Recently I read an article in a magazine. It was about the mother who was worried about her son just because of he always kept his hair long. The mother thought that was not right, and the son felt there was nothing unusually about it. Different generations have different opinion on the same thing. That is what is meaning by “the generation gap”.We can see them in our daily life. Most of our parents like listening to old songs when young people prefer pop songs. Every time my father finds me listening to rock music,he always shouted, “ Shut it off. It’s awful ! ” How can we deal with the generation gap?

This weekly four-day physical activity schedule will get your kids excited about being active.

Tuesday

When the kids get home from school, don’t let them go straight to the TV and get settled in. Encourage them to get moving and get off the couch(沙發(fā)) by giving them a pedometer(計(jì)步器). Pedometers are the most fun when parents also use one because that turns stepping, walking and running into a game to see who can get the most steps.

Thursday

The kids have done a great job so far this week, but now they long for a little more TV time. Instead of turning on cartoons, let them watch fitness movies made just for kids. These movies encourage watchers to get up and dance along to kid-friendly music.

Saturday

Get the whole family out of the house together and over to a park. Bring lots of sports equipment, pack a healthy picnic and have a family competitive sports day. Kids and adults get into groups and play against each other in tennis, basketball or soccer. After everyone has played hard for a couple of hours, stop for a picnic and then if your family isn’t too tired, go back and play some more.

Sunday

Every child loves to play video games and there is no better time to allow kids to play them than on Sunday when no homework is due. But don’t let them play a game that forces them to sit down for hours. Dance games with a floor mat(墊子) to help kids follow the dance moves are popular to kids.

1.Parents are advised to use a pedometer together with their kids because _______.

A. they can give their kids some advice about walking

B. it can prevent them from watching TV too much

C. their kids will not use it if they don’t

D. this will allow them and their kids to have a fun competition

2.On Thursday when a kid wants to watch TV, his parents should ______.

A. let him watch it for a short time B. show fitness movies to him

C. take him out for a walk instead D. watch cartoons with him

3.According to the author, the best time for a kid to play video games is ______.

There was a story many years ago of a school teacher --- Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.

Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume(香水).

Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M. D. (醫(yī)學(xué)博士).

The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

1.What did Mrs. Thompson do on the first day of school?

A. She told the class something untrue about herself.

B. She asked the children to play with Teddy.

C. She changed Teddy’s seat to the front row.

D. She made Teddy feel ashamed.

2.What did Mrs. Thompson find out about Teddy?

A. He often told lies.

B. He needed motherly care.

C. He was good at math.

D. He enjoyed playing with others.

3.In what way did Mrs. Thompson change?

A. She taught fewer school subjects.

B. She became stricter with her students.

C. She cared more about educating students.

D. She no longer liked her job as a teacher.

4.Why did Teddy thank Mrs. Thompson at his wedding?

A. She had kept in touch with him.

B. She had sent him Christmas presents.

C. She had given him encouragement.

D. She had taught him how to judge people.

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be very difficult to let go of your grudge. But forgiveness is possible and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive have more energy, better appetite (胃口) and better sleep. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. “So it can help save on the wear and tear(消耗) on our body and make people feel more energetic.”
So when someone has hurt you, calm down first. Take plenty of breath deeply and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurts you may never think of apologizing,” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who makes you angry. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other person’s perspective(視角). You may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance, fear, even love. To gain perspective, you may write a letter to yourself from that person’s point of view.

1.The underlined word “grudge” in the first paragraph most probably means _________.

A. understanding B. forgiveness

C. pity D. anger

2.According to the writer, what is the right way to calm down after being hurt?

A. Try to make sure why you get hurt.

B. Write a letter to the person who hurt you.

C. Think about pleasant things and forget about the hurt.

D. Tell yourself to accept what others have done to you.

3.Dr. Luskin advises us not to wait for an apology after being hurt because ______.

A. people seldom want to apologize

B. we’d feel worse accepting others’ apology

C. we are not patient enough

D. people don’t mean it when they apologize

4.This passage is mainly written to explain _______.

A. how to keep yourself from being hurt

B. why and how to forgive others

C. how and when to stay calm

D. how to stay mentally healthy

“If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”

That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better.

Your eyes can tell you that glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it.

With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.

You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.

All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy, such as food, clothes and so on. To see something well, we have to touch it.

The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a bad floor. All feel different under your feet.

There are ways of learning to see well by feeling.

One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!

Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch! There you can feel everything on show. If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you’ll really see!”

1.By touching things _______.

A. you can learn more about them

B. you will learn how to reach out

C. you will have a strange feeling

D. you can tell what colors they are

2.According to the passage, your skin can feel the things EXCEPT________.

A. water

B. sounds

C. coins

D. darkness

3.Why does it say, “At first, it is not easy to feel these things?”

A. The things are used by people, too.

B. The things are hard to feel.

C. People know how to use the things.

D. These things are too familiar to you.

4.Which of the following can be the best title of the story?

A. Touching by Feeling

B. To See Better — Feel

C. To See or to Feel

D. Ways of Feeling
