【題目】As if there weren’t enough of them in the world already, scientists have succeeded in cloning flies. The alike fruit flies are the first insects ever cloned, says the Canadian team that created them. The question everyone asks is why anyone would want to clone flies in the first place. She hopes that the insects , which are very easy to experiment with , will help to adjust the cloning process in other animals and even in humans, where the technique is being researched to aid production of therapeutic (治療的) stem cells.

In cloning, the DNA-containing nucleus of an adult cell is injected into an egg whose own nucleus(細(xì)胞核) has been removed. At the moment, the majority of cloned mice, sheep and other animals die before birth. It is thought this is because the adult DNA is not properly ‘reprogrammed’.

Using flies, researchers might discover genes that are important for this reprogramming, and that have matches in other animals. That is because it is relatively easy in flies to knock out the function of a single gene and then attempt cloning with these cells, which will test whether that gene is important. If such genes are confirmed, then in theory cloned mammalian embryos(晶胚) might be grown in selected solutions that change the activity of those genes to improve the technique’s success rate. Although some groups have attempted to clone insects before, Lloyd says this is the first time it has been successful. The team used a slight difference on the standard cloning process: they transferred nuclei taken from embryos rather than fully-grown adult cells. They sucked several nuclei (pl)out of developing fly embryos, and injected them into a fertilized(已受精的) fly egg. From over 800 early attempts, they cloned five adult insects, the group reports in the journal Genetics.

1The best title of this passage probably is _______.

A.The importance of clone

B.First insects are cloned

C.The disagreement in clone

D.The advantages of clone

2The scientists cloned flies because________.

A.there are fewer and fewer flies in the world

B.flies are easy to find and cheap to use

C.they can gain some experience before cloning other animals

D.it is safe to clone flies

3The failure of most cloned animals is due to _______.

A.the difference of other animals’ genes

B.the improper technique of clone

C.the complex of other animals

D.the improper rearrange of the adult gene

4It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______.

A.the clone of insects before used grown-up cells

B.the clone of insects were never experimented before

C.this time scientists cloned flies successfully and easily

D.based on this success, other animals will be cloned in large quantities.

The principles about applying for jobs have altered greatly lately. In the past, people preferred a handwritten application letter. However, nowadays it is becoming more and more common to apply for a job through the Internet. You can find information on the Internet about how to apply for jobs. 【題目】My name is Jake. I’m brown, and rather short, standing just a little past my master’s knees. My friend Andy once took me to a dog show. I’ve never seen so many different-looking dogs in my life! They all looked pretty and handsome, and their masters were very proud of them when they jumped and ran across so many barriers at that dog show. Andy promised that he’d let me join a dog show, too, if the organizers opened a division for my “breed”.

While I was watching that show, I remembered my friends at the pound(走失貓狗的待領(lǐng)處), where I spent two long weeks. We were kept in cages, and although we were well-fed, every day during those two weeks, I hoped to have someone touch my head and play with me.

You could just imagine how glad I was when, one day, Andy came in with his dad and pointed in my direction. I stood up on my hind legs and did a little jig (一種快步舞), and then I wagged my tail and tried to chase it. The father and his son kept laughing at what I was trying to do, and in a few minutes, I was riding on their car on the way to my new home. I was Mr. Archer’s gift for Andy’s eighth birthday. I heard him shout that I was the best gift ever!

My favorite amusement is hanging my tongue out of the car window and letting the wind blow on my face. I just love long drives! It is during these times that I think of all my friends whom I left behind at the dog pound. I hope that soon, little boys or girls would also pick them and give them new homes, so they would be able to enjoy walks in the park and trips to the beach, as I do now.

1Why didn’t Jake join the dog show?

A. Because he wasn’t handsome enough.

B. Because his “breed” was not included.

C. Because Andy didn’t allow him to join in.

D. Because he couldn’t jump and run across barriers.

2What can we learn about Jake when he was at the pound?

A. He couldn’t get enough food.

B. He couldn’t enjoy full freedom.

C. He had to stand all the time.

D. He was satisfied with his life.

3Why did Mr. Archer come to the pound that day?

A. To donate some food. B. To volunteer at the pound

C. To find his son a gift. D. To spend his holiday

4According to the last paragraph, what wish does Jake have?

A. Having more long drives with Andy.

B. Meeting his friends at the pound again.

C. More boys and girls coming to play with him.

D. His friends at the pound being adopted.

【題目】閱讀理解

I passed my driving test at the fourth attempt. You might think that means I'm not as safe as someone who passed on their first attempt. But would you feel safer with no driver at all? Maybe not, and that's why automotive firms have included driverassist functions in their driverless cars. This allows the human driver to take over if there is a problem.

Google is one producer that has prototype driverless cars. These cars have been newly equipped with autosteering wheels and conventional controls to allow normal driving. But this is just a stage the vision is to have fully automated cars very soon. The director of Google's selfdrive project, Chris Urmson, hopes his 11yearold son will never have to take a driving test. To achieve that, the cars need to be on the roads in five years. He says driverless cars will greatly reduce accidents and traffic jams.

According to Chris, about 1.2 million people are killed on the roads around the world each year. That number is equivalent to a jet falling out of the sky every day. He thinks gradual changes to existing car designs are not enough to deal with the problems. “If we are really going to make changes to our cities, get rid of parking lots, we need selfdrive cars,” he says.

Google's prototypes have covered over a million kilometers on the road. They have also had to deal with unexpected situations, such as a child driving a toy car in the road, and a woman in an electric whelchair chasing a duck. In each case, the car reacted safely.

Some are not convinced. Sven Beiker of Stanford University thinks driverless cars will still need human input in extreme circumstances.

【1】According to Paragraph 1, what is the author's chief concern about driverless cars?

A.Functions. B.Safety.

C.Price. D.Appearance.

【2】Chris Urmson mentioned his 11yearold son in order to show that ________.

A.traditional cars are harmful for kids

B.his son is not good at driving

C.his son is a slow learner in driving

D.driverless cars will come soon

【3】What is Chris Urmson's comment on selfdrive cars?

A.They can solve many existing problems.

B.They are safer than a jet plane.

C.They can completely change our cities.

D.They should change gradually.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Google's prototypes will be tested on the roads soon.

B.Selfdrive cars are not designed for children or women.

C.Concerns remain about the reliability of selfdrive cars.

D.Driving tests will be easier to pass in the near future.
