Head above Water

TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean ,has asked for help as it will be swallowed up by the sea.

Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu’s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level. Salt water is already entering the country’s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable .Without urgent help ,the country’s days are numbered .

But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea .Venice ,a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24cm over the past 100 years .Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50cm by 2050. A century ago ,St .Mark’s Square, the lowest point city ,flooded about nine times a year .Nowadays ,it happens more than 100 times .While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands ,global warming causes Tuvalu’s rising sea level.

The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century; scientists expect it rise by extra 1—3 degrees over the next 100 years.

Warmer weather makes glaciers melt ,adding more water to the ocean .The warmer temperatures also make water expand ,so it takes up more space ,causing the sea level to rise .The sea level has risen about 10—25 cm in the last 100 years .

The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal , oil and gas ,people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere ,such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect ,making the planet even warmer.

Many scientists believe that ,if the warming is not stopped ,there will be huge climate changes .The sea level could rise by one meter this century.

Should this come true ,the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with “climate refugees” looking for somewhere to love ?

MySpace, the social networking website, is different from other websites which only provide stories about other people. MySpace is a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like. Started two years ago, it is a big source of information for and about American kids.

Teenagers and their parents feel very differently about it. Teens are rushing to join the site, not sharing their parents’ worries. It signals yet another generation gap in the digital era.

For teenagers, it is a reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They will often list their surnames, birthdays, after-school jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other personal information.

“MySpace is an easy way to reach just about everyone. I don't have all the phone numbers of my acquaintances. But if I want to get in touch with one of them, I could just leave them a message on MySpace,” said Abby Van Wassen. She is a 16-year-old student at Woodland Hills High of Pittsburg, PennsylvaniA.

Parents on the other hand are seriously concerned about the security problems of MySpace.

Break Your Bad Mood

Having one of those days or weeks – when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster – often within a day or two.

Walk it off

Exercise is the most popular bad-mood buster. A person who’s in a bad mood is in his low energy and high tension. Taking a fast ten-minute walk, or doing some quick exercise can do wonders towards changing that bad mood.

Tune it out

Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tension go away quickly, because music starts associations with past positive experiences we’ve had

Give yourself a pep talk

Stop and listen to what’s on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper the pessimistic messages you’ve been giving yourself and then give optimistic answers. (“I still don’t have a job.” Vs “I have two interviews next week.”)

Reduce your stress

Relaxation techniques are wonderful mood-lifters. These include deep breathing, stretching and visualizing(想像), all of which sound complicated but aren’t. One easy way to visualize: close your eyes and picture a favorite place, such as the beach. Another simple way to be against distress(痛苦)is to make a to-do list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas, you realize you’re not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.

Avoid things that won’t improve your mood.

TV may not help much: You need to increase your energy level and stimulate your mind – something that TV show “Neighbors” won’t do. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how mood and food are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods. A better choice? Research shows that carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(意大利面食),produce a calming effect on people who have a desire for them.

1.We learn from the text that it might help rid us of a bad mood          .

A.to do nothing about it                B.to take a long walk on the beach

C.to do some exercise with light music       D.to talk about it to neighbors

2.Why is it suggested that you close your eyes and picture the beach?

A.It is not complicated to do so.

B.It is an area which can be easily controlled.

C.It helps beat a bad mood.

D.It brings us a new technique.

3.TV may not improve your mood because         .

A.it sometimes shows what happens around you

B.it keeps you sitting without moving

C.it reminds you of eating and drinking

D.it produces a calming effect.

4.This text most probably appears in         .

A.a(chǎn) book on physical exercises                 B.a(chǎn) doctor’s handbook

       C.a(chǎn) notice                                              D.a(chǎn) magazine

5.In the second paragraph, “buster” means “         ”.

       A.breaker        B.helper     C.maker          D.partner
