I have just listened to the same “l(fā)ecture” given by my grandmother. And now I’m beginning to think whether she is right when she complains,  1  she frequently does, that children nowadays aren’t as well-behaved as they  2  to be. She describes in detail how she used to be told to  3  her elders and betters. She was taught to speak when she was spoken to, and when she went out  4  her own, she was  5  to say “please” and “thank you”. Children in her days, she 6 , were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are  7  if you ever hear parents telling their children to  8  their manners.(禮節(jié))

If you give her the  9 , she then takes out of her writing desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she is never  10  of displaying(展示). Of course when you look  11  pictures of her parents you feel  12 that, with a father as strict-looking as that, you too would have been “seen and not heard”.  13  him sits his wife, with their children around her—Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff (僵硬的), black clothes were so  14  to a little girl that she had not enough breath left to be talkative, not to mention mischievous (淘氣的).  15 must have been a dull and lonely life too,16  she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while the brothers were  17 from an early age.

However, my childhood was much  18  than Granny’s. I went to school with my brother, I played football with him and his friends. We  19  spoke a common language, and we got up to the same mischief (淘氣的人). I would have died if I had had to  20  indoors, wearing tight, stiff clothes.

One of Britain’s bravest women told yesterday how she helped to catch suspected (可疑的) police killer David Bieber — and was thanked with flowers by the police. It was also said that she could be in line for a share of up to £30,000 reward money.

Vicki Brown, 30, played a very important role in ending the nationwide manhunt. Vicki became suspicious (懷疑) of the guest who checked in at 3 pm the day before New Year’s Eve with little luggage and wearing sunglasses and a hat pulled down over his face. She said: “He didn’t seem to want to talk too much and make any eye contact (接觸).” Vicki, the only employee on duty, called her bosses Margaret, 64, and husband Stan McKale, 65, who phoned the police at 11 pm.

Officers from Northumbria Police called Vicki at the hotel in Dunston, Gateshead, at about 11:30 pm to make sure that this was the wanted man. Then they kept in touch by phoning Vicki every 15 minutes.

“It was about ten past two in the morning when the phone went again and a policeman said  ‘Would you go and make yourself known to the armed officers outside?’ My heart missed a beat.”

Vicki quietly showed eight armed officers through passages and staircases to the top floor room and handed over the key.

“I realized that my bedroom window overlooks that part of the hotel, so I went to watch. I could not see into the man’s room, but I could see the passage. The police kept shouting at the man to come out with his hands showing. Then suddenly he must have come out because they shouted for him to lie down while he was handcuffed (帶上手銬)!

4. David Bieber was most probably handcuffed in ______.

A. the passage   B. the man’s room      C. Vicki’s bedroom   D. the top floor room

There are little cars that may some day take the place of today’s automobiles(汽車). If everyone drives such a little car in the future, there will be less pollution in the air, there will be more parking space in cities, and the streets will be less crowded. The space now for one car of the usual size can hold at least three such little cars.

The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive.  Driving will be safer, too, as these little cars can go only 65 kilometers an hour.

The cars of the future will be fine for going around the city. But they will not be useful for going far away.  If the car is powered by electricity , it will have two batteries (電池)--one battery for the motor and the other for the horn(喇叭), signals(信號(hào)燈), etc. Little cars which are powered by gas will go 45 kilometers before needing to stop for more gas.

If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets of roads will be needed to set up in the future. Some roads will be used for the big,  fast cars, and other roads will be needed for the small, slower ones.

1. What’s the advantage(優(yōu)勢(shì))of the small cars?

A. There won’t be so much pollution and the small cars won’t be so expensive as the big ones.

B. It will be safer to drive these small cars.

C. There will be more space for cars to park.

D. All of the above.

2. Two sets of roads are necessary in the future in order to ______ .

A. prevent car accidents                     B. make the city more beautiful

C. let small cars run fast                     D. limit the speed of the cars

3. The best title for this passage should be ________.

A. Big Cars and Small Cars                       B. How to Drive Small Cars

C. Cars for Tomorrow                                 D. Cars for Everyone

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.

So, you have to give a speech—and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank Goodness, it’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”

Cheep up! It doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly. Never forget your audience. Don’t talk over their heads, and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.

If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet? Give it a try and see what happens.
