【題目】 Attitude Is Everything Jerry was the kind of guy who was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say.
One day I asked him, “I don’t get it! You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?” Jerry replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a bad mood or in a good mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.” Soon thereafter, I left the city and we lost touch. Several years later, I heard Jerry did something surprising: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry survived. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of care, Jerry was released from the hospital with pieces of the bullets(子彈) still in his body.
I saw Jerry six months after the accident. I asked him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,” Jerry replied. “Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or to die. I chose to live. ”“Weren’t you scared?” I asked. Jerry continued, “The paramedics(護理人員) were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But in the emergency room, the facial expressions of the doctors and nurses really scared me. In their eye, I read, ‘He’s a dead man.’ I knew I need to take actions.” “What did you do?” I asked. “Well, a nurse asked me if I was allergic to anything,” said Jerry.“The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Yes! Bullets!’ Over their laughter, I told them, ‘Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.’”

【題目】A typical school day in the UK starts around 8:30 am. This is often even earlier elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7:30 am in the US. The average teenager ideally needs eight to nine hours’ sleep each night, but in reality a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much. A lot of the problems arise because our sleep patterns are not fixed, and they change as we grow.
So a later school start time could help to solve this problem, by ensuring to get their eight plus hours of sleep and react properly to their body’s natural rhythms (規(guī)律). There has been a general shift over the past 25 years to shorten the school day. This is not at the cost of teaching time (which has remained constant) but at the cost of natural breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks.
Later start times could help teens’ grades and health. This is mainly because it makes the management of children easier. Supervising (監(jiān)管) hundreds of children “playing” requires effective staffing (人員配備). And there is always the fear that behavior worsens during breaks. So the theory goes that having them in class and strictly supervised must be better.
But this means that students barely have enough time to absorb what they were doing in maths before suddenly they are thrust into ancient history. And teaching staff also transit from one class to another, with hardly a rest or time to refocus.
Clearly rethinking the school day could benefit everyone involved. Anyway, it could also lead to better achievement in teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the mornings. For teachers, it could also mean a less stressful day all around and what could be better than that?
【1】How do schools often shorten the school day?
A. They reduce children’s lunch time and lesson breaks.
B. They reduce the teaching time.
C. They properly adjust children’ natural rhythms.
D. They increase more holidays.
【2】What’s the purpose of the children’ short lesson breaks according to the text?
A. To supervise children more easily.
B. To make children quickly take in what they. Learned.
C. To reduce children’s excitement.
D. To make children behave better in class.
【3】What can we learn about later school start time from the text?
A. It will add to the teacher’s pressure.
B. It has always been there for 25 years.
C. Parents may support it.
D. It benefits the students only.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A. The benefits of a less stressful day.
B. The benefits of later school start time.
C. How to solve teenagers’ sleep problem.
D. The reasons why teenagers sleep differently.

【題目】Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany on December 7, 1770. His father, Johann Beethoven, also a musician, wanted his son to be a genius and encouraged him to develop his musical talents. Johann was so determined to make his son into a successful musician that he would pull poor Ludwig out of bed in the middle of the night and force the young boy to practice piano until the early hours of the morning.
At the age of eleven, Ludwig van Beethoven received professional piano and composition training in Bonn, and within ten years he became well known in Vienna for his imagination when creating music on the piano. He continued to live there and became very interested in the construction of pianos, which developed into the modern grand concert piano.
Things changed for Beethoven in 1798 when his hearing was becoming impaired. He composed the First Symphony and Septet Op 20 and performed them on April 2, 1800, and it won great success. However, his hearing continued to worsen, and he began to separate himself from his family and friends in order to avoid conversation.
After the performance of his Ninth Symphony, he turned around to see the warm applause of the audience and broke down in tears when he realized that he couldn’t hear them. Fighting against depression (抑郁) and a disorder, Beethoven continued to produce music by using special equipment that helped him to hear his symphonies. This equipment was a thin stick connected with the soundboard of his piano. Biting it, he was able to feel vibrations (震動) of sound. The music that he created during this period was filled with heroism and struggle, and went on to become his most famous compositions.

【題目】Swiss researchers said Monday they have developed a wireless camera system to monitor vital signs in premature babies, a move that could replace uncomfortable and highly inaccurate skin sensors (傳感器) which produce false alarms in up to 90 percent of cases, mainly set off by the baby’s movement.
“This is a cause of discomfort for the babies, because we have to check on them every time,” said Jean-Claude Fauchere, a doctor at University Hospital Zurich’s newborn clinic.
His hospital is preparing to begin tests of a new, contactless system created by researchers at the EPFL polytechnical university in Lausanne and at the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology.
The system designed in Switzerland should allow premature babies kept warm in incubators (恒溫箱) to be medically monitored using highly sensitive cameras that detect the newborn’s pulse by analyzing its skin color, which changes so slightly every time its heart beats.
“Breathing is monitored by measuring movements of its chest and shoulders. At night, infrared (紅外線的) cameras take over, and monitoring can be carried out non-stop,” the statement said.
The visual system was designed by CSEM researchers, who chose cameras sensitive enough to detect minute changes in skin color, while the EPFL researchers designed algorithms (運算程序) to process the data in real time.
“We ran an early study on adults, where we looked at a specific part of skin on their foreheads,” EPFL doctoral student Sibylle Fallet said. “With our algorithms we can track this area when the person moves, and use tiny changes in their color to determine the pulse,” she said. “The tests showed that the cameras produced practically the same results as conventional sensors.”
Once the system has been widely tested on premature babies, it could one day replace skin sensors altogether, the schools said.
【1】What is the advantage of the wireless camera system?
A. It is light and painless. B. It is mobile and effective.
C. It is cheap and convenient. D. It is comfortable and accurate.
【2】What is the key for the wireless camera to monitor a premature baby?
A. Its non-stop measurement.
B. Good condition of incubators.
C. Its sensitivity to sense skin color change.
D. The algorithms to process the data in time.
【3】It be inferred from what Sibylle Fallet said that .
A. their early study on adults was successful
B. the system has been used on premature babies
C. the visual system can sense the people’s pulse
D. the wireless cameras will replace conventional sensors
【4】What’s the schools’ attitude towards the visual system?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Unconcerned. D. Uncertain.
