E-cigarettes do not contain hundreds of harmful chemicals(39)that/which are found in real cigarettes.So,the U.S.Surgeon General has suggested that e-cigarettes may be a useful tool for adults(40)trying(try) to end their tobacco use,or quit.
But McAfee worries that teenagers may think electronic cigarettes are harmless.They could become addicted,or hooked,on the nicotine and then start smoking real cigarettes.In other words,he fears that for young people fake (假裝)e-cigarettes could be a"gateway"to the real thing.

E-cigarettes contain the drug nicotine like cigarettes.But they do not use tobacco."
36.even if/even though     考查從屬連詞   本句的意思:他說,問題在于監(jiān)管,即使電子香煙里含有液體尼古丁,聯(lián)邦政府也沒有控制它們;本句是一個讓步狀語從句,故填even if/even though"即使,盡管"
39.that/which      考查關(guān)系代詞       根據(jù)句意"電子煙不含有在真正的香煙中發(fā)現(xiàn)的數(shù)百種的有害化學(xué)物質(zhì)"可知,本句是定語從句;先行詞 hundreds of harmful chemicals(數(shù)百種的有害化學(xué)物質(zhì))指物,在從句中作主語,故填taht/which

A student walks into his first class and realizes he forgot all about the midterm exam. He knows he needs to bring his grades up, and getting a zero will make it nearly impossible. He quickly jots down some notes and shoves them under his lap hoping it will help him pass. Cheating is a major concern in all academic environments. Students are creating new and more outrageous(令人吃驚的)ways of cheating every day: some claim that certain accounts of cheating can be justified, but overall it can always be prevented.

Cheating has been around forever, and millions of ways to cheat have been fashioned. Copying homework and cheat sheets are some of the most basic ways students in all education levels have cheated. Some students think nothing about writing a few answers on their hand, in a gum wrapper, or boldly using a study guide to cheat. Desperate students have even gone as far as to steal the test or scan in bottle wrappers and put answers into the nutrition label. The internet has now become available in almost every location. Computers can be accessed at school, at home, and now even on cell phones. This opens a doorway for even more methods of cheating to be born.

There are countless opinions on whether or not cheating can be justified. The truth is this behavior will always be a matter of opinion with each scenario of cheating. Students often rationalize their cheating by claiming they forgot to look over the material or did not understand what the teacher or professor was saying. Some may counter these arguments by saying that the student could have set reminders or asked the teacher to explain the material before the day of the test. Some other reasons students believe cheating is justified are their heavy workloads and trying to find time for school, sports, friends, and family. This may be true in certain instances, however, all students have these problems, and it is unfair to the students refrain(制止) from cheating when the student who is dishonest receives a better grade. The majority of students who think cheating is acceptable may believe the reason for this is that sometimes students are unaware they are cheating, there is not enough time given for assignments, or that the information is too much for the course.

It may be difficult to accomplish, hut cheating can be prevented. 1'eachers and professors have tried many options to stop cheating. These options can range anywhere from simply spreading test-takers out in a room, to expelling(驅(qū)逐)a student, which will most likely hinder their plans of getting into another college. One simple way to fix the problem is to scold the student when caught. They may be so scared or embarrassed that they never do it again. This is a risky way to prevent cheating in some cases, however, because it can possibly damage self-esteem. Another simple way 10 avoid cheating is to create many different kinds of the same test. This prohibits students from getting the answers off of a neighbor's test, but students still have the option of using other cheating tactics.

There may be a million ways to cheat and get away with it, but there are few times, if any, that it is justified. Cheating never has to be a necessity and is never worth compromising morals and losing years worth of working towards a degree. This problem is spreading throughout America; with everyone's help, it can be stopped.

5."Beauty is only skin deep."This expression means that beauty is only a temporary surface quality.And some beauty products can cause lasting damage that goes far below the surface of the skin.
In the United States,many people use sunlight and non-natural light to darken their skin.Health experts advise against what is called"tanning"because of its links to skin cancer.In the African country of Senegal(塞內(nèi)加爾),some women take health risks trying to do just the opposite.
An average beauty supply shop in Dakar has many kinds of skin-lightening creams and soaps.The World Health Organization says that 25percent of Senegalese women use skin-lightening products on a usual basis.These products can contain chemicals such as mercury(汞),hydroquinone(對苯二酚),etc.These are dangerous ingredients that can cause cancer and possibly other physical damage to the skin.They can actually burn the eyes and skin.
Shop worker Adama Diagne advises her visitors to avoid the stronger products that promise fast results.She uses a cream that is made from carrots and not the strong chemical,hydroquinone.She says that it is a personal choice and that no one pressures her.Some women want to be black every day,but for her,she likes to be a shade of brown.
Women in Senegal say they lighten their skin for the same reason that women all over the world make changes to their appearance.They say they want to look beautiful,to find a husband,or to stand out in a crowd or simply to look great for a special event.
This thinking troubles Senegalese filmmaker Khardiata Pouye Sall.So,she made"This Color That Bothers Me,"a film about the subject of skin lightening.She said,"I used the most shocking images so that women would see the dangers.It is hard to understand why a woman says that dark skin is not beautiful.It is in their heads.They want to please a man,to be loved.Or they want to please society,to succeed."
Ms.Sall says that the government needs to better control the marketing and sale of skin lightening products.But she adds that education is the best way to persuade people against using them.

32.The underlined parts"the opposite"in Paragraph 2means some Senegalese womenC.
A.use sunlight to darken their skin
B.try creams to prevent skin cancer.
C.use products to lighten their skin
D.take health risks to become beautiful
33.According to Adama Diagne,women shouldn't believeD.
A.beauty is just a personal choice
B.a(chǎn) cream from carrots is healthier
C.it is beautiful to be black every day
D.a(chǎn) product can make you beautiful quickly
34.We can infer that women in SenegalB.
A.a(chǎn)ttract attention with shocking images
B.don't consider dark skin to be beautiful
C.find it hard to understand the true beauty
D.put beauty in their first place in their heads.
