The First Americans
There was a time long ago when a land bridge connected Asia and North America. The first settlers in North America crossed this land bridge from what is now Siberia to Alaska. The people who made this initial crossing were probably following the animals they used for food.
Finally, the oceans rose and the land bridge between the continents disappeared. The settlers, who I shall call the “First Americans”, could not return to their homeland.
For the next few thousand years, the First Americans moved south and east throughout North and South America. They made the journey all the way from Alaska to the southern tip of South America, a distance of more than 10,000 miles.
In the far north, above the Arctic Circle, the First Americans became hunters of the ocean. In the summer, they gathered berries and other plants. In the winter, they stayed in lodges much of the time preparing for the next summer. It was a hard life, but they learned to survive in these terrible conditions.
Farther south, in what is now Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, the First Americans became cliff dwellers. They began by living in caves that already existed in the cliffs. The dwellings they built in many ways resembled today's apartment buildings.
They built a system of dams and canals so they could store and use water almost any time of the year. They were so successful that they could raise fruits and vegetables that were not found naturally in the desert.
A.They also discovered foods like corn and potatoes.
B.Along the way, they established many different civilizations.
C.They discovered how to add to the caves by building structures of wood and stone.
D.People living near each other tended to share similar environments and customs.
E.They built boats of animal skins and hunted or fished for their food.
F.They would have to survive in the New World they had discovered.
G.The First Americans of the Southwest learned to water the desert.

【題目】How to get siblings (兄弟姐妹)to get along
One of the greatest gifts of parenthood is seeing your children form a relationship with each other that is independent of you. By giving them someone else to play with you can free up some time for yourself. Here are four techniques you can use to help your children appreciate each other while they are young.
1. 【1】 The No.1 thing parents can do to help their kids stay on good terms with each other is not to compare them with each other. Never say “Your sister never...” or “Why can’t you do what your brother does?” 【2】
2. Stay out of the way. Try not to get too involved(參與) in your kids’ arguments. Learning cooperation and problem-solving is an important skill in life. 【3】 And don’t blame the older one for not “knowing better.” That puts pressure on the older child and leads to unhappiness.
3. Activities and opportunities. Have your kids go to their siblings’ games and activities. 【4】 “My kids go to each other’s activities, and take part in activities together,” says Patricia Walters-Fischer, mother of two. Not only do her children go, but they also offer support, encouraging each other before a big game or performance and offering comfort when things don’t go well.
4. Vacations. Don’t ignore the value of a family vacation for bringing siblings together When kids are away from their friends and forced to spend time together, they often enjoy each other 【5】 In fact, a weekend camping trip offers some of the best opportunities for working together, having fun and experiencing something new.
A. Don’t compare.

【題目】Mrs Mullen had just got a new heart. She’d waited a year for it, she told me— not that she was complaining. In fact, Mrs Mullen never complain about anything. She just got on with it. Although she was getting over a serious operation, she didn’t even like to bother the nurses for a painkiller. She put me, and most of my patients in the hospital, to shame.
My generation are a generation of complainers. We think the world owes us something. But if the world owes anyone anything, it owes people like Mrs Mullen. She left school at 14, even though she’d won a place at grammar school. She worked in a factory until she retired. She never had a day off sick in her life and never had a holiday — not even when she gave birth to her three children. That’s nearly 50 years of hard work. I’ve never worked as hard as Mrs Mullen, and I’ll almost certainly never have to.
Mrs Mullen recovered well and soon left hospital. It never occurred to me that I’d see her again, so I couldn’t believe my eyes when a few weeks later I went to buy a sandwich from the hospital Friends’ shop.
“What are you doing here?” I asked. “You’re supposed to be resting.”
“Oh I am,” she replied. “It’s only a few hours a week. I saw the ad for volunteers while I was staying here. It’s my way of saying thank you for all that this hospital has done for me.”
Thank you? Mrs Mullen is the sort of person who gives back more than she takes. I asked for a cheese and tomato sandwich. She handed me egg instead — it was all they had got. I hate egg, but I decided to eat it anyway and not to complain.
【1】Mrs Mullen made the author feel ashamed because ______.
A. he liked bothering others
