China may send naval ships to the seas off Somalia to help the fight against piracy(海盜行為) there, Chinese media on Wednesday quoted a Vice Foreign Minister as saying at the United Nations, Reuters reported.

"China is seriously considering sending naval ships to the Gulf of Aden and waters off the Somali coast for escorting operations in the near future," the Xinhua news agency quoted He Yafei as saying. He Yafei, speaking at a Security Council ministerial meeting, said that China welcomed global cooperation in the fight against Somali piracy, and supported efforts by other countries to send ships to the region, Xinhua reported.

Earlier this month a leading Chinese military strategist, Major-General Jin Yinan, urged the government to send ships, in comments generating debate about combating piracy in a country which has generally confined its navy to waters near home. Jin told a Chinese radio interviewer that "nobody should be shocked" if his government one day decided to send navy ships to deal with the pirates, whose recent victims have included ships from Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Jin is the head of a strategy institute at China's National Defense University.

While the military strategist is urging an active part, other scholars think the government should be cautious before a decision is made. The Chinese military ships should go there "only within the UN framework," said Pang Zhongying, a professor of international relations with Renmin University of China. Pang added that he also had some concerns over the Chinese navy's capability. "I don't think the Chinese navy has the capability to fight against unconventional threats far in the ocean," he said, adding supplying and refueling in the Indian Ocean are key challenges.

A sharp increase in attacks at sea this year in the busy Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean off Somalia has pushed up insurance costs, brought the Somali pirates tens of millions of dollars in ransom(贖金) and prompted foreign warships to the area. Among the captured ships are a Saudi supertanker loaded with $100 million of crude oil, the Sirius Star, and a Ukrainian cargo ship carrying some 30 Soviet-era tanks. The victims have also included a Hong Kong-flagged ship with 25 crew aboard and a Chinese mainland fishing boat reported seized off Kenya. NATO ships began anti-piracy operations off the Somali coast in late October, but they have failed to stop the attacks.

I will be traveling to Australia as a Student Ambassador with People to People. People to People arranges for American students to travel all around the world to learn about other cultures, and to help others understand American culture. The program was founded by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote peace through understanding.

I had to put in many hours of special work to get to this point. First, a teacher nominated (推薦) me, and then I attended an informational meeting about the program. The application process included an interview, and finally, I was accepted.

That’s when the hard work really began. In addition to attending monthly meetings to prepare for the big trip, my parents encouraged my twin sister Beth (also participating in the program) and me to raise $ 2,000 each to help pay for the cost. And so the fund-raising began. We did everything from selling candy bars to selling an old car to decorating people’s mailboxes during the holiday season. We also babysat, washed cars, held a yard sale, and washed windows. After months of hard work I had raised a total of $2319.87! Combined, Beth and I raised over $ 4500.00!

Now I have a problem-packing. Yes, I know it sounds unimportant, but my suitcase seems to have shrunk (收縮) as I placed my belongings inside. According to airline regulations (規(guī)定), a suitcase can be no larger than 54 inches and weigh no more than 44 pounds. For a person who likes to wear a different outfit every day, packing all my clothes into such a small space seemed an impossible task. However, I have lessened my load and my suitcase which started out weighting overweight now checks in at a mere 36. Apart from a slightly bloated (臃腫) carry-on bag, my luggage is definitely manageable.

I doubt that I will not get much sleep tonight because I am so excited! I know that what lies ahead is going to be the trip of lifetime!

When does the author write the passage?

       A. Before leaving for Australia.                B. Several months before the journey.

       C. Just hours after reaching the destination.      D. The night when she was accepted.

Which of the following is not the aim of People to People program?

       A. To promote peace through understanding.     B. To collect money for traveling.

       C. To make American culture known to others.    D. To learn about other cultures.

Which is the correct order of the author’ preparation for the journey?

       a. being accepted as a member

       b. raising money for the trip

       c. attending a meeting about the program

       d. packing belongings

       e. being nominated by the teacher

       A.e, a, b, c, d        B.a(chǎn), c, e, d, b        C.e, c, a, d, b         D.e, c, a, b, d

What does the author think of the journey?

A.It could be a tiring expensive journey.

B.It could be long-lasting journey, which needs taking all daily necessities.

C.It could be an exciting, unforgettable journey.

D.It could be an overseas journey, during which she would experience hard labor.

Jogging (慢跑) is basically running at a steady (平穩(wěn)的) speed over short or long distances. It has become popular some twenty years and remained a favorite way of keeping fit for lots of people.

People jog around college campuses, in parks, in the countryside and even in urban areas. Special courts, fields and running tracks are not necessary. Similarly, no special equipment is required — no costly hats, or balls, and no expensive sports kit. Good quality running shoes are advisable, but otherwise the jogger can simply wear loose, comfortable clothing.

It’s not unusual to see joggers exercising in the height of summer or in the depth of winter! Jogging is a solo (單獨的) sport. You don’t need to wait until you have formed a team or found a partner. You can jog alone. A few words of warning, however: lone female joggers should be especially careful to choose sensible jogging routes, particularly at night time.

You just need to be basically healthy and after basic warming up, you are ready to begin. You simply start running, gently, and then build up to a steady pace. Do not overtire yourself by trying to go too fast. A steady, comfortable pace is your aim.

It’s good for the lungs, the heart and the circulation (循環(huán)). It’s easy and it’s convenient. Why don’t you try it? If you require more information, talk to one of the instructors at the sports centre. We are only too happy to help. Please remember: if you do decide to jog, talk to your doctor first if you have any health worries. Happy jogging!
