71  It is divided into two types: short term memory and long term memory. Short term memory helps the brain to remember the information from a few seconds to a few minutes, for example, searching a phone number in the phone directory. This type of information is not stored for a long time, and slips from the brain.    72
73   There is no exact definition of brain exercises. The key to brain exercises is to stimulate(刺激) the gray cells of our mind. For example, trying out different problem solving exercises can be a good practice for improving the analytical skills of brain.   74  If you regularly exercise it, you will develop a good body, or else you will have an unfit body, and thus, our brain needs exercises regularly. Here are some memory improvement tips for adults:
●Regular exercises help to keep away diseases that are harmful to the memory. Besides, regular exercising improves the feeling of well-being and improves blood circulation to the brain.
●Don't be stressed, as stress holds back the ability of the mind to concentrate. A stress-free mind will collect and store more information that a stressed mind, so avoid being over-stressed. But in modern times people have great pressure from work and life.    75  . Sleep is necessary for keeping the mind and body fit and the side effects of lack of sleep include a lack of concentration.
A.Ask your doctors for advice on memory.
B.Developing good sleeping habits helps a lot.
C.The memory is just like our body in some way.
D.Memory is the remembering of any information taken in by the brain.
E.Not all people have the power to recite so many things at a time.
F.Long term memory, on the other hand, is the memory where we make conscious efforts to keep the information for a long time.
G.Brain exercises are one of the simplest ways of improving memory power.

Speaking in public is most people's least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become. In fact, public speaking is not a "gift" like musical talent. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
Try to make your idea clear and brief. If you can't express what you intend to get across in a sentence or two, and then your speech is not focused well enough. If you don't have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience will make no sense. After all, what you can impress your audience in your speech is one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or twenty.
No matter how long or short your speech is, you've got to organize it well-how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you're going to close. A strong close is critical: the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first. When you know where you' re headed, you can choose any route to get there.
Finally, you'd better limit the time of your speech as properly as you can to hold the audience's curiosity. Take a vaudeville act (雜耍) for example. The standard length of one is usually 12 minutes. Just imagine how you are feeling if you have been watching all the performers singing and dancing their hearts out for more than the standard time

Mobile phones should be banned from cars altogether, according to Dr Hole, senior lecturer in psychology, Dr Hole has emphasized the worrying combination of mobile phones and cars in his new book, The Psychology of Driving.
Mobile phones, fatigue(疲勞) , eyesight, drugs and age are among the issues considered by Dr Hole as he examines the factors that influence on driving. The book explores the role of each of these elements in increasing the chances of an accident and was inspired by the author's conversations with road safety experts across the country.
He says: “The government should have banned mobile phones in cars altogether. It has sent out the wrong message by forbidding hand-held phones because this gives the impression that hands-free phones are safe. The problem with mobile phones is not vehicular(車輛的) control and only having one hand on the wheel, but rather it is taking away attention from what is happening outside the car.”
Myths(荒誕的說法) about older people making worse drivers and claims(說法) about an improved reaction time among younger people are explored in the book. Questions about how drivers decide what to attend to while driving, the role of a driver's expectations in determining what they see and how they respond to the road are among the areas covered in the book. Satellite navigation systems and new design aimed at transforming cars into a mobile office, are among the modern developments which he says now compete for driver's attention behind the wheel.
Dr Hole says: “We need to be very careful about how we go about handling modern technology in cars, because we are opening a Pandora's Box. When anyone is driving there is a lot of information outside the car and if there is too much going on inside, then there is a danger of overloading the driver.”

A. the inconvenience of having only one hand on the wheel caused by mobile phones
B. the correct message of getting rid of hand-held phones sent out by the government
C. the increase of chances of accidents
D. the advice given by some road safety experts
3. Which of the following is not included in his book?
A. Hand-free phones are safer than hand-held phones.
B. What drivers have to attend to while driving.
C. Whether older age and slower reaction is related.
D. Bad eyesight is one of the factors of causing an accident.
3. Which of the following is true?
A. Older people are better at preventing accidents.
B. Younger drivers’ reaction time is relatively shorter.
C. It is a myth that some old people can still drive.
D. A driver’s expectations are not covered in the book.
4. What can we know from the underlined sentence?
A. What is going on outside is of equal importance to what inside.
B. Modern developments call for drivers’ attention behind the wheel.
C. Satellite navigation systems require more cars as mobile offices.
D. Modern technology is responsible for the distraction (分心) of one’s attention while driving.

