It was a painful 100 hours from the moment the earthquake struck until rescuers pulled Liu Deyun from the ruins of a factory yesterday. When he went to work on Monday morning, he had never thought that he would spend the next week in the ruins of his workplace. “It was a miracle(奇跡), but that happened through our hard work,” said Zhao Hongxing, an army doctor who joined in rescue. “His first words were ‘The army is great. ’”

Chinese troops may have been the ones to physically free Mr Liu, 50, but it was his daughter who didn't give up looking for her father that saved his life at last. On Thursday night, running around the fallen factory, the family search party headed by his daughter, heard a low cry. “Father! Father!” Mr Liu answered in a low voice “Yes”. Then, after more than three days buried under the fallen building, came two simple words: “I’m thirsty”. The reply was probably not what he was wanting: “Father don't talk! You need your air! I will go and find somebody to rescue you!”

The entire first floor of the building fell down, with the second floor completely damaged and pushing the building to one side. The 12-hour rescue operation to save Mr Liu was filled with danger. Mr Liu was freed yesterday at 6:28 p. m. His family had agreed to cut off one of his feet so that he could be pulled out. “I just want him to live,” his daughter Yuan, 23, said in tears.

Mr Liu, wrapped in a blanket, was welcomed by a large number of people who was concerned about him. And with the latest survivor taken to a waiting ambulance(急救車), the rescue workers went back to the ruins where two more factory workers were waiting for their turn to be dug out.

GOLDEN, British Columbia (AP)---A 3-year-old girl found alive in the upside down wreckage（殘�。﹐f an airplane survived because she was strapped in a car seat, rescuers said. They said they knew she was OK when she cried for her teddy bear.

Sunday's crash killed Kate Williams' pilot-grandfather, Allen D. Williams, 65, and another passenger, authorities said. The plane was found nose down and turned over in the icy water at the edge of a riverbank in the mountains of southeast British Columbia.

"What saved her life was being strapped into that car seat," said Mike Plonka, a member of the search-and-rescue team. "You could see that she was very frightened. Her big concern at the time was her little teddy bear. She didn't want to leave without it. . . ” "She was just pointing at it and calling it ‘Baby’. ” he said Monday. The girl suffered head injuries but was reported as stable, hospital officials in Golden said. She was reunited with her parents.

Police said the Cessna 172 was on its way to Edmonton when it took off from Golden around 1 pm Sunday into low clouds and snow. Visibility（能見度）was poor. An hour later, the Search and Rescue Centre in Victoria picked up the plane's emergency signal from somewhere near the Blaeberry River.

A team using a hand-held beacon locator（定位器）found the wreckage, and two military search and rescue technicians--Sgt. Scott Elliston and Master Cpl. Bruno Lapointe---landed nearby in a helicopter. As they checked for survivors, they discovered the girl alive but surrounded by debris（殘�。﹊n the back of the plane. The two soldiers tried to remove her from the wreckage, but she made it clear she didn't want to leave without her teddy bear.

"I got her out and I handed her to Bruno. She was calling out for her teddy bear. I picked up the teddy bear to give it to her but it was covered with snow. She wasn't too happy that it was covered with snow so I brushed it off. ＂Elliston said.

Williams was CEO and founder of Edmonton-based A. D. Williams Engineering Inc. The passenger who was killed, Steven T. Sutton, was chief financial officer. The two had been attending a business meeting in Golden. The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation,it will tell you the potential(潛力)of that nation.

Today in America,if you ask the high school students to list their heroes,their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars―the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent(天才）but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However,one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.

A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area-sports. However,too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a disorder. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.

A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However,the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people. Today,the rock star,the athlete,and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really,do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor,a teacher,or a scientist?These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However,they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.

What is really sad is that the young try to imitate(模仿) their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and  follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars,athletes and actors,the future does not look too bright.

     Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet．If I ask you“What is the most important in your life?”, maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet．”
     The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller． But they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said,“People can’t live without computers today．”
