Reading Strategies Have you ever read what should be a useful document, yet failed to gain any helpful information from it? Or,do you have to reread something several times to get a full understanding of the content?

The following approaches will help you get the maximum benefit from your reading, with the minimum effort.

1. Think about What You Want to Know 1          Are you reading with a purpose,or just for pleasure? What do you want to know after you've read it?

Once you know your purpose, you can examine the resource to see whether it's going to help you.

2. Know How Deeply to Study the Material Where you only need the shallowest knowledge of a subject, you can skim the material. Here you read only chapter headings, introductions, and summaries.

If you need a moderate level of information on a subject, then you can scan the text. You can then speed read the contents of the chapters, picking out and understanding key words and concepts. 2

3. Read Actively When you're reading a document or book in detail,it helps if you practice "active reading" by highlighting and underlining key information, and taking notes as you progress. 3

4. Know How to Study Different Types of Material Different types of documents hold information in different places and in different ways, and they have different depth and breadth of coverage.

The most effective way of getting information from magazines is to scan the tables of contents or indexes and turn directly to interesting articles. Newspapers tend to be arranged in sections. 4

5. Make Your Own Table of Contents 5          This means that you may not notice when important information has been left out,or that an irrelevant detail has been included.

An effective way to combat this is to make up your own table of contents before you start reading. Ask yourself what sections or topics you are expecting to see in this document, and what questions you want to have answered by the end of the text.

   A. This is when you read the chapter introductions and summaries in detail.

   B. Before you start reading anything, ask yourself why you're reading it.

   C. Most of us read regularly as part of our jobs, and to develop our skills and knowledge.

   D. This enphasizes information in your mind, and helps you to review inportant points later.

   E. Only when you need full knowledge of a subject is it worth studying the text in detail.

   F. When you're reading a document or book,it's easy to accept the writer's structure of thought.

   G. If you read a paper often, you can quickly learn which sections are useful, and which ones you can skip altogether.

How often have you used brainstorming to solve a problem? Chances are, you've used it at least once, even if you did not realize it. For decades, people have used brainstorming to generate (生成) ideas, and to come up with creative solutions to problems. However, you need to use brainstorming correctly for it to be fully effective. 1       Step 1 :Prepare the Group First, set up a comfortable meeting environment for the session. Make sure that the room is well lit and that you have the tools, resources, and refreshments that you need.

How much information or preparation does your team need in order to brainstorm solutions? Remember that prep is important, but too much can limit―or even destroy―the freewheeling nature of a brainstorming session.

2      A room full of likeminded people won't generate as many creative ideas as a diverse group,so try to include people from a wide range of disciplines and include people with a variety of different thinking styles.

Step 2 :Present the Problem Clearly define the problem that you want to solve, and lay out any criteria that you must meet. Make it clear that the meeting's objective is to generate as many ideas as possible.

Give people plenty of quiet time at the start of the session to write down as many of their own ideas as they can. 3       Step 3 :Guide the Discussion Once everyone has shared their ideas, start a group discussion to develop other people's ideas, and use them to create new ideas. 4       Encourage everyone to contribute and to develop ideas, including the quietest people, and discourage anyone from criticizing ideas.

Share ideas if you have them, but spend your time and energy supporting your team and guiding the discussion.

5       People are most creative when they are enjoying themselves in a relaxing environment.

   A. Consider who will attend the meeting.

   B. After the brainstorming session, you'll have a lot of ideas.

   C. Above all, remember to let everyone have fun while brainstorming.

   D. To run a group brainstorming session (會(huì)議,會(huì)期) effectively, follow these steps.

   E. Building on others' ideas is one of the most valuable aspects of group brainstorming.

   F. Then, ask them to share their ideas, while giving everyone a fair opportunity to contribute.

   G. Make sure that you get a good number of different ideas, and explore individual ideas in detail.
