A weekend full of parties begins today. Almost everyone is expecting the excitement of going out and drinking with friends. Few are thinking of the dangers, that is,drunk driving. This is becoming a major problem on the campus.
"I'm OK,and I can drive." is often heard during parties. Many times people will not realize how much alcohol they have consumed and they don, t realize how it may affect them. In fact, many of us have been in situations where we have got into a car driven by a person that has had several drinks. And several drinks may be enough to lead to impaired driving and can result in serious consequences.
The words "Don't drink and drive! ”have been spoken enough. However,I still don't think people would listen. In order to be over the legal limit of a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 ,a man must have four drinks in one hour on an empty stomach. One might brush this off, saying four drinks in one hour is excessive, but driving under the legal limit may put oneself and others in danger.
One must seriously consider what one is doing while driving. When I first got my driving
license, my father told me, "A car is a weapon if used irresponsibly/' Most people know someone who has been killed or seriously injured due to a drunk driver. Driving is dangerous when one is not in full control.
Along with endangering the safety of oneself and others,if one is found driving drunk, major problems may follow. There is the possibility of higher insurance rates, loss of license, jail sentence or community service.
The consequences should prevent all people from driving drunk, but sadly this is not the case. People still choose to drive without full mental capacity. Part of this stems form a belief that we are above the rules set out for other people. People think that it will not happen to them. But the truth is that drinking and driving really does affect people everywhere. And it needs to be taken seriously.
1 suggest that anyone driving over the weekend should choose not to drink at all, even though they may be under the legal limit of drinks. This weekend should be fun. With driving safety in mind, you should be confident that you will return to your campus without any problems.

What happens inside the skull of a soccer player who repeatedly heads a soccer ball? That question motivate a challenging new study of the brains of experienced players and has caused discussion and debate among soccer players, and also some anxiety among those of us with soccer-playing children.
For the study, researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York selected 34 adults, men and women. All of the volunteers had played soccer since childhood and now competed year-round in adult soccer leagues. Each filled out a detailed questionnaire developed especially for this study to determine how many times they had headed a soccer ball in the previous year,as well as whether they had experienced any known concussions(腦震蕩) in the past.
had their brains scanned, using a complicated new MRI technique which can find structural changes in the brain that can't be seen during most scans.
According to the data they presented at a Radiological Society of North America meeting last month, the researchers found that the players who had headed the ball more than about 1 ,100 times
in the previous 12 months showed significant loss of white matter in parts of their brains involved with memory, attention and the processing of visual information, compared with players who had headed the ball fewer times.
This pattern of white matter loss is "similar to those seen in traumatic(夕卜傷的) brain injury", like that after a serious concussion, the researchers reported, even though only one of these players was reported to have ever experienced a concussion.
The players who had headed the ball about 1 ,100 times or more in the past year were also generally worse at recalling lists of words read to them, forgetting or fumbling the words far more often than players who had headed the ball less.

It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can't fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctor might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.
Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.
Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys, brains. When the brain,s temperature was 10X,, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.
