There are three separate sources of danger in supplying energy by nuclear power (原子能).

First, the radioactive material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.

Second, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years.  It is impossible to make these wastes nonradioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.

Third, there may occur the danger of a leak (泄漏) or an explosion at file power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear program. However, it can happen.

Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster (災(zāi)難) is extremely high.

1. Which of the following is FALSE?

A. It is possible that a leak 'or an explosion occurs at a power station.

B. It is unusual for radioactive materials to be transported across land.

C. The containers are likely to be broken by an earthquake.

D. Nuclear wastes remain dangerous in most cases for many years.

2. The author thinks that the ways to store nuclear wastes are

A. easy                    B. impossible              C.reasonable        D. ineffective

3. What do we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The power station is a safe place.

B. The dangers of nuclear energy can be prevented.

C. The general public are strongly against the nuclear program.

D. By itself, none of the three dangers is very likely to cause much worry.

4. What is this passage about?

A. Uses of nuclear power.

B. Dangers from nuclear power.

C. Public anger at nuclear power.

D. Accidents caused by nuclear power.

Treasure hunts(尋寶)have excited people's imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues(線索)found in a book when he wrote a children's story, Masquerade, in 1979.The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of "red herrings", or false clues, to mislead them.

Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic(邏輯), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: "One of Six to Eight "under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII's six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.

Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue,  and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth £3000in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.

If you’re like most students, you probably read both at home and outside your home :perhaps somewhere on your schoolyard and maybe even at work during your breaks. Your reading environment can have a great effect on your understanding, so give some thought to how you can create(營造)or choose the right reading environments. The right environment allows you to stay alert(專注的) and to keep all of your attention on the text, especially when it is both interesting and difficult.

When you’re at home, you can usually create effective conditions for reading. You might

want to choose a particular place—a desk or table, for example—where you always read.Make sure the place you choose is well lighted, and sit in a chair that requires  you to sit straight.Reading in a chair that’s too soft and comfortable is likely to make you sleepy!Keep your active reading tools(pens, markers, notebooks or paper) and a dictionary close at hand.

Before you sit down for a reading period, try to reduce all possible interruptions.Turn off

your phone, the television, and the radio,Tell your family members or roommates that you’ll be busy for a while. If necessary, put a“Do not disturb”sign on your door! The more interruptions you must deal with while you read, the harder it will be to keep your attention on the task at hand.
