Oseola McCarty spent more than 75 years washing and ironing other people’s clothes. As a laundrywoman, she was paid only a few dollars each time.Certainly nobody would consider her rich, so they were all amazed when Miss McCarty decided to donate $ 150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi.

The money was in fact her life savings. She could save such a large amount of money because she lived a very simple life. She never learned to drive, and when she wanted to go somewhere, she just walked. She never flew to anywhere till the donation, and in 50 years she had been out of the South only once. The house in which she lived was also a rather modest one her last uncle left her.Only after she became known in America did she begin to travel all over the country.Since then, she had been the subject of many interviews and articles and was even invited to the White House.

Her donation was for students who clearly needed financial help. She herself left school in the sixth grade and had never married or had children. She said to the reporters that the idea of helping somebody’s child go to college gave her much pleasure.

PART THREE READING PREHENSION (共15小題;每小題 2分,滿分30分)

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.

A

With school out and hot weather in, it’s not unusual for youngsters to gather around the refrigerator or the television rather than take part in active play. Such habits may be relaxing but can wreck a healthy lifestyle, say specialists at Texas Children’s Hospital.

“For some kids, the state of feeling bored triggers(引發(fā))eating,” says Jennifer Thomas, a doctor at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. “A child can pick up 5 to 10 pounds over the course of a summer, so it’s important to recognize the difference between boredom(無(wú)聊)and hunger.”

Because children may be adjusting(適應(yīng))to lack of routine, adding some structure to their daily schedules can help. “For example, instead of letting kids eat while they watch television, permit eating only in the kitchen with the television turned off,” says Thomas. “This way can help determine if they are really hungry or just bored.”

If hunger causes a snack attack, nutritious snacks should be available(可得到的)and easy to reach, says Thomas. She suggests two or more servings of fruit and three or more servings of vegetables as a reasonable(合情理的)daily goal. Thomas says, “Fresh or frozen fruit is better than fruit juice. Fresh or frozen vegetables are better because canned vegetables usually contain salt.”

In general, kids should avoid snacks with high sugar content, says Thomas. “More importantly, if a sugary snack takes the place of healthier food, the child is not getting the nutrition he or she needs. High-fat food tends to make a child feel worried, while eating foods that are naturally lower in fat will make it easier for kids to feel more energetic and stay on the go.”

1.What can help to stop children from eating because of boredom?

A. Giving them a daily schedule.

B. Giving them a lot of snacks.

C. Preventing them from watching TV.

D. Making them eat a lot of fruits.

2.What kind of snacks should we give children?

A. Fruit juice.

B. Frozen fruit.

C. Canned vegetables.

D. Snacks rich in sugar.

3.Foods that are naturally lower in fat are necessary for children because _______.

A. they help children lose weight

B. they help children get necessary nutrition

C. they stop children from getting bored

D. they make children active and energetic

4.We can infer from the text that _______.

A. it’s hard to tell the difference between boredom and hunger

B. children may get bored for lack of routine in summer

C. we should limit children’s eating while they’re watching TV

D. nutritious snacks should be available at any time

They are the little sweeties who look pretty cute in a photo,or when sleeping——but a lot less appealing at 30,000 ft,crying loudly in the seat fight next to you.

According to a new survey, almost seven in ten Britons dislike flying with babies so much that they would like to see child-free areas introduced on planes. As for long-distance flights where people want to sleep, almost one in four British travelers believes that no-kid-zones should be fixed as required sections.

The survey was conducted by bookings website LateDeals.co.uk,with 1,108 UK consumers questioned as to what they hate most about air travel.

And our dislike of noisy children and babies on planes runs deep.it seems.

More than a third of us—35 per cent—would pay extra to travel on a childless service.

Long-distance passengers would be prepared to pay an additional £63 to the cost of a return ticket if it meant adults only on board. And on short-distance flights,an extra £28 on the price of a return fare would be considered good value if it guaranteed an absence of angry babies in the middle of the economy-class aisle(走道).

However, screaming babies are not the only source of annoyance for British travellers. In fact, according to the research on the most annoying types of airline passengers,a crying baby ranks as only the fourth.Over half of those surveyed—58 percent—selected ‘drunk travellers’ as their pet peeves.People with‘bad personal hygiene(衛(wèi)生)’and travellers who kick the back of the seat in front were also near the top of the list, causing anger to 48 and 47 per cent of us respectively(分別地).

Crying babies came in at fourth on the list,a pet peeve for 43 per cent of those surveyed.

1.Britons dislike flying with babies because they_________.

A.make too much noise

B.get angry easily

C.sleep right next to them

D.stay in the economy-class aisle

2.How many British travellers surveyed would like to have no-kid-zones on planes?

A.About 35%. B.About 43%.

C.About 70%. D.About 58%.

3.What kind of passengers is most disliked by British airline travellers?

A.The crying babies on a flight.

B.People with bad personal hygiene.

C.Those who have drunk too much alcohol.

D.Those who kick the back of the seat in front
