From:Jakie Mok,Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date:May 20,2010
A week ago,"Sports for Life"programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play.Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it.Here is a memo (備忘錄) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sports 1:Basketball.
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible.Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park.To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay$10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2:Gym

Sports 3:Hiking
Hiking(遠足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later.Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost$75/hr.Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sports 4:Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school.Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e.2:45pm to 3:45pm).Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present.Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is$10 per visit.

9.Working with a group of baboons (狒狒) in the Namibian desert,Dr.Alecia Carter of the Department of Zoology,Cambridge University set baboons learning tasks involving a novel food and a familiar food hidden in a box.Some baboons were given the chance to watch another baboon who already knew how to solve the task,while others had to learn for themselves.To work out how brave or anxious the baboons were,Dr.Carter presented them either with a novel food or a threat in the form of a model of a poisonous snake.
She found that personality had a major impact on learning.The braver baboons learnt,but the shy ones did not learn the task although they watched the baboon perform the task of finding the novel food just as long as the brave ones did.In effect,despite being made aware of what to do,they were still too shy to do what the experienced baboon did.
The same held true for anxious baboons compared with calm ones.The anxious individuals learnt the task by observing others while those who were relaxed did not,even though they spent more time watching.
This mismatch between collecting social information and using it shows that personality plays a key role in social learning in animals,something that has previously been ignored in studies on how animals learn to do things.The findings are significant because they suggest that animals may perform poorly in cognitive (認知的) tasks not because they aren't clever enough to solve them,but because they are too shy or nervous to use the social information.
The findings may impact how we understand the formation of culture in societies through social learning.If some individuals are unable to get information from others because they don't associate with the knowledgeable individuals,or they are too shy to use the information once they have it,information may not travel between all group members,preventing the formation of a culture based on social learning.

59.What is the first paragraph mainly about?A
A.The design of Dr.Carter's research.
B.The results of Dr.Carter's research.
C.The purpose of Dr.Carter's research.
D.The significance of Dr.Carter's research.
60.According to the research,which baboons are more likely to complete a new learning task?D
A.Those that have more experience.
B.Those that can avoid potential risks.
C.Those that like to work independently.
D.Those that feel anxious about learning.
61.Which best illustrates the"mismatch"mentioned in Paragraph 4?C
A.Some baboons are intelligent but slow in learning.
B.Some baboons are shy but active in social activities.
C.Some baboons observe others but don't follow them.
D.Some baboons perform new tasks but don't concentrate.
62.Dr.Carter's findings indicate that our culture might be formed throughB.
A.storing information
B.learning from each other
C.understanding different people
D.travelling between social groups.

8.Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流).Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment.However,ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way---by studying movements of random floating garbage.A scientist with many years'experience,he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States.There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.
Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes-about 60,000 in total-fell into the ocean in a shipping accident.He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back.As expected,the company told him that they didn't.Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment.If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed,he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents.
The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海灘搜尋) because winds and currents join here,and as a result,there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area.Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed.In a year he collected reliable information on 1,600shoes.With this data,he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents,and publish the findings of their study.
As the result of his work,Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean.He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts,with 500subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand.They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.

7.There are many places to go on safari(觀賞野生動物)in Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana's Okavango Delta must rank as one of the world's most exciting wildlife journeys.
Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience.

