Stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety or fear which may occur in an individual by the require?ment to perform in front of an audience. It is most com?monly seen in school situations, like stand-up projects and class speeches. It has numerous forms : heart beat?ing fast, trembling hands and legs, sweaty hands, dry mouth, etc.

In fact, most of the fear occurs before you step on stage. Once you're up there , it usually goes away. Thus, it is a phenomenon that you must learn to con?trol. Try to think of stage fright in a positive way. It heightens your energy, adds colour to your cheeks. With these good effects you will actually look healthier and more physically attractive.

Many of the top performers in the world get stage fright so you are in good company. Stage fright may come and go or decrease, but it usually does not disap?pear permanently. You must concentrate on getting the feeling out and present what you have prepared calmly.

Remember nobody ever died from stage fright. But, according to surveys, many people would rather die than give a speech. If that applies to you, and you are an unlucky guy who is with stage fright the whole time, try out some of the strategies(策略)as follows to help get yourself under control. Realize that you may never overcome stage fright, but you can learn to con?trol it, and use it to your advantage.

Strategies are as follows when the programme be?gins:

1)    If legs are trembling, lean on the table or shift legs or move.

2)    Don't hold notes. The audience can see them shake. Use three-by-five cards instead.

3)    Use eye contact. Look at the friendliest faces in the audience.

Remember nervousness doesn't show one tenth as much as it feels. Before each presentation, make a short list of the items that you think will make you feel better. Don't be afraid to experiment with different combi?nations. You never know which ones will work best un?til you try. Use these steps to control stage fright so it doesn't control you. Once you are used to stage fright, you will find you on the road to a great speech-maker.

With its special elegant body and spotted coat, the cheetah(獵豹)is the most unique member of the cat family. As the world's fastest land mammal, the chee?tah can reach speeds of 112km/h. A cheetah can go from 0 to 96 kilometres per hour in only three long steps. However, with a lean body and small teeth, the cheetah cannot fight larger animals. This gives the chee?tah a double risk as it is placed in direct conflict with hu?mans. Farmers that live nearby shoot, trap and poison cheetahs, because they think that cheetahs will kill their livestock (牲畜).

The cheetah is now endangered. It was once found across all of Africa, extending eastwards into Asia. However, hunting, habitat destruction and loss of prey (獵物)have meant that cheetahs are now only found in a few countries in Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature recently reported that only about 7 , 500 adult cheetahs remain in the wild. This makes the small population of cheetahs even more precious and worthy of protection.

The Wildlife Conservation Fund has teamed up with Central Kalahari Research Group to study and pro?tect the remaining cheetahs.

In order to find out more about these animals, two adult cheetahs were fitted with GPS satellite collars. These collars provide information about how cheetahs move through their environment. And they provide an excellent way to study cheetahs which have been re?leased back into the wild. Understanding cheetahs' be?haviour is an important step for their protection. Also, it is necessary to cooperate with local farmers and other land users to reduce the killing of cheetahs.

1.    What makes it difficult for the cheetah to fight larger animals?

A.    Its big head and small mouth.

B.    Its strong legs and fat feet.

C.    Its thin body and tiny teeth.

D.    Its short toes and long tail.

2.    Which is NOT the reason why cheetahs are endan?gered?

A.     Loss of food.

B.    An elegant body.

C.    Habitat destruction.

D.    Hunting and killing.

3.    What is the function of the collars in the last para?graph?

A.    To catch more cheetahs and kill them.

B.    To protect the habitat where cheetahs live.

C.    To protect cheetahs from being caught by other big animals.

D.    To get information about cheetahs and under?stand their behaviour.

4.    What can we learn from this passage?

A.    Cheetahs are disappearing slowly from the world.

B.    The protection of cheetahs is urgently needed.

C.    Cheetahs always catch farmers' livestock for food.

D.    Cheetahs are able to adapt to the environment well.

The number of people attending high school and college reunions(重聚)has reduced. There are a lot of people who say Facebook is good enough and that they don't want to get together. Mindy Crouchley is one of them. "I can keep in touch with anyone I'm interested in through this medium(媒介).There's nothing more a reunion could give me."

I am a huge fan of Facebook. But having just at?tended my 40th high school reunion, I can say to Mindy and others that Facebook can't substitute the experi?ences you get at a reunion face to face and across a crowded room. They include the sound of a once-famil?iar voice calling out to you and the pleasure that comes with recognizing an old teammate after only a moment's hesitation.

Facebook is to a reunion what Mindy's yearbook is to a novel : the level of detail you get on Facebook can't be equal to what you find face to face. For example, a classmate told me about a trip he had taken to see his dying teacher; it taught him the importance of telling people what they mean to you when they are still alive.

Of course nearly half of the 70 students in our class didn't make it. At the closing dinner, a classmate said, "Please raise your glass to the three members of the class of 1971 who have died. " Of course, five and ten years from now, at our next reunions, the list of those to whom we raise a glass will be longer. We may hear about their death through Facebook. But face to face, in a community of classmates, something deeper happens : you are forced to admit life is short, which makes you feel grateful for your blessings and make the most of what remains.

4.What's the writer's purpose in giving the example in Paragraph 3?

     A. To advise us to pay a visit to those who are dy?ing.

B. To prove that old people don't like communica?ting on Facebook.

C. To show that a face-to-face talk is better than a talk on Facebook.

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the ac?cident I had to see a doctor and go to court.

After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $ 200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I'd have to have a good lawyer.
