Perhaps the most interesting thing about the success story of Zantrex-3, however, is that it is far from unique. There are hundreds of similar products on the market today, and they are bought by millions of Americans. Three surfers rushed to save a man’s life after he was left drifting on a notorious stretch of water.
The men stayed with Greg Popple for 30 minutes and had to be rescued themselves by helicopter as the drama unfolded.
The 45-year-old had floated out on a body board near Hutchwns Point at 8:30 am. He found himself in trouble about half-a-mile from the shore and dangerously close to rocks. Surfers Graig Evans, 31, Robert Miles, 19, and Owain Daviees, 23, were risking their own safety to keep him floating for 30 minutes. Luckily a passer-by noticed what was going on and raised the alarm. Porthcawl Coastguard, Porthcaw Lifeboat and an RAF helicopter all took part in the rescue.
“The man who got into trouble was a body boarder-there was a big tide where he was,” said Joe Missen. “Three other surfers spotted he was in difficulty and he was going down. They kept him afloat because he was in a state of shock and out of energy. If Mr. Popple was closer to the rocks, it could have been a lot worse, but they managed to keep him from harm”.
Mr. Missen’s mum Alison, also part of the rescue team, said, “That part of the water is notorious for taking people out to nowhere”.
The three men had clocked off a night shift at Ford Motor Company shortly before the incident.
“I headed straight down to the beach for a surf, when I saw him flailing(揮動(dòng)). We just swam straight out to him and kept him calm while the help came”.
The four men were taken to the life boat house to recover, without injuries.

Being alone in outer space can be frightening. That is one reason why astronauts on solo(單獨(dú)的) space flight were given plenty of work to keep them 21 . They were also in constant communication with people on the earth . 22 , being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine(潛水艇) voyages. It will also happen on 23 space flights in the future. Will there be special problems of adjustment under such conditions?
Scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of 24 is. When men are 25 together for a long period, they begin to feel uneasy. Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. In the limited space over a long period of time, however, these little habits may become very 26 .
Apparently, although no one wants to be 27 all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called a stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of 28 or stress.
People who are well-adjusted are able to 29 stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in 30 our astronauts. These men undergo a long period of testing and training. One of the things tested is their behavior under stress.

My first performance in front of an audience was coming up soon.
I tried as hard as I could to remain calm, but my heart was racing. I looked down at my sweat-covered, shaking hands.
I looked up again at the audience, realizing that these were real people. They were not just my mum and dad, who would say, “Good job!” even if I messed up the entire piece.
“What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes? ”
As it turned out, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight was waiting for me. I grasped my hands tightly together, drying off the sweat.
Slowly I walked to the piano in the center of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys, which were waiting impatiently to be played. Slowly, I opened the music. Next, I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory keys.
As my fingers played across the keys, I was becoming more unsure of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my years of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practiced this piece so many times that I could play it backwards if requested.
Although at one point I accidentally played two keys instead of the intended one, I continued to move my fingers automatically.
My eyes burned holes into the pages in front of me.
There was no way that I was going to lose my concentration. To keep this to myself, I leaned forward and focused carefully on the music.
When I came to the end of the page, a warning went off inside my head: DON’T MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE!
Needless to say, I obeyed myself with all my heart and mind. And, proud of my “page-turning” feat, I finished the rest of the piece without making a single mistake.
After the final note died away, a celebration went into action inside my head. I had finished. I had mastered the impossible.
57.The author was nervous before the performance because _______.

B.the strong spotlight was shining onto the stage
C.she hadn’t mastered the entire piece

A.put into disorder B.forget about
C.stop halfway D.do well in
59.The author _________.
A.didn’t make any mistake in the performance
B.felt better at the beginning of the performance
C.paid all attention to nothing but her performance
D.lost her concentration sometimes during the performance
60. What did the author feel about her performance?
A.She thought it was comfortable and successful.
B.She thought it was very difficult but successful.
C.She thought she had never made a mistake during the performance.
D.She thought she played through the piece carefully but light-heartedly.

The Government should raise taxes on air travel and high-polluting cars in order to help the environment, an important committee of MPs has said. It also said that the 70 mph speed limit on motorways should be reduced or enforced to bring down the amount of carbon dioxide given off by cars The House of Common Enviromental Audit committee’s latest report said that transport was the only sector(部門)of the UK where carbon emissions have continued to rise since 1990.
It said it was time for the Government to make demand for cheap air impossible by raising air passenger tax. Emissions from air traffic have risen by 5 times as much since 1900 and are continuing to rise.
The committee welcomed the recent introduction of changed car tax, which means that the lowest-carbon cars pay no road tax, while gas-guzzling(耗油的)4×4s pay an increased rate of £210. However, the MPs say it doesn’t go far enough and are calling for a top limit of £1,800 with lower limit of £200.
Committee chairman Tim Yeo said : “Air travel in particular is the fastest growing source of CO2, with emissions more than five times since 1900. The Government should take much more decisive action to reduce the difference of income favor of trains, buses, and lower carbon cars and lorries.”
Friends of the Earth’s senior organizer Tony Bosworth said: “Emissions from transport are still rising and forecasts suggest they will carry on rising for years to come.”
“Tinkering(隨意或部分修補(bǔ))around the edges is no longer enough to deal with the greatest threat the world faces.” A spokesman for the Department for Transport said: “Dealing with carbon emissions in transport is a key problem.”
53.What is the purpose of Government’s raising taxes on air travel and high-polluting cars?
A.To reduce the number of the planes and cars
B.To make more money
C.To encourage people to travel by bus or by rail.
D.To help the environment.
54.The underlined word “emissions” in this passage probably means “ ”
A.having a bad effect B.producing or raising
