Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast．Diagnosed with diabetes（糖尿�。�, Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin（胰島素） three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness and even death．And if that weren't bad enough, he had no health insurance．

       After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back．He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar．com, a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources．

    Jason Swencki’s son, Kody, was diagnosed with diabetes at six．Father and son visit the online children's forums（論壇） together most evenings．"Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over," says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers．"They know what he's going through, so he doesn't feel alone．"

       Kody is anything but alone, Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases．And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages．

These days, Thomas's main focus is his charity（慈善機構）, Fight It, which provides medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can't afford a diabetic's huge expenses．Fight-it．org has raised about $23,000—in products and in cash．In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean．

Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables．"Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure," says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar's original members．"But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now．"

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions--and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why．

       Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly （均勻的） across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes．

       "We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said．"Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect （忽略） the mouth．"

       According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed．As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations．

       The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of．expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral．They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies．

       It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did．"The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said．"Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less．"

       In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion．From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion．Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation．
