A lesson in caring
It was a cold evening and my daughter and I were walking up Broadway. I didn’t notice a guy sitting inside cardboard box. But Nora did. She wasn’t even four, but she 1 at my coat and said, “That man’s cold, Daddy. 2 we take him home?”
I don’t remember my reply. But I do remember a sudden 3 feeling inside me. I had always been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her 4 , whether it was birds 5 flight or children playing. But now she was noticing 6 and beggary.
A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who picked up a food package from a nearby school on a Sunday morning and 7 it to an elderly person. It was quick and easy .I 8 us up. Nora was 9 about it .She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how 10 our job was. When Sunday came, she was ready, but I had to 11 myself to leave the house. On the way to the school, I fought an urge(強(qiáng)烈愿望) to turn 12 .The Sunday paper and coffee were waiting at home. Why do this? 13, we phoned the elderly person we’d been appointed. She 14 us right over.
The building was in a sad state. Facing us was a silver-haired woman in an old dress. She took the package and asked us to come in. Nora ran inside. I unwillingly followed. 15 inside, I saw the apartment belonged to someone poor. Our hostess showed us some photos. Nora played and when it came time to say good-bye, we three hugged(擁抱). I walked home in tears.
Professionals call such a(n) 16 a “volunteer opportunity.” They are opportunities, I’ve come to see. Where else but as volunteers do you have the opportunity to do something 17 that’s good for others as well as for yourself? Nora and I regularly serve meals to needy people and 18clothes for the homeless. Yet, as I’ve 19her grow over these past four years, I still wonder—which of us has 20 more?

Anita’s New Start
Even though it was a beautiful spring day, Anita felt sad as she walked along the beach after school. Her family had moved to the USA three weeks earlier for her father’s new job. Anita missed her old home in Mexico. She wanted to eat her grandmother’s bread and play with her cousin.
Anita thought about her new life in Texas. She thought she would never learn this new language—everyone spoke so fast. How could she make new friends if she couldn’t even talk to people? “I’m too shy to make new friends anyway,” she thought, feeling disheartened. Anita decided to try something her mother had taught her. Her mother had said, “Anita, whenever you’re sad, take a few deep breaths and think about something that makes you happy.” Then Anita took a deep breath.
Suddenly a seagull(海鷗) called overhead. She remembered that she had saved some biscuits from lunch. She quickly threw a biscuit into the air. As the gull caught the biscuit in its mouth, she laughed. Just then, another gull landed near her and stood frozen. Anita noticed its wing was injured. She wanted to help, but didn’t know what to do.
At that moment Anita saw a man and a group of children in the distance. She recognized the man as Mr. Turner, a teacher at her school. He was pointing to something and all the children in the science club were listening to him. Anita decided that this was no time to be shy. She began walking toward the group. Anita took a deep breath. “Hello,” she said quietly. When Mr. Turner looked up, she pointed toward the gull and begged, “Come, please!” “Hello, Anita. What’s wrong?” Anita pointed again toward the bird. Mr. Turner gestured to the group. “Come on, everyone, Let’s see what Anita has found.” As the group followed Anita, she noticed a girl from her class. Anita smiled at the girl and spoke carefully, “What is your name?”
