16.The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850-1928).After immigrating from England to the USA,and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer,he moved to Chicago,where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871.In those days,it was nicknamed"the Garden City",almost certainly the source of Howard's name for his later building plan of towns.Returning to London,Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s,drawing on ideas that were popular at the time,but creating a unique combination of designs.
The nineteenthcentury poor city was in many ways a terrible place,dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities.At the same time,the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive:though it promised fresh air and nature,it suffered from agricultural depression(蕭條) and it offered neither enough work and wages,nor much social life.Howard's idea was to combine the best of town and country in a new kind of settlement,the garden city.Howard's idea was that a group of people should set up a company,borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside,far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.
Garden cities would provide a central public open space,radial avenues and connecting industries.They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt,also owned by the company,containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions.As more and more people moved in,the garden city would reach its planned limit-Howard suggested 32,000 people; then,another would be started a short distance away.Thus,over time,there would develop a vast planned house collection,extending almost without limit; within it,each garden city would offer a wide range of jobs and services,but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system,thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.

32.How did Howard get the name for his building plan of garden cities?D
A.By taking other people's advice.
B.Through the combination of different ideas.
C.Through his observation of the country life.
D.By using the nickname of the reconstructed Chicago.
33.According to Howard,garden cities should be builtB.
A.as far as possible from existing cities
B.in the countryside where the land was cheap
C.in the countryside where agriculture was developed
D.near cities where employment opportunities already existed
34.The passage mainly talks aboutC.
A.a new city in Chicago
B.the invention of the garden city
C.a well-known garden city in England
D.the differences between the countryside and the city
35.What can we learn about garden cities from the last paragraph?A
A.Their number would get larger and larger.
B.Every garden city would continue to become larger.
C.more and more people moved out of the garden city.
D.Each garden city would offer a wide range of houses.

14.Science has a lot of uses.It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up.Indeed science is so good at what it does that there's always a temptation (誘惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful.David Brooks, author of The Social Animal:The Hidden Sources of Love,Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.
Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however,is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions:What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren't?
To answer these questions,Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines.Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation (背誦)of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox (非常規(guī)的),and perhaps unfortunate way.Instead of introducing scientific theories,he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader's attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood,we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction.Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.
On the whole,Brooks'story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and,to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest.I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks'attempt to translate his tale into science.

56.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?(No more than 10 words)The purpose of writing The Social Animal./The main topics of the book.
57.Why does Brooks use a story to introduce scientific theories?(No more than 15 words)Because he tries to make his points through the story or keep reader's attention.
58.According to The Social Animal, how can we learn about the science of child development?(No more than 10 words)As Harold and Erica live through their childhood.
59.Please explain the underlined word"weighty"in English.(No more than 1 word)Serious.Or:Important.Or:Significant.Or:Great.Or:Big.Or:Crucial.Or:Heavy….
60.Do you like Brooks'way of dealing with science in The Social Animal? Why?(No more than 20 words)Yes,I do.Because he introduces scientific theories through a story, which is much easier for people to understand..

13.After a terrible electrical accident,which caused him to become both blind and deaf,the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years.The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life.His family,especially his wife,did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon,he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once.He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet,but he was struck by the lightning.Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree.He was trembling badly,but when he opened his eyes,he could hardly believe what he saw:a plough and a wall.When Mrs Edwards came running up to him,shouting to their neighbors to call for help,he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.

A.many doctors came because Robert was badly injured
