All these twelve men are 5 now and drained(耗盡) by time and success of energy and ambition. Many have 6 their whole lives here. Going home for Christmas is a tradition of the holiday season. No matter where you may be the rest of the years, being at “home” with your family and friends for Christmas is a “must”. The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are the busiest times of the year at airports, train stations and bus stations. It seems that all America is on the move and Americans are on their way to spend the holidays with their loved ones.
This means that the house will be full of cousins, aunts and uncles that might not see each other during the year. Everyone joins in to help in the preparation of the festival. Some family members get to choose a Christmas tree to buy and bring home. Others decorate the house on wrap presents. And of course, each household needs to make lots of food!
At Christmas Eve gatherings adults have eggnog, which is made of cream, milk, sugar beaten eggs and brandy. Plenty of eggnog or hot cocoa is on hand in colder climates for carolers, or people who go from house to house sing Christmas carols to their neighbors.
Long ago, each child hung a stocking, or sock, over the fireplace. Santa entered down the chimney and left candy and presents inside the socks for the children. Today the tradition is carried on, but the socks are now large red sock-shaped fabric bags still called stockings. Each child can’t wait to open his or her eyes to see what Santa has left in the stocking.
Giving gifts is a Christmas tradition. However, in recent years, more and more people have complained that Christmas is too commercialized(商業(yè)化) especially in large cities. Store owners begin advertising and decorating very early in hopes of selling more goods. Some people believe that the origin of Christmas has been lost.

A.giving gifts is a Christmas tradition
B.giving gifts is getting more and more commercialized
C.store owners hope to get more presents
D.people think there will be no Christmas in the future
5.Why does the writer say “all Americans are on the move” in the passage?
A.Americans like to travel on Christmas.
B.Because American has a lot of earthquakes on every Christmas.
C.Because Americans don’t go sleep on Christmas Eve.

Climate change, pollution, overuse of water and development are killing some of the world’s most famous rivers including China’s Yangtze. India’s Ganges and Africa’s Nile. WWF said on Tuesday. At the global launch of its report “World’s Top 10 Rivers at Risk”, the group said many rivers could dry out, affecting hundreds of millions of people and killing unique aquatic (水生的) life.
“If these rivers die, millions will lose their livelihoods,biodiversity(生物多樣性) will be destroyed on a massive scale, there will be less fresh water and agriculture, resulting in less food security,” said. Rayi Singh, secretary—general of WWF—India. The report launched ahead of “World Water Day today, also cited the Rio Grande in the United States, the Mekong in Asia, Europe’s Danube, La Plata in South America and Australia’s Murray—Darling as in need of greater protection.
Rivers are the world’s main source of fresh water and WWF says about half of the available supply is already being used up. Dams have destroyed habitats and cut rivers off from their flood plains. While climate change could affect the seasonal water flows that feed them, the report said. Fish populations, the top source of protein and overall life support for hundreds of thousands of communities worldwide, are also being threatened. The Yangtze basin is one of the most polluted rivers in the world because of decades of heavy industrialization, damming and huge influxes(流入)of sediment(積淀) from land conversion.

With the National College Entrance Examination drawing closer, Senior 3 students will do almost anything to ensure success – even change what they eat. More than 70 percent of high – scoring students in last year’s exam admitted taking “brain food”, according to a survey conducted by the Shanghai Hercules Teens Research Center last August. However, only 30 percent of them said they would do this again.
Experts say that, as long as they eat properly, teens will have no problem getting enough nutrition from their daily food.
So what should you be eating? A good start is to eat foods that give you a variety of nutrients. For each meal, choose several kinds of food from each of these groups:
* Vegetables;
* Fruits;
* Bread, cereals, noodles and rice;
* Milk, yogurt and cheese;
* Meat, poultry, fish, fried beans and peas, eggs and nuts.
You can eat healthily without giving up your favorite foods, but you should limit the fat you eat to keep your cholesterol (膽固醇) low. Only animal fat provides cholesterol, which is known to cause heart problems. Most people like the taste of table sugar, so there are sweeteners “hidden” in many foods like soft drinks, cookies, and so on.
If you have high – energy needs, sweets can be a useful source of calories but they contain limited nutrients and can cause tooth decay (腐壞).
When eating out, look for boiled or baked rather than fried foods. And try eating milk – based high–calcium (鈣) foods instead of creamy items to reduce the fat and calories you take in. The teenage body changes quickly, so your attitude towards nutrition now can make a big difference to your health in years to come.
1.Many Senior 3 students take “brain food” .
A.to deal with heavy workloads
B.to perform better in college entrance exam
C.to have enough food and water
D.to improve their health
2.What is eating properly, according to experts?
A.Keeping away from animal fat.
B.Having a balanced diet.
C.Eating foods that supply high energy.
D.Choosing vegetables and fruits only.
3.Which of the following statements about sweeteners is wrong?
A.They can be found in soft drinks and cookies.
B.They contain limited nutrients.
C.Eating too many of them may hurt your teeth.
D.Sweetener is another way of saying table sugar.
4.What is important to your health, according to the last paragraph?
A.Limiting the amount you eat of sweets.
B.Not believing in “brain food” blindly.
C.Having a correct understanding of nutrition.
D.Paying attention to foods in your body.
