This award winning image shows the extraordinary moment when a lemon shark stared into a lens(鏡頭)with an obvious cheeky grin(露齒的笑). Showing a close-up of a lemon shark’s face on the surface at sunset, it was recently selected from more than 20,000 photos as winner of the Oceans division of the international Nature’s Best Photography 2008 Windland Smith Rice Awards.

Amateur photographer Bruce Yates, snapped the named “Cheshire Cat Grin”(露齒笑的檸檬鯊) photograph in July last year in the Bahamas. 54-year-old Mr Yates, from Seattle, said, “My wife and I were on a boat trip to see and dive with sharks in the northwest part of the Bahamas, in an expansive area many miles from land with relatively shallow water.”

“The shark was roughly eight feet long and only a few inches from my camera.” describes Bruce, “However, I was not actually in the water for that photo ― it was taken when I was sitting on the boat, holding my camera partly in water. Dozens of lemon sharks were around the boat competing for small bits of fish. The sunset is visible in the background.”

“Although this particular photo makes it look like the shark is smiling, it is really just closing its mouth after trying to grab a bit of fish. It is an expression that I have never seen on a shark before, and I doubt whether I could get that shot again if I tried for the rest of my life.”

The lemon shark inhabits inshore waters from around America, Brazil, the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and other areas in the Atlantic. Despite their large teeth, they represent a small threat to humans with only 10 causeless attacks recorded and no deaths.

Bruce, who owns an investment management firm, first got into photography 15 years ago when he undertook a scuba diving course, and his passion for nature photography has led him to many remote parts of the world, from the Arctic Circle to the coral reefs of Indonesia.

A new computer treatment is being used to deal with obesity in children. Connected to a small dining set, consisting of scales and a plate, a mini computer teaches children how to eat and reminds them when to stop.

“In very fat people, hunger signals from the stomach to the brain stop functioning. But the new computer system teaches the children how to receive these messages again,” says Dr Julian Hamilton Shield, the Bristol University senior lecturer leading the treatment trials.

The computer, called a Mandomerter, records and stores the weight loss from the plate when children eat. As the food is leaving the plate, a curve (曲線圖) is produced on the computer screen suggesting whether the child is eating too quickly.

“Children with weight problems often eat too quickly. We want them to eat steadily and slowly and the system teaches them to slow down. It is a bit like retraining,” says Hamilton Shield.

Obesity now represents one of the major threats to the future health of children. About one in five boys and one in four girls aged two to fifteen in England are overweight. But so far no treatments have proven effective in treating children.

The Mandometer was developed in Sweden, but at present is experiencing further development at the University of Bristol, with$224,400 in funds from BUPA-a global health and care organization. The system could be on the market in two years. At first, it would be managed by medical clinics.

D. The Mandometer records and stores the weight loss of children when they eat.

61. Obesity threatens the health of children, which ________.

A. has been solved by a computer

B. is nothing compared with other diseases

C. is very serious

D. has led to many deaths

62. What can we learn from the text?

A. The Mandometer will be put into market once it proves effective.

B. The Mandometer is cheap enough for every family to afford.

C. The Mandometer is still not perfect.

D. Slow eating is sure to make people lose weight.

Apply to an American College

Earlier, we explained how to begin a search for schools by going to one of the American educational advising centers around the world. We also discussed the rules for entering the United States. And we talked about programs that can be completed online.

But if your goal is to come to the United States to study, then it is time to make a list of colleges or universities that interest you. Be sure to choose more than one. Directors of foreign student admissions say students should apply to at least three schools.

Some students want to attend a small college. Others want to go to a big university. If a really big university appeals to you, then there are ones like Ohio State. That university in Columbus, Ohio, in the Midwest, has almost fifty-two thousand students. There are students this year from around one hundred fifty countries.

Ohio State provides international students with an application on its Website. You can pay the application charge online with a credit card. Or you can print the forms and mail them with the payment.

Many colleges and universities have their applications and also their catalogs online. You should start on your applications at least two years before you want to begin studies.

Completing a college application can take some time. But answering all the questions is not enough. Another important step is taking admissions tests. The SAT is the college entry test that American high school students most commonly take.

Colleges and universities also require international students to take the TOEFL ― the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
