We spend hours, days and years of our lives in education. But how perfect do you think your school is? Imagine you could decide your ideal school. What would it be like? What would you be doing? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is what they said.
Sonia from Italy: I’d like a room where we can go and relax and play computer games and chat with friends. Some older pupils in the school have this but I think there should be a place for everyone to go when they want to switch off from the lessons.
Richard form USA: I think it would be great to have a day off every week, as well as the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. I’m sure we could learn just as much in fewer hours.
David from UK: The school dinners are absolutely disgusting. There is a little shop called a “tuck shop” which we can go to in our breaks but it just sells rubbish. I’d like to be able to buy fruit and healthy snacks.
Hannah from Australia: My school environment is great – especially the sports facilities. We’ve got a swimming pool and tennis courts. It’s teachers I’d change. I think they should give us more freedom and choice about how we study and what we study. I also think it’s ridiculous that we have to wear a school uniform.
Sam form Mexico: I’d like clean toilets and showers, a big library, big lockers and a restaurant. Not much to ask for.

one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed(解散). As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible (負責(zé)任) for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized(強調(diào)) the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating(欺騙) themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously(認真地) about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued(繼續(xù)) to believe that I had cheated on the test.

Directions: Complete the following passage by filling in each blank with one word that best fits the context.
Baby survives after train hits pram
The CCTV footage (片段)shows a baby’s pram (嬰兒車)rolling off a train platform as the mother makes a mad rush to save her son, 48 she is too late and it falls 49 the rails in front of an incoming train. This heart-stopping scene happened yesterday at Ashburton station in Melbourne, Australia. But the story has a 50 ending: the six-month-old baby survived with just 51 cut on his forehead, although the pram was dragged about 35 meters by the braking train. The nurse Jon Wright said the boy just “needed a feed and a sleep”.
“Luckily, he was strapped (綁) into his pram at the time, which probably saved 52 life. I think the child is extremely 53 ,” Wright told the Herald Sun newspaper after the baby was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The footage shows the mother taking her hands off the three-wheeled pram, which begins to roll 54 the platform edge.
The driver put on the brakes 55 he saw the pram fall in front of him and fortunately the train was already slowing down to stop at the station. Rail firm Connex is to look into how the pram rolled off the platform. The accident came one day after Connex started a child safety awareness campaign warning parents to keep babies strapped into their prams at all times while on platforms.

I have a special rule for travel: never carry a map. Sometimes I get lost, but I usually have a good time. I can practice a new language, meet new people, and learn new customs. And I find out about different “styles” of directions every time I ask, “ How can I get to the post office?”
In Japan, most streets don’t have names; people use landmarks in their directions. For example, the Japanese will say to the travelers “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not mountains, so the land is very flat (平的),in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. For example, they will say: “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh”, they answer, “It’s about five minutes from here.” They don’t know how many miles away it is.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
66. The underlined word landmarks in the second paragraph means ____.
A. easily recognizable (可辨認的) objects by which one can tell one’s position
B. big markets where people can tell you how to get to the post office
C. tall buildings in front of which is the post office
D. bus stops which are near the post office you are looking for
67. From the passage we learn that in the American Midwest countryside, ____.
A. there are no buildings B. there are no landmarks
C. the fields are very flat D. there are some hills
68. Which of the following shows distance in time?
A. The Japanese. B. People in Los Angeles.
C. People in Greece. D. People in the American Midwest.
69. Why don’t the Greeks try to give directions?
A. Because they often say “Follow me.”
B. Because they will lead you to the post office.
C. Because they don’t understand any foreign language.
D. Because tourists don’t understand their language.
70. The passage tells us that ____.
A. there are different ways to get to the post office
B. people everywhere can tell you how far the post office is
C. in Greece there is much trouble in finding the post office
D. there are different customs in different places
