Revenge is one of those things that everyone enjoys. People don’t like to talk about it, though. Just the same, there is nothing more satisfying or more rewarding than revenge. The purpose is not to harm your victims but to let them know that you are upset about something that they are doing to you. Careful planning can provide you with relief from annoying coworkers, gossiping friends or talkative family members.
Coworkers who make comments about the fact that you are always fifteen minutes late for work can be taken care of very simply. All you have to do is get up extra one day. Before the sun comes up, drive to each coworker’s house. Reach under the cover of your coworker’s car and disconnect the center wire that leads to the distributor(配電盤(pán))cap, the car will be unharmed, but it will not start, and your friends at work will all be late for work on the same day. If you’re lucky, your boss might notice that you are the only one there and will give you a raise.
Gossiping friends at school are also perfect targets for a simple act of revenge. A way to trap either male or female friends is to leave false messages on their lockers(柜子). If the friend that you want to get is male, leave a message that a certain girl would like him to stop by her house later that day. With any luck, her boyfriend will be there. The girl won’t know what’s going on, and the victim will be so embarrassed that he probably won’t leave his home for a month.
When Mom and Dad and your sisters and brothers really begin to annoy you, harmless revenge may be just the way it makes them quiet down for a while. The dinner table is a likely place. Just before the meal begins, throw a handful of raisins (葡萄干) into the food. Wait about five minutes and, after everyone has begun to eat, cover your mouth with your hand and begin to make strange noises. When they ask you what the matter is, point to a raisin and yell. “Bugs!” They’ll throw their food in the dustbin, jump into the car, and head for McDonald’s. That night you’ll have your first quiet, peaceful meal in a long time.
A well-planned revenge does not have it hurt anyone. The object is simply to let other people know that they are beginning to bother you.
1. According to the passage, a harmless revenge is ________.
A. to amuse the victim
B. to hurt nobody emotionally

A. pleasing your boss
B. destroying your colleagues’ cars

A. they wanted to eat out
B. they didn’t like the food with raisins
C. they wanted to have a peaceful meal

The day for the great balloon competition finally arrived. Every insect in the garden had been hard, and now they were preparing to begin their routines. The balloon competitions were always something really special.
Each time, the flying insects were favourite to win, because they could seize the balloon strings and fly off in all directions, creating all sorts of in the air. , on this occasion there were some rather unusual insects taking part: a group of ants. Of course, expected that they could do anything special. They were so light that no ant had ever to take part, but it was quite impressive to see all the ants all organized and prepared.
So the competition began, and the insects took their turns, performing beautiful movements with the balloons. As always the butterflies left everyone with their twist and turns, and their wonderful colours. When it was time for the ants to perform, it seemed like the competition had already been decided.
For the time in living memory, the ants shared just one balloon between them, and one by one they climbed up the balloon string, a thin black thread of ants. When all the string was covered, the last ant climbed his teammates to reach the balloon. he got there, he climbed onto the top of the balloon.
This strange attracted everyone's curiosity, and they were just about to witness the most important : the ant opened his jaws as wide as he could. . . and then he made a violent movement at the balloon with all his strength!
The result was powerful! The balloon began blowing out its air, flying about, here and there, doing a thousand turns and spins, while the ants made all kinds of beautiful shapes out of the string.
Of course, that acrobatic(雜技般的) flight with quite a hard landing, but it didn't . The creativity and teamwork of the ant performance was so that the crowd didn't even have to vote for there to be a winner.
From then on, in that garden, everyone understood how much could be achieved by working . In the years to come, the balloon competitions were full of displays carried out by teams, and they put on some wonderful routines; something those individual insects could never have achieved on their own.

Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us. I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play.
When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I’d make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.
Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didn’t expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投籃) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn’t. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life’s challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters.
In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.
1.Different from other coaches, Coach Brian ________.
A. concentrated on skill training
B. expected the team to do well in their studies
C. trained the team to the edge of death
D. asked the team to do more reading than training
2.The underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means ________.
A. paid no attention B. showed no interest
C. made less effort D. had less passion
3. In the author’s eye, Coach Brian is ________.
A. professional and serious
B. hardworking and honest
C. skilled and cruel
D. strict and helpful

Imagine a world in which there were suddenly no emotion — a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate. Try to imagine the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and support. Human relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds among members of groups. Society's economic underpinnings (支柱) would be destroyed: since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive (動(dòng)力) to work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind, for as we will see, incentives mean a capacity to enjoy them.
In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instruments of our survival and adaptation. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotions. True, we consider the length, shape, size or texture, but an object's physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us — hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyful. We also use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, communities, and overall society. Out of our emotional experience with objects and events comes a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are "good" and others are "bad", and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life — from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society uses our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty, morality, pride, shame, guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itself. It gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war, and uses the legal penal (刑法的) system to make people afraid to engage in antisocial acts.
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?
A. people would not be able to tell the physical aspects of objects.
B. People would not know what was beneficial and what was harmful to them.
C. $ 10 million is equal to $ 10 in a world without emotions.
D. There would be full of lies, arguments and violence.
2. In can be inferred from the passage that the economic foundation of society is dependent on ________.
A. the ability to make money
B. the capacity to work
C. the motivation to work
D. our emotional experiences
3. Why are the emotional aspects of an object more important than its physical aspects?
A. They help society use its members for more profit.
B. They encourage us to perform important tasks in the war.
C. They help to perfect the legal and penal system to make people afraid.
D. They help us adapt our behaviors to the world surrounding us.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A. People could only live in a world with emotions.
B. People would always do bad things in the emotionless world.
C. Emotions are very important in the world.
D. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways.
