When Armida Armato’s daughter, Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, she wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.
Alexia was 16 at the time, a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a one-room school. Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care.
Now that Alexia was home, Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence. “This is the best thing I ever did,” Alexia said. “The experience was so eye-opening and life-changing. You’re with people who are not as lucky as you are. They live in very poor conditions but they’re so happy and outgoing. You say, ‘My God. I’m taking everything for granted back home.’”
She said they built a one-room school from scratch with no mechanical cement mixers. They used their hands, shovels and basic tools. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital, Quito. Despite the initial strangeness and knowing only basic Spanish, she said they grew very close and felt like a family.
Every year, groups of students at Montreal High School like Alexia pack their bags and fly off with classmates and teachers to developing countries where they volunteer for a variety of projects.
“Armato’s worries are very common among parents,” says Bill Nevin, a teacher at St. George’s High School. He organizes a humanitarian rip to India to the Sheela Bal Bhavan orphanage and says the three biggest fears families have are health, security and contact.
1.When hearing the news that her daughter would go on a school trip to Ecuador, Armato was _______.
A.proud and happy
B.supportive but concerned
C.fearful and nervous
D.excited but puzzled
2.The underlined phrase “from scratch” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.
A.having great help
B.using high technology
C.ending up in failure
D.starting from the beginning
3.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Volunteering helps students grow and develop.
B.School trips make parents worried about their children.
C.Ecuador is the most attractive travel destination in the world.
D.Brave Alexia dreams to work in Ecuador one day.

Have you ever noticed that the more you have the more you want? Let’s face it.Thinking our life is good enough doesn’t come naturally to many people. When we have high expectations of everything in life we will run into disappointment.Only when we are aware that needs are different from desires can we live with satisfaction. Here are a few ideas to help you be happier with what you have and who you are.
Focus on what you are thankful for. Most people want things to be better than they are, or when things are going well, we forget to appreciate what we have.Learn to reflect on how much better things are than they could be.Focus on what you are thankful for.Write down 5 things you are grateful for right now.
When we hold onto regrets from decisions we have made, it can really poison our well-being.Many people regret something they can no longer change, which ends up holding them back from moving forward in a more positive manner. What happened in the past is done and gone, so work to stay present and be mindful of the current moment to find more joy and fulfillment.
When we use other people as the measuring stick for our personal success and quality of life we are likely to be less satisfied.Social comparisons can provide useful information when we try to learn from others, but they also hold our perspective in a discontented position.Compare yourself less with others so you can be satisfied more.
When you are focused on your big ambitions and future goals you might elide the daily pleasures that surround you.Learn to slow down and absorb the wonder and beauty around you.Stay present and focus on the task you’re undertaking at the moment.Don’t let the life pass you by because you’re always on the go and distracted by ambition.
Practice looking at life through the lens of contentment and it will become more natural.
1.How can we live with contentment?
A.To change our lifestyle.
B.To have a motivation in life.
C.To give less attention to what we are grateful for.
D.To realize the difference between needs and desires.
2.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Make wise decisions
B.Know the present situation
C.Let go of regrets
D.Remember the past
3.The underlined word “elide”(in Paragraph 5) probably means “______”.
A.enjoy B.change C.create D.neglect
4.What should you do to put yourself in a good mood?
A.Make time for simple pleasures.
B.Learn from successful people.
C.Focus on your future goals.
D.Create chance to learn more.

Mary is digging in the ground for a photo, when along comes John.Seeing that there is no one in sight, John starts to scream.John’s angry mother rushes over and drives Mary away.Once his mum has gone, John helps himself to Mary’s potato.
We’ve all experienced similar annoying tricks when we were young—the brother who stole your ball and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit him.But Mary and John are not humans. They’re African baboons(狒狒).1.
John’s scream and his mother’s attack on Mary could have been a matter of chance, but John was later seen playing the same tricks on others.2.
Studying behavior like this is complicated but scientists discovered apes(猿) clearly showed that they intended to cheat and knew when they themselves had been cheated._3. An ape was annoying him, so he tricked her into going away by pretending he had seen something interesting. When she found nothing, she “walked back, hit me over the head with her hand and ignored me for the rest of the day.”
Another way to decide whether an animal’s behavior is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animal.A zoo worker describes how an ape dealt with an enemy.“He slowly stole up behind the other ape, walking on tiptoe. When he got close to his enemy, he pushed him violently in the back, then ran indoors.” Wild apes do not normally walk on tiptoe._4.But looking at the many cases of deliberate trickery in apes, it is impossible to explain them all as simple copying.
It seems that trickery does play an important part in ape societies.5._ Studying the intelligence of our closest relative could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence.
A.In most cases the animal probably doesn’t know it is cheating.
B.An amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in Tanzania.
C.And playing tricks is as much a part of monkey behavior as it is of human behavior.
D.So the psychologists asked his colleagues if they had noticed this kind of trickery.
E.The ability of animals to cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their use of tools
F.This use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonly used by baboons.
G.Of course it’s possible that it could have learnt from humans that such behavior works, without understanding why.

The news which the English Entrance Examination will be reformed has caused a big “earthquake” in our country. Many people, included students, are for it.But there are also some people are against it.Then, is it better to do so or not? Personally, I think the reform has between advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, it can reduce students’ learn burden and enable English to return back to its true function. On the other hand, it will cause students to spend less time on studying English and to attached less importance to English. If so, students will not have a good knowledge of English. What’s more, if students don’t have so a good ability, they will not be able to broaden our horizon and meet the future challenges.

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to(料理), and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card(住宿登記卡) to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate(價(jià)錢(qián)). From then on, they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly(相應(yīng)地).
With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.
In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?
1. While taking a taxi in Finland, _____.
A. a passenger can go anywhere without having to pay the driver
B. a passenger pays two US dollars for a taxi ride
C. a passenger can never be refused by the taxi driver wherever he wants to go
D. a passenger needs to provide good faith demonstration (證明) before leaving without paying
2. We know from the passage that big hotels in Finland ________.
A. are mostly poorly managed
B. provide meals for any diners
C. provide free wine and charge for food
D. provide meal for only those who live in the hotels
3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The workers in Finland are paid by the hour.
B. The workers are always honest with their working hours.
C. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay.
D. The bosses in Finland are too busy to check the working hours of their employees.
4.The word “those” in the last but one paragraph probably refers to _____.
A. people who are dishonest
B. people who often have meals in big hotels
C. people who often take taxis
D. people who are worthy of trust

Every morning Grandpa got up early sitting at the table, reading his book. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to copy him in every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read the book just like you, but I don’t understand it, and I forget what I understand as soon as I close the book.
