My first performance in front of an audience was coming up soon.
I tried as hard as I could to remain clam, but my heart was racing. I stared down at my sweat-covered shaking hands.
I looked up again at the audience, realizing that these were real people. They were not just my mum and dad,who would say,“Good job!”even if I messed up the entire piece.
What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes?
As it turned, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight was waiting for me. I grasped my hands tightly together, drying off the sweat.
Slowly I walked to the piano in the center of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys, which were waiting impatiently to be played. Slowly, I opened the music. Next,I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory keys.
As my fingers played across the keys,I was becoming more unsure of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my year of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practiced this piece times that I could play it backwards if requested.
Although at one point I accidentally played two keys instead of the intended one,I continued to move my fingers automatically.
My eyes burned holes into the page in front of me.
There was no way that 1 was going to lose my concentration. To keep this promise to myself,I leaned forward and focused carefully on the music.
When I came to the end of the page,a warning went off inside my head:DON’T MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE!
Needless to say,I obeyed myself with all my mind. And,proud of my“page-turning”feat, I finished the rest of the piece without making a single mistake.
After the final note died away,a celebration went into action inside my head. I had finished. I had mastered the impossible.

Traveling can be a way to gain life experiences, especially during Spring Break — a week long school vacation in the United States. But what if you’re a student and don’t have enough money for a trip? Don’t worry. Here are some useful suggestions.
●Save: This probably is the most important preparation for traveling. Cut expenses to fatten your wallet so you’ll have more choices about where to go and how to get there.
●Plan ahead: Don’t wait until the last minute to plan your trip. Tickets may cost more when bought on short notice. Giving yourself several months to get ready can mean security(安全) and savings.
●Do your homework: No matter where you go, research the places you will visit. Decide what to see. Travel books will provide information on the cheapest hotels and restaurants.
●Plan sensibly: Write down what you expect to spend for food and hotels. Stick to your plan or you may not have enough money to cover everything.
●Travel in groups: Find someone who is interested in visiting the same places. By traveling with others you can share costs and experiences.
●Work as you go: Need more money to support your trip? Look for work in the places you visit.
●Go off the beaten path: Tourist cities may be expensive. You may want to rethink your trip and go to a lesser-known area. Smaller towns can have many interesting activities and sights.
●Pack necessary things: The most important things to take are not always clothes: Remember medicine in case you get sick and snacks in case you cannot find a cheap restaurant.
●Use the Internet: The Net can help to save money. Some useful websites include www. Travelocity. com, www. bargains-lowest fare. com and www. Economic travel. com.
By planning sensibly, even students can enjoy the travel. Your travel experiences will be remembered for a lifetime.

Among various programmes, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey show.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The topics on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people's lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life's tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18-to 21year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show's exploitation.
1.Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows are____.
A.more interesting B.unusually poplar C.more detailed D.more formal
2.Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows ______.
A.remain interested in them B.are ready to face up to them
C.remain cold to them D.are willing to get away from them
3.Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A.A new type of robot. B.National hatred.
C.Family income planning. D.Street accident.
4.We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows ____.
A.have become the only ones of its kind B.exploit the weaknesses in human nature
C.appear at different times of the day D.attract different people

China’s economic growth “hard to predict”
The worsening global economic situation makes it difficult for China to predict its growth for next year, a senior official said on Friday.
"How fast China's economy will grow next year is uncertain," Liu He, deputy director of the Office of the Central Leading Group on Finance and Economy Work, told China Daily.
"To a large extent, the rate will be decided by the external(外部的) situation," Liu said during a discussion with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and other economists in Beijing.
This year, GDP is estimated to grow at 9.4 or 9.5 percent, down from 10.6 percent last year, he said. However, the impact of the current financial turbulence (動蕩)"on our economy is much less than on the rest of the world", he said.
Nicholas Stern, a former UK government advisor, also told China Daily it will take at least one or two years for the world to recover from the recession(經濟衰退), which is now spreading from the US and the UK to the rest of the world.
"We don't know how long the recession will last, but it is unlikely to be short," he said.
Liu said China can use the downturn as an opportunity to restructure its economy, which has relied heavily on government investment, foreign trade and low-cost technology over the past years.
"When the economy is experiencing fast growth, companies are unwilling to upgrade their technologies," Liu said.
"The slowdown gives such firms the opportunity to enhance(提高) their competitive edge through better technologies."

A.only 2 B.no more than 3 C.not more than 4 D.at least 5

A.more B.less C.the most D.the least
3.The underlined word “extent” probably means .

4.According to the passage, the reason why Liu said this recession is an opportunity for China to restructure its economy is that .
A.China’s economy will not depend on government investment in t he future
B.foreign trade will grow in the future
C.the recession will force China’s companies to upgrade their technologies
D.low-cost technologies will not exist in China
