Last weekend we went mountainclimbing. Even the heavy rain can not stop us. We set off early and went along an extreme narrow road, all in high spirit. On either side of the road was green fields. We could hear the sound of the rain mixing with our laughter. At noon we reached to the top of the mountain, there we were amazed by the beauty of the scenes. After short rest,we started going down. It rained more harder. We were wet all over, and we still felt happy.

A team of researchers in the UK has shown that chil?dren who are taken to the library more often and own more books at two years old achieve higher scores in school tests when they begin pri?mary school. The research also showed that although social background has a noticeable effect on a child's readiness for school, attending preschool and hav?ing their parents teach them a wide range of activities have a positive effect―while extended exposure to television lowers their scores.
"One message coming through loud and clear is that how a child learns in his very early years is critical (至關(guān)重要的) for a smooth transition into the educational sys?tem," said Professor James Law. "This is a very positive message * as it gets us away from the belief that a child's educational future is predetermined by standard measures of socioeconomic disadvantage, such as income, housing,or the mother's education."
Data from the study shows that children from a posi?tive communication environment have a better expressive vocabulary by their second birthday. These children go on to achieve higher scores in language, reading and maths tests when they enter school. In the early years, the com?munication environment is a better predictor of children's success with language than their general social back?ground.
Most children develop speech and language effortless?ly,but some are slow to acquire these skills and go on to struggle with literacy (讀寫育g力) and academic skills throughout their schooling. This project set out to uncov?er what factors contribute to these problems.
Professor Sue Roulstone said, "These findings are an encouragement to all parents to provide a positive commu?nication environment for their children from the very start of their lives. The project did identify particular aspects of the communication environment such as having children's books around and not having the television on too much. But the main message is that,as parents,we can have an impact on how our children learn to talk by providing a range of communication experiences. And the better our children are at talking by the age of two years old,the better they will do when they start school."

B. the very early years had a big effect on children's school performance
C. communication with children after they were over two years old was more effective
D. children's educational future was predetermined by their parents' social position .
17.What is implied in the passage?
A. The research could help children who suffer from learning difficulties.
B. Parents should take their children to school as ear?ly as possible.
C. Teachers should teach children how to communi?cate with their parents.
D. Children who have good language abilities will not have difficulties in class.

閱讀理解
A The history of cloning animals is as fol?lows. Cloning of nonmammals was first ac?complished in 1952. However, cloning of mam?mals proved much more difficult, with the first successful clone being the sheep,Dolly,in 1996. Dolly died a young death, probably due to the use of aged chromosomes (染色體) in her nuclear transfer (核移植) .Other mammal spe?cies followed rapidly, with mice and cows being cloned in 1998,and pigs in 2000. The first cat was cloned in 2001. Rabbits were cloned in 2002 and the first male mammal (a mule) was cloned in 2003. In 2004,a bull was cloned from a previously cloned bull. The first cloned human embryos were not produced until 2001,when a private company Ad?vanced Cell Technology produced 6-cell embryos. Howev?er,the first cloned human blastocyst (胚泡) was not pro?duced until 2004 by a group in Korea.
Cloning is classified as research and reproductive (繁殖的) cloning. When the embryo is not allowed to live,it is considered research cloning. Otherwise,it is classified as reproductive cloning. About ten states have banned repro?ductive cloning with five banning research cloning. Puerto Rico proposed a worldwide ban of reproductive and re?search cloning in 2003 through the UN. However, objec?tions by Great Britain and other countries resulted in the proposal being formally presented until 2004.
From a Christian theistic (有神論的) world view, cloning or deliberately making changes in the human blue?print is playing God. This is something that would not be forgiven. Alternatively, from the opposite humanist world view, human engineering is no more than helping evolu?tion. Our position on this issue, like so many other cultural issues,is dependent upon our belief on a more fundamental world view truth. This can be seen in the conflicting views regarding government funding and support or alternatively restrictions and moratoriums (暫停,中止) .

B. the embryo is dead
C. the cloned animal is allowed to live