There’s a man in the habit of hitting me on the head with an umbrella. At first I couldn’t stand it; now I’m used to it.
I don’t know his name. I know he’s ordinary in appearance, wears a gray suit and has a common face. One hot morning, when 1 was sitting on a tree-shaded bench in Palermo Park, reading the paper, suddenly I felt something touch my head. It was the very same man who now, as I’m writing, keeps striking me with an umbrella.
So I turned around filled with anger. He just kept on hitting me. I asked him if he was crazy. He didn’t even seem to hear me. Then I threatened (威脅) to call a policeman. Calmly cool as a cucumber, he went on hitting me. After a few moments of hesitation (猶豫), and seeing that he was not about to change his attitude, I stood up and hit him on the nose. The man fell down. But he immediately got back on his feet, obviously with great effort, and without a word again began hitting me on the head with the umbrella. His nose was bleeding and, at that moment. I felt sorry for him I regretted having hit him so hard. After all, the man wasn’t exactly hitting me;he was only tapping me lightly with his umbrella, not causing any pain at all. Of course, those taps were extremely upsetting. As we all know, when a fly lands on your forehead, you don’t feel any pain;what you feel is annoyance (煩惱).  Well then, that umbrella was one huge fly that kept landing on my head time after time.
Believing that I was dealing with a madman, I tried to escape. But the man followed me, wordlessly continuing to hit me. So I began to run (I should point out that not many people run as fast as I do). He ran after me, trying to hit me. The man was out of breath so that I thought, if I continued to force him to run at that speed, he would drop dead right then and there.
64. When the man began to strike the author with an umbrella, the author_________
  A. became angry                  B. called the police
    C. turned around and escaped        D. turned around and fought back
65. The author would most probably agree that the man was________.
    A. deaf          B. blind         C. dead         D. mad
66. The author felt sorry for the man because _______.
   A. there was a fly on the man’s head     B. he hit the man so hard that his nose bled
 C. the man couldn’t catch up with him       D. the man formed a bad habit of beating others
67. It can be learned from the passage that the man__________.
 A. shouted loudly while hitting the author  B. wanted to tell the author something
 C. ran after the author breathlessly        D. acted as if he were a fly

Welcome every morning with a smile. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo(回響) through your entire day. Today will never happen again. Don’t waste it with a false start or no start at all. You were not born to fail.
Starting the day right can give good momentum (動(dòng)力) for the rest of the day. Having a power morning is a key factor for a fruitful day. Here are some tips on getting the most out of the morning.
Wake up early. In theory, there’s no difference in waking up early or late as long as you get the proper amount of sleep. However, there is a psychological advantage when you wake up earlier than the average person and then you’ll have more time to do preparation before engaging in the real world.
Exercise. Good health is always a benefit with exercise, but studies have also shown that morning exercise helps you to sleep better at nights.
Eat breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. According to the Mayo Clinic, we should choose three from the following four: fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein. Did you know that you can actually gain weight when you skip breakfast?
Take a shower. When you shower, do you do it in the morning or at night? I used to shower in the evenings, but I found that morning showers helped me to be more smart.
Prioritize (優(yōu)先) your To-Do list. Leo coined the acronym(首字母縮略詞) MIT to mean “most important tasks.” Our to-do list might be never ending, but put on top of the list a couple of urgent tasks that will define the day to be a successful one.
Check your emails. Only once. Getting a lot of emails can be very distractive(分散精力的). You actually are more productive when you check them only a few times at fixed time of the day. I only do them 2-3 times a day—once in the morning, once at lunch, and one more as it gets toward the end of the day.
45. The purpose for the author to write this passage is to_______________.
A. tell you to get up early every day
B. offer you the best way to start the day
C. give you advice about how to arrange a day
D. advise you to prioritize your to-do list every morning

A. lose weight.              B. be productive.
C. put on weight.            D. be more smart.
47. The underlined word “coined” in Paragraph 6 mean__________.
A. invented         B. designed          C. founded        D. defined
48. The author advises you to check your emails only once because__________.

We are often asked to make a speech in life. Most of us are afraid of it and don’t do a good job. Here are some simple steps to make your speech a successful one. Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook from scratch? Have you been doing internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can't you be bothered to do?
A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy they'd catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.
Just over 2000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britain's largest health charity. The results were astonishing.
About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.
More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too tired to play with them.
This led the report to conclude that it's no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese (very fat) before they start school.
Dr Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said: "People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets too.
"If we don't start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary of tasks."
And Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most inactive city in the UK, with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.
The results cause serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year.
