Urbanization
Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human being lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago. _【1】_ In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (鄉(xiāng)村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history—a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.
Britain was only the beginning. _【2】__ The process of urbanization—the migration (遷徙) of people from the countryside to the city—was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.
In 1900, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms. __【3】__
Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninetyfive people on farms to feed five people in cities.__ 【4】__ Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite (精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus(過剩)food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.
Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country.__ 【5】_ Today, instead of needing ninetyfive farmers to feed /span>five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred nonfarmers.
A.That kept cities very small.
B.The rest live in small towns.
C.The effects of urban living on people should be considered
D.Soon many other industrial nations became urban societies.
E.But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.
F.Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.
G.Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.

【題目】The world is filled with smart, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day. A few days ago,my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic fixed it in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine sound. I was amazed. The sad truth is that great talent is not enough.
I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade told me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant(顧問)who gave me the phrase,“They are one skill away from great wealth.”
There is an old saying that goes,“JOB means ‘Just Over Broke(破產(chǎn))”. And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because schools do not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “____________They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend that young people seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.
When I ask the classes I teach,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald's?” almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald's makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonald's is excellent at business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
【1】The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that .
A. he is just one of the talented people
B. he is ready to help others
C. he has a sharp sense of hearing
D. he knows little about car repairing
【2】The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by“ ”.
A. spend more than they can afford
B. do in their own way
C. live in their own circle
D. live within what they earn
【3】Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?
A. They don't work hard enough.
B. They lack financial intelligence.
C. They don't make full use of their talents.
D. They have no specialized skills.
【4】The main purpose of the author is to tell us .
A. how young people can find a satisfactory job
B. what schools should teach about finance
C. why so many talented people are poor
D. how McDonald's makes much money

【題目】Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers(低頭族).
Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities(身份) bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.
Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real.
Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.
But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.
It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.
【1】For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragragh2?
A. To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.
B. To advertise the cartoon made by students.
C. To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.
D. To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.
【2】Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have?
A. His social skills could be affected.
B. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.
C. He will cause the destruction of the world.
D. He might get separated from his friends and family.
【3】Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed
C. Optimistic. D. Objective.
【4】What may the passage talk about next?
A. Advice on how to use a cell phone.
B. People addicted to phubbing.
C. Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing.
D. Consequences of phubbing.
