17.Most American teenagers can't wait to get rid of their"metal mouth"nickname. They count down the days they can finally take their braces(牙箍) off. However, trendy teenagers in Indonesia,Malaysia and Thailand can't wait to get them on,even if they don't need them.
Braces are the latest teenage fashion trend in Southeast Asia.Having a mouthful of metal has become so popular with Asian teens that there have been reports of many teens wearing fake braces. Many Asian beauty shops are now offering to put in cheap fake braces. There are even cheaper do-it-yourself braces such as"Hello Kitty,""Mickey Mouse"or others for a price of around $100.
Braces are considered as a sign of wealth in Southeast Asia.A real set of braces in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, for example, will cost around﹩1,200,which is a large amount for the country with a GDP of﹩345 billion(one billion is 1,000 million),compared to the US which had a GDP of $15.06 trillion (one trillion is 1,000 billion) last year.
While Asian teens may think that their colorful fake braces are cool, experts say that these trendy fashion braces can cause illness and can even lead to death.According to the New York Daily News, fake fashion braces have already been linked to the deaths of two teens in Thailand.A 17-year-old in the northeast city of Khon Kaen died from heart failure caused by a thyroid infection (甲狀腺感染) from a pair of fake fashion braces.Police also linked the death of another 14-year-old girl in Chonburi to a pair of fashion braces she had bought from an illegal shop.
Although the government is giving warnings about fake braces, the trend has been going strong for at least four years. What's worse, the trend for fake braces shows no sign of slowing down.

16.Really,peer pressure can happen at any age.(36)BWhen the situation goes against what you believe in or what you have been told by your parents,it is difficult to say"no".
One of the best ways to handle this situation is to decide how you are going to deal with it before it ever occurs,play the situation out in your mind and know what you could be faced with---whether it is smoking,drinking,drugs or doing something that you know could get you into trouble.(37)A Once you have made the choice to say"no",the most difficult part is done.
When you are faced with bad peer pressure,the best thing that you can do is to walk away.This can be the hardest thing for people to do,because it might mean that you feel embarrassed in front of you friends.(38)D Sometimes when you don't give in to peer pressure,those friends aren't going to be as interested in being friends with you.However,at least you have been true to yourself.
Bad peer pressure can lead you towards making bad decisions.It is important that you know where you want to draw lines.(39)F Many times,it will mean telling someone"no"when they want you to go against things that you believe in.But,that can be OK.(40)G The best thing is that those friends will honor your beliefs and won't try to pressure you to be someone you are not.

A.Then practice how you will respond.
B.It is always going to be a part of your life.
C.The rest will be easier when it really happens.
D.And,it might mean that you end up losing friends.
E.Some teenagers always try to get others to do the same thing.
F.Then,you have to be prepared to stand up for yourself and your beliefs.
G.When you are true to yourself,you will attract like-minded people to yourself.

15.President Coolidge's statement,"The business of America is business",still points to an important truth today-that business institutions have more prestige(威望) in American society than any other kind of organization,including the government.Why do business institutions possess this great prestige?
One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the ideal of competition than other institutions in society.Since competition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans,competitive business institutions are respected.Competition is not only good in itself,it is the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom,equality of opportunity,and hard work are protected.
Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly (壟斷)of power.In contrast to one,all-powerful government,many businesses compete against each other for profits.Theoretically,if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers,it will lose to competing business which treats its customers more fairly.Where many businsses compete for the customers'dollar,they cannot afford to treat them like inferiors or slaves.
A contrast is often made between business,which is competitive,and government,which is a monopoly.Because business is competitive,many Americans believe that it is more supportive of freedom than government,even though government leaders are elected by the people and business leaders are not.Many Americans believe,then,that competition is as important,or even more important,than democracy in preserving freedom.
Competition in business is also believed to strengthen the ideal of equality of opportunity.Competition is seen as an open and fair race where succes goes to the swiftest person regardless of his or her social class background.Competitive success is commonly seen as the American alternative to social rank based on family background.Business is therefore viewed as and expression of the idea of equality of opportunity rather than the aristocratic (貴族的)idea of inherited privilege.

32.The underlined statement"The business of America is business"in paragraph one probably means"B".
A.The business institutions in America are concerned with commerce.
B.Business is of primary concern to Americans.
C.Business problems are of great importance to the American government.
D.America is a great powerin world business.
33.Americans believe that they can realize their personal values onlyA.
A.by way of competition
B.through doing business
C.by protecting their individual freedom
D.when given equality of opportunity
34.Government is believed to differ strikingly from business in that government is characterized byD.
A.its democratic way of exercising leadership
B.its function in preserving personal freedom
C.its role in protecting basic American values.
D.its absolute control of power
35.Who can benefit from business competition?C
A.Honest businessmen.
B.People with ideas of equality and freedom.
C.Both businessmen and their customers.
D.Both business institution and government.
