Leeds, England—A Leeds University professor is teaching a course to help dozens of people to forgive their enemies.

“The hate we hold within us is a cancer,” Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure (血壓)and heart disease.

More than 70 people have become members in Hart’s first 20-week workshop in London. The course, he says, is the first of its kind in the world.

These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realized their hate is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian-born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every two weeks.

The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people. “People have lots of negative attitudes toward forgiveness,” he said, “forgiveness is not forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one.”

Hart explained that the main idea of their training is to give us guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect us, and how to change our attitudes towards the person you are angry with,” said Norman Claringbul, a senior expert on the project.

Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people want to “get free of the past”.

1.What does Hart mean by comparing “hate” to “a cancer”?

A.Hate may lead to a cancer.

B.Hate is a feeling that is hard to get over.

C.Hate will grow with time passing.

A.high blood pressure and heart disease are caused by hate

B.high blood pressure can only be cured by the professors

C.without hate, people will have less chance to develop high blood pressure and heart disease

D.people who suffer from high blood pressure and heart disease must have many enemies

3.According to Professaor Hart, if you are angry with somebody, it is better __________.

A.to try your best to defeat him or her

B.never to meet him or her again

C.to think of the matter in a different way

D.not to think of him or her any more

4.In Hart’s 20-week workshop, people there can __________.

     A.talk with those they hate

B.learn to get rid of their anger

Put yourself in these tourists’ position. You are walking on an icy mountain path in the Alps in Europe. Suddenly you discovered a body on the ground, face downward and stuck to the ice. You think someone may have been murdered or in a fatal accident. So you rush back and call the police. The police, however, quickly realize that this body is different from others they’ve found on the mountain. For one thing, it is mostly undamaged. For another, its skin is dried out, like a mummy’s. And with it is a knife with a small stone knife.

The body turned out to be much older than the tourists could have guessed. When scientists had a chance to examine it, they discovered it had been there for about five thousand years!

How could a body stay undamaged for all this time? Two things probably helped. First, the place where the man died was somewhat sheltered, so animals couldn’t get at it. Then he was quickly covered by falling snow. Wind blowing through the snow probably “freeze-dried” his body, removing all moisture from it.

Objects found with the body told something about the Iceman’s life. He wore a well-made fur jacket and trousers. He clearly had been hunting, for he carried arrows, and animal bones were nearby. He also had a grass cushion for sitting or sleeping on. Perhaps he was exhausted when he lay down for the last time.

The body was found in 1991, when some of the ice on the mountain melted. Searching for the cause of the Iceman’s death, scientists put the body back into cold conditions — and hoped they were able to work out the mystery.

1.The best title for this passage might be __________.

A.What Life Was Like Five Thousand Years Ago

     B.The Frightened Tourists

     D.The Mystery of the Alps

2.The time of the year that the Iceman died was probably ____________.

     A.early fall            B.late spring         C.summer            D.winter

3.In this passage the word “moisture” means ___________.

     A.skin B.nutrition    C.water       D.heat

Dear Carol,

I wear braces (牙箍) and I know I look just terrible in them. Is there anything I can do to improve my appearance until they come off?

                                                       Connie N.

Philadelphia, PA

Dear Connie,

Start by thinking about how good you are going to look when your braces come off. If you are negative about your appearance, people will pick that up right away about you. In the meantime there are several things that you can do to lift your spirits:

l         Change your hairstyle. Be sure to get a good cut so that the shape of your hair will make your face prettier and also good for your type of hair (fine, thick, straight, curly, etc.) Choose a hairstyle that draws attention away from your face. Hair pulled back into a pony-tail or into a ball on top or slightly off-center can be attractive and practical for this purpose.

l         Keep skin clean. If you choose to wear makeup, it should look natural. Blusher(腮紅) and lipstick in light color of peach or pink are best.

l         Be well-groomed(梳洗整潔的). Neatness really counts. People see a total look about you before they ever become aware of your braces. And first impressions are lasting ones!

                    Carol

1.Why did Connie write to Carol?

A.Because she really care about her clothes.

B.Because she cared much about her appearance.

A.change your hairstyle and you will look beautiful

B.keep your skin clean and you will look good

To find out what the weather is going to be, most people go straight to the radio, television, or newspaper to get an expert weather forecast. But if you know what to look for, you can use your own senses to make weather predictions.

There are many signs that can help you. For example, in fine weather the air pressure is generally high, the air is still and often full of dust, and faraway objects may look unclear. But when a storm is stirring up, the pressure drops and you are often able to see things more clearly. Sailors took note of this long ago and came up with a saying: “The farther the sight, the nearer the rain.”

Your sense of smell can also help you discover weather changes. Just before it rains, odors(氣味) become stronger. This is because odors are repressed (抑制) in a fair, high-pressure center. When a bad weather is coming, air pressure lessens and odors are set free.

You can also hear an coming storm. Sounds bounce(彈回) off heavy storm clouds and return to earth with increased force. An old saying describes it this way: “Sound traveling far and wide, a stormy day will betide.”

And don’t feel funny if your grandmother says she can feel a storm coming. It is commonly known that many people feel pains in their bones when the humidity(濕度) rises, the pressure drops, and bad weather is on the way.

1.he topic of this passage is ___________.

     A.expert weather prediction

     B.seeing coming storms

     C.old sayings about weather

D.using the senses to discover weather changes

2.According to the passage, as a storm approaches, faraway objects look ___________.

A.unclear because of dust in the air

B.clearer because air pressure is high

C.clearer because air pressure is dropping

     D.dark because of cloud storms

3.In the last paragraph, the writer implies that ___________.

A.the idea of feeling a coming storm is foolish

B.older people know a lot about weather

C.it’s impossible that people feel aches when a storm is coming

D.it’s definitely true that some people can feel coming weather changes

4.The writer quotes the old saying “The farther the sight, the nearer the rain” in order to ___________.

A.show how foolish and untrue such sayings were

B.show that this observation, made long ago, is true

C.make the reader believe that expert predictions are not reliable

D.explain why you can’t see clearly when the rain is coming
