It is a typical case. A young professional has just moved to a new city. She is very active in her new job but wishes to meet people socially outside of work. How does she do this?

Signing up for a night class is always a good starting point. Not only is it an ideal way to meet like-minded people,it can also be a great new learning experience. Pubs and clubs can be a good meeting place but call be a bit hard if you are on your own.

  Join a gym

GL-14 health club in Manchester city centre is a gym which also has lots of member activities outside the gym from charity fashion shows to dinner dances giving members a chance to socialize away from the treadmill(繁忙的工作). Or if you want a gym with a difference, try a“Green Gym”for people who want to exercise but wish to be outdoors and doing something that will benefit the environment at the same time. The“work out”could involve such activities as practical conservation or gardening work. It’s a great way to get people’s heart and muscle working. And many agree that meeting other people and having a matter and a laugh is a big attraction of the scheme.

  Reading groups

In the Reading Groups,Jenny Hartley suggested that there may be as many as 50,000 people in reading groups in the UK. They range from informal groups of friends or colleagues who meet in someone’s home or at the local pub,to discuss a book. If you want something a bit more structured, lots of libraries have reading groups and could have a broader group of members.

  Statistics

The BBC recently conducted a survey called Going solo:single life in the 21st century. You can look at the overall results or search by area. It found that:

*69% of people thought that the gym was a good place to meet new

*Pubs or clubs were considered to be good meeting places by 58% of people in the UK

*68% thought that work was a good place to meet people

*72% thought that internet chat was not an ideal way to meet people

Drinking a lot of water does not do any good to the body, according to two experts in the United States. In fact, they warn, drinking too much water could be, in certain cases, harmful.

In a study, Dr Stanly Goldfarb and Dr Dan Negoianu, both of the Renal, Electrolyte and Hypertension Division at the University of Pensylvania, the United States, have denied the popular belief that drinking a lot of water clears body toxins(毒素)better, improves skin, and helps reduce weight.

Dr Goldfarb and Dr Negoianu say that they found little proof to back the public opinion that drinking 8 glasses of water every day benefits health. At the same time, they fond little proof of harm in drinking 8 glasses of water every day.

It is widely believed that in some cases-such as athletes, people who live in hot, dry environments, and those with certain medical conditions-drinking a lot of water indeed helps, but no studies have been done to prove the benefits of this practice in average, healthy people, the website medheadlines.com reports.

The study at the University of Pennsylvania also examined reports that some people experienced increased headaches when their consumption(消耗)of water was low. In one small study, which the doctors reviewed, the group drinking the most water reported fewer headaches than the control group, “but the difference in the number of headaches was o small between the two groups as to be considered unimportant.”

The researchers concluded that there is no scientific proof to support that average, healthy people need to drink at least 8 glasses of water each each day.

The website medheadines.com says that, according to an Indian doctor, drinking too much water is harmful. If water enters the body more quickly than it can be removed, problems can occur.

40.What’s the key message delivered in the passage?

A.Drinking too much water might bring harm.

B.Whether to drink enough water makes no difference.

C.Drinking too much water may cause headaches.

D.Average, healthy people should drink more water.

41.We can learn from the passage that 8 glasses of water every day_______ .

A.proves good for the body           B.has scientific proof of harm

C.is sure to reduce headaches     D.is generally considered necessary

42.Who may agree that drinking lots of water helps to lose weight?

A.The two experts.             B.The Indian doctor.

       C.The general public.      D.The website.

43.According to the passage, we know that_______.

A.the website medheadlnes.com is developed by an Indian doctor

B.the study was carried out by two experts with an Indian doctor

C.the two experts performed the study at the University of Pennsylvania

D.drinking 8 glasses of water every day can cure certain diseases

Thousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets. The tickets cost only ﹩0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of ﹩90 million. That was the second largest lottery jackpot(積累獎(jiǎng)金)in history.

More than 87 million tickets were bought for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80.The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million. But that little chance certainly didn’t affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were selling at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second.

Experts say many people buy lottery tickets because they just want to have a piece of the action.Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they’ll probably never have.

But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized(合法化的) gambling. Some critics note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.

Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice(惡習(xí)), under the name of social progress. No matter whether you regard state lotteries right or not, you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans.

The main idea of the passage is that

A.lotteries are of great benefit to everyone who buys them

B.playing a lottery is just like investing in the stock market

C.a(chǎn) lot of people buy lottery tickets, but lotteries cause disagreement

D.lotteries are just legalized vice

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Politicians like lotteries because they don’t have to pay extra tax.

B.The popularity of lotteries in America actually is social progress.

C.Some critics don’t like lotteries because many poor people waste their money on them.

D.People love the lottery because it is a stock market.