2.People select news in expectation of a reward.This reward may be either of two kinds.One isrelated to what Freud calls the Pleasure Principle,the other to what he calls the Reality Principle.For want of better names,we shall call these two classes immediate reward and delayed reward.In general,the kind of news which may be expected to give immediate reward are news of crime and corruption, accidents and disasters, sports, social events, and human interest.Delayed reward may be expected from news of public affairs, economic matters, social problems, science, education, and health.
News of the first kind pays its rewards at once.A reader can enjoy an indirect experiencewithout any of the dangers or stresses involved.He can tremble wildly at an axe-murder,shake hishead sympathetically and safely at a hurricane,identify himself with the winning team,laugh understandingly at a warm little story of children or dogs.News of the second kind,however,pays its rewards later.It sometimes requires the reader totolerate unpleasantness or annoyance-as,for example,when he reads of the threatening foreign situation,the mounting national debt,rising taxes,falling market,scarce housing,and cancer.It has a kind of"threat value."It is read so that the reader may be informed and prepared.When a reader selects delayed reward news,he pulls himself into the world of surrounding reality to which he can adapt himself only by hard work.When he selects news of the other kind,he usually withdraws from the world of threatening reality toward the dream world.
For any individual,of course,the boundaries of these two classes are not stable.For example,asociologist may read news of crime as a social problem,rather than for its immediate reward.Acoach may read a sports story for its threat value:he may have to play that team next week.Apolitician may read an account of his latest successful public meeting,not for its delayed reward,but very much as his wife reads an account of a party.In any given story of corruption or disaster,a thoughtful reader may receive not only the immediate reward of indirect experience,but also the delayed reward of information and preparedness.Therefore,while the division of categories holds in general,an individual's tendency may transfer any story from one kind of reading to another,ordivide the experience between the two kinds of reward.
What news stories do you read?
Division of
news stories
•People expect to get (71)rewards/rewardedfrom reading news.
•News stories are roughly divided into two classes.
•Some news will excite their readers instantly while others won't.
(72)Explanationsof
the two classes
•News of immediate reward will seemingly take their readers to the very frightening scene without actual (73)involvement.
•Readers will associate themselves closely with what happens in the news stories and (74)sharesimilar feelings with those involved.
•News of delayed reward will make readers suffer,or present a(75)threatto them.
•News of delayed reward will induce the reader to (76)preparefor the reality while news of immediate reward will lead the reader to (77)withdraw from the reality.

1.The oddness of life in space never quite goes away.Here are some examples.
First consider something as simple as sleep.Its position presents its ownchallenges.The main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside the sleeping bag.If you leave your arms out,they float free in zero gravity,often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny ballet (芭蕾) dancer."I'm an inside guy,"Mike Hopkins says,who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space Station."I like to be wrapped up."
On the station,the ordinary becomes strange.The exercise bike for the American astronaut has no handlebars.It also has no sear.With no gravity,it's just as easy to pedal violently.You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want.Without gravity to help circulate air,the carbon dioxide you exhale(呼氣)has a tendency to form an invisible(隱形的)cloud around your head.You can end up with whatastronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache.
Leroy Chiao,54,an American retiredastronaut after four flights,describes what happens even before you float out of your seat."Your inner ear thinks you're falling.Meanwhile your eyes are telling you you're standing straight.That can be annoying-that's why some people feel sick."Within a couple of days-truly terrible days for some-astronauts'brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear,and space sickness disappears.
Space travel can be so delightful but at the same time invisibly dangerous.For instance,astronauts lose bone mass.That's why exercise is considered so vital that National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) puts in right on the workdayschedule.The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it is about keeping any individualastronaut healthy.NASA is worried about two things:recovery time once astronauts return home,and,more importantly,how to maintainstrength and fitness for the two and a half years or more that it would take to make a round-trip to Mars.

63.What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space?A
A.Deciding on a proper sleep position.
B.Choosing a comfortable sleeping bag.
C.Seeking a way to fall asleep quickly.
D.Finding a right time to go to sleep.
64.The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache whenC?
A.they circle around on their bikes
B.they use microcomputers without a stop
C.Theyexercise in one place for a long time
D.they watch a movie while pedaling
65.Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days becauseD?
A.their senses stop working
B.they have to stand up straight
C.they float out of their seats unexpectedly
D.their brains receive contradictory messages
66.One of NASA's major concerns about astronauts isB.
A.how much exercise they do on the station
B.how they can remain healthy for long in space
C.whether they can recover after returning home
D.whether they are able to go back to the station.
