【題目】The idea of Pygmalion effect is known as “selffulfilling prophecy (預(yù)言)”, which 1 (base) on a story by Ovid about Pygmalion, a sculptor and prince of Cyprus, 2 created an ivory statue of his ideal woman. The statue which he called Galatea was 3 beautiful that he immediately fell in love with it. He begged the goddess Aphrodite to breathe life into the statue and make 4 (she) his own. Aphrodite granted Pygmalion his wish. 5 statue came to life and the couple married and lived happily ever after.

There were a few 6 (success) experiments carried based on this, and the most famous is the one on the students of a UK based school. In the study the pupils were rated randomly, 7 (range) from excellent to poor in the beginning of the year. These ratings were then handed over to their teachers.

At the end of the year high corelation was found between actual 8 (perform) and rating. The reason was that the teachers boosted the excellent rated pupils all the time to perform better and also that they trusted them to do better.

This concept was later used in a movie 9 (call) My Fair Lady, where Professor Higgins transformed a flower girl to win the beauty contest. Though this was done 10 (win) a bet, Professor Higgins always showed trust in the flower girl to become the duchess.

【題目】Bendable wings covered with overlapping (重疊部分) pieces looking like fish scales could be used to build more controllable, fuelefficient aircraft, a new study finds.

Nowadays, conventional aircraft typically rely on ailerons (副翼) to help control the way the planes tilt (傾斜) as they fly. However, when the Wright brothers flew the first airplane, Flyer 1, over a century ago, they used no ailerons but wires that pulled and stretched the woodandcanvas wings, to control the plane.

“Scientists have long sought to develop aircraft that can change their wings during flight, just as birds can. However, most previous attempts have failed because they relied on heavy mechanical control structures within the wings. These structures were also complex and unreliable,” said Neil Gershenfeld, a physicist and director of the Centre for Bits and Atoms at MIT.

The new wing consists of a system of tiny, strong and lightweight modules (組件). The shape of the wing can be changed uniformly along its length using two small motors, which apply a twisting pressure to each wingtip. These wings are covered in “skins” of overlapping strips of flexible material like fish scales. These strips move across each other as the wings change themselves, providing a smooth outer surface, the researchers explained.

Wind tunnel tests of these wings showed that they at least matched the aerodynamic (氣動(dòng)) properties of conventional wings, at about onetenth the weight. “Initial tests using remotely piloted aircraft made with these wings have shown great promise,” said Benjamin Jenett, a graduate student at the Centre for Bits and Atoms at MIT.

The new modular structures the scientists developed could be manufactured quickly in mass quantities and then installed by teams of small robots. These modular structures also can be disassembled more easily, making repairs simpler.

“Still, the first aircraft built using this strategy will not be a passenger jet,” Gershenfeld said. “Instead, the technology will likely first be tested on unmanned aircrafts, leading to aircrafts flying for a long time, to help deliver Internet access or medicine to remote villages.”

1Why is the Wright brothers' airplane mentioned in the text?

A. To show the history of aircrafts.

B. To show the development of wings.

C. To show the need to improve planes.

D. To show the structure of conventional planes.

2What makes planes fly like birds when they tilt?

A. Their ailerons. B. Wires and pulleys.

C. Changeable wings. D. Mechanical control structures.

3What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A. The shape of the new wings.

B. The purpose of the overlapping strips.

C. The working principle of the new wings.

D. The result of windtunnel tests of these wings.

4What does the underlined word “disassemble” mean in Paragraph 6?

