Typhoon Rananim, the 14th this year, has moved westward to east China’s Jiangxi Province Friday morning, weakening to a tropical storm. Rananim hit the Shangrao district in the northern part of the province at about 11:00 a.m. Friday, bringing heavy rains and gales to the drought-hit province. According to the provincial meteorological bureau, most parts of the province will have showers or thundershowers, plus moderate breeze at force 4 to 5, on Friday and Saturday. The Poyang Lake will have gale of force 7 to 8. The northern part of Jiangxi, such as Guangfeng county, experienced heavy rains early Friday. Experts noted that the heavy rain would help ease the dry situation in the province. Since early July, the province has been reported dry spells. Jiangxi has had limited drinking water for more than 1 million people, and 20 percent of its crops have been affected by drought. According to the China’s Central Meteorological Station, the tropic storm will sweep the southwestern part of east China’s Anhui Province and the eastern part of central China’s Hubei Province Friday night. Rananim landed at Shitang town of Wenling city of Zhejiang Province at 8:00 p.m. Thursday. As of 5:00 a.m. Friday, Rananim had affected 8.59 million people, claiming at least 63 lives and leaving another 15 people missing, according to the latest statistics from China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The devastation of Typhoon Morakot over Taiwan and eastern China is a reminder that the northwest Pacific is the most dangerous region in the world for tropical storms. The worst of these are typhoons, which are the same as hurricanes in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, or cyclones in the Indian Ocean and Australia. They all have winds of more than 118km/h (73mph) spinning around a central core.

These storms start off as a mass of thunderstorms in the tropics outside the Equator.Given the right conditions, they form a bigger and more organised storm and feed off warm seas at more than 26.5C (80F) to get the fuel that they need to become a fully-fledged(羽毛豐滿的) typhoon, hurricane or cyclone. Each storm is like a heat engine, extracting heat from the warm, humid air over the sea and turning it into phenomenal amounts of energy — equivalent to about 200 times the entire world’s electrical generating capacity. But warm, moist air is not enough — these storms also need slack winds aloft, because strong high-altitude winds can rip off the top of the storm clouds and send the entire storm tumbling(翻跟頭).

The damage from tropical storms often comes from their winds, or the storm surges from the sea as the winds pile up water into a huge battering ram(沖擊夯) that floods coastlines. But the devastation from Typhoon Morakot came from its unbelievable rainfall — about a year’s average rain in some places — that set off landslides and mudslides.

45.According to the first paragraph, the common point among typhoons, hurricanes and cyclones is _______.

47.The devastation from Typhoon Morakot is mainly from ______.

     A.its wind                   B.its rainfall

       C.landslides and mudslides       D.the storm

48.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

Twenty-five years ago if you made a trip to the local library and searched for articles on globing warming, you’d probably come up with a few from the leading magazines in the world. As an Internet search on global warming now shows, the subject has become as rooted in people’s mind as Madonna or microwave cooking.
With the possible exception of another world war, a giant planet, or an incurable disease, global warming may be the largest danger to our planet. For decades human factories and cars have sent billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and the climate has begun to show some signs of warming. If steps are not taken soon to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide sent into the atmosphere, the result could terribly affect human life. We have already seen growing destruction, such as drought and death in Sudan, flooding in Asia, bush fires in Indonesia, and fierce winter storms in central Europe.
The Republic of Maldives is barely above sea level. Its 250, 000 citizens are scattered across 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean. A strong typhoon could spell the end for the entire country, as sea levels could continue rising. The entire population would have to be moved away as the country disappears under the sea.
The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring phenomenon that keeps our planet at a comfortable temperature averaging 60°F. Since the mid-nineteenth century, however, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased nearly 30% because of the increased use of fossil fuels to run cars, heat homes and power factories. Without controlling, the amount of carbon-dioxide by 2100 may increase by 30%-150% and could lift the average global temperature by up to 2.5° F the next 50 years.
【小題1】.
With the first paragraph, the author intends to       .

A.scold people for not paying enough attention to global warming
B.draw people’s attention to global warming
C.how to search for the articles on global warming
D.point out the serious effect of global warming
【小題2】.
Global warming could affect human life in the following ways EXCEPT       .
A.producing more greenhouse gasesB.causing more floods
C.making winter storms fiercerD.starting more bush fires
【小題3】.
The Republic of Maldives       .
A.has moved away their citizens
B.will be more likely to be destroyed by a strong typhoon than by the rising sea level
C.is mostly likely to be destroyed by the rising sea level
D.will have to move away most of their population
【小題4】.
. Why is the Republic of Maldives especially mentioned in the passage?
A.Because smaller countries are easier to be affected by global warming.
B.Because seaside countries are in danger of disappearing.
C.Because it’s necessary to rescue a country before the sea level rises.
D.Because the serious result of global warming could end a whole country.
【小題5】.
. From the last paragraph, we can infer that greenhouse effect       .
A.can only affect the earth in an unfavorable way
B.is something easy to control
C.is caused by human act
D.will be good to us if it remains at a proper level