A. Replace. B. Analyze.

C. Put away. D. Take apart.

【題目】閱讀理解
It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.
In recent years, many writers have begun to speak of the 'decline of class ' and 'classless society ' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.
But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging study of pubic opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in a particular class; 73 percent agreeed that class was still a vital part of British society.; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an imprtant part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification.
One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during the 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounds 'educated ' and 'soft '. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional(地區(qū)的) city accents. These accents were seen as 'common ' and 'ugly '. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.
In recent years, however, young upper midder-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song ' Common People ' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may ' want to live like common people ' they can never appreciate the reality of a working class life.
(1)A recent study of pubic opinion shows that in modern Britain _________.
A.it is time to end class distinction
B.most people belong to middle class
C.it is easy to recognize a person's class
D.people regard themselves socially different
(2)The word stratification in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to_________.
A.variety
B.division
C.authority
D.qualification
(3)The study in the US showed that BBC English was regarded as _________.
A.regional
B.educated
C.prejudiced
D.unattractive
(4)British attitudes towards accent_________.
A.have a long tradition
B.are based on regional status
C.are shared by the Americans
D.have changed in recent years
(5)What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The middle class is expanding.
B.A person's accent reflects his class.
C.Class is a key part of British society.
D.Each class has unique characteristics.

【題目】Most heavy teens’ attempts1(lose) don’t work, but a new study shows a big secret of those who do succeed.

They do it more2 their own sake rather than to impress their peers or please their parents.

“Most parents have the view that their teens are 3(large) influenced by other people’s perceptions of them,” said Chad Jensen, 4 psychologist at Brigham Young University. “Our 5(finding) suggest that teens have motivations that are more intrinsic. One implication is 6 parents should help to focus their teen on healthy behaviours for the sake of being healthy more than for social acceptance.

Jensen and his students at BYU looked in depth at the success stories of 40 formerly overweight teens. On average the participants shed 30 pounds, 7(move) them from the obese to the normal weight category. They also maintained their healthier weight for a full year. More than 60 percent8 (describe) their health as the primary motive. About 43 percent identified peer acceptance as a factor.

In another interview, nearly all of the teens emphasized that it was their own9 (decide) to lose weight. According to teens, parents provided the most help simply by modeling healthy behaviours and 10(provide) healthier options for meals and snacks.

【題目】Most people say that they do not usually feel confident. But exciting things can happen when we actually believe in ourselves. Here is a man who believed in his own ability even as a boy, and that confidence helped shape his adult life.

At the turn of the last century, a young boy quit school to help with the family expenses. When he was fifteen, he became interested in automobiles(汽車) and worked in a garage. He subscribed to a correspondence course on automobiles and, after a long day in the garage, studied at the kitchen table in the lamplight.

When he felt ready, he walked into the Frayer-Miller Automobile Company of Columbus, Ohio. When Mr. Frayer noticed him, he asked, “Well, what do you want?”

“I just thought I’d tell you I’m coming to work here tomorrow morning,” the boy replied.

“Oh! Who hired you?”

“Nobody yet, but I’ll be on the job in the morning. If I’m not worth anything, you can fire me.”

Early the next morning the boy returned to the plant. Noticing the floor was thick with metal shavings and accumulated dirt, the boy got a broom and set out to clean the place.

Because of his self-confidence and work ethic, the boy’s future was predictable. He went on to stand out in many fields, including automobile racing, piloting World War I planes and founding one of America’s largest airline companies ---- Eastern Airlines.

People who become more confident habitually encourage themselves. Without confidence, we are not likely to move far in the direction of our dreams. It is important that we always believe in ourselves. In order to reach victory, we must believe in ourselves even when we make mistakes

Advice for High School Students
As a person who is graduating from high school very soon, I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students. I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me.
Do not value first impression highly. Don't dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that. Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance.
Don't try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you. It is a huge waste of time.
Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. Don't argue with them and just obey them.
Realize a high school is not the real world. The real world isn't a closed environment. What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn't working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.
A. Do not be too quick to judge.
B. So just learn to say the word “No” a lot.
C. Listen to their advice and consider it carefully.
D. Many of these are based on regrets that I have.
E. Bad habits are hard to break and remain with you for a long time.
F. Don't spend any effort trying to please others who will never like you.
G. It is a free society where people accept responsibility for their actions.
