For the first time, scientists have recently linked global warming to powerful hurricanes like Katrina, more severe and longer droughts, less snow in many areas, stronger winds, and (at least in northern part of the earth) heavier rain. According to the current rate of giving off CO2, the earth will warm another 4°to 7°vs. the total 1°temperature increase in the last century.
There are some changes we can make in our daily lives – beginning now – to help address the climate crisis.
What We Can Do
1. Buy organic to support sustainable farming, which uses less fossil fuels than traditional farming and also helps to prevent soil becoming poorer and poorer. Not only are the pesticides (殺蟲劑) in traditional foods risky for consumers and the environment, but producing and shipping pesticides also use more fossil fuels.
2. Eat more organic plant foods, which require less energy to produce than animal foods. Plant farming also uses less water, and creates less pollution in our rivers and ecosystems. Organic corn and soybean yields are higher than traditional yields in drought situations. For example, traditional soybean production is 20 percent less efficient than organic soybean.
3. Replace standard light bulbs with CF bulbs. Every replaced bulb cuts nearly 1,300 pounds of greenhouse gas. A CF bulb uses only about one-fourth the energy of an incandescent bulb (白熾燈泡)。Australia’s government announced recently that it plans to ban incandescent bulbs within three years. If you’re using a traditional 60-watt bulb, try replacing it with a 15-watt CF bulb.
4. Recycle and reuse aluminum, glass, metal, paper, and plastic to save energy.
47. The underlined word “address” in Paragraph 2 probably means “__________”.
A. place emphasis on B. be aware of
C. deal with D. discuss about
48. We learn from the passage that sustainable farming __________.
A. does not use fossil fuels at all B. can keep soil in good condition
C. leaves fewer pesticides on crops D. costs less than traditional farming
49. Why does the author suggest having more organic plant foods?
A. They are free of pollution. B. They are more efficient to produce.
C. They are safe to eat. D. They are richer in nutrition.
50. We can infer from the passage that a 30-watt CF bulb works as well as traditional __________.
A. 45-watt bulb B. 60-watt bulb C. 100-watt bulb D. 120-watt bulb

A few years ago, a pilot had to have perfect eyesight and a college degree if he or she wanted to land a job with an American airline. But today, airlines have waived(宣布放棄) those requirements because they can’t find enough qualified pilots.
Airlines must hire up to 6200 new pilots in the next decade. But qualified pilots are few and far between in the United States. Every year there are more planes being flown. At the same time, 12 to 15 foreign countries are recruiting (招聘)American pilots.
As a result, pilots are earning spectacular salaries. The going rate for skilled pilots is well over $ 90,000 a year. Some pilots can earn about $ 160,000 plus free housing working for foreign airlines.
Because of the shortage, some people say unqualified pilots are being allowed to fly planes. They fear the number of crashed will skyrocket. Each year, more and more pilots with less than 2,000 hours of experience are being hired. Airlines are also bringing on board many more pilots who are older than 50, although law requires pilots to retire at age 60.
Being an airline pilot is a difficult job that requires people to make life and death decisions under pressure. Some pilots crack under the pressure.
The military is also having a hard time keeping pilots. Air Force pilots must commit to spending at least six years in the Air Force. The Air force invests millions of dollars to train each pilot, so it doesn’t want to lose them.
Experts say this problem is going to get a lot worse. Congress may establish a commission to study the country’s pilot needs. In the meantime, salaries of pilots will continue to rise and the number of crashes may keep pace.
49. The main idea of the article is ____________
a shortage of pilots is caused by airlines and the military.
there have been more crashes because pilots have worse eyesight and higher salaries
a shortage of pilots may lead to more crashes
airlines should hire more pilots even if they’re unqualified.
50. Today a pilot no longer needs __________
perfect eyesight
military training
two college degrees
to be recruited
51. Most pilots earn ___________
less than $ 90,000
more than $ 90,000
about $ 160,000 or free housing
about $ 160,000 and free housing
52. Air Force pilots should stay in the Air Force because ___________
the Air Force is a good place to work
the Air Force pays more than airlines
the military should have a hard time keeping pilots
the Air Force spends a lot of money training them

Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.
Sounds unusual, doesn't it? But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high—speed railway system. And that’s not all.China has an even greater high—speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.
China is negotiating to extend its own high·-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.
China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with
Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia.Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe.w_w w. k#s5_u.c o*m
If China’s plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beijing in under two days.
The new system would still follow China’s high—speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.
China’s bullet train(高速客車),the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the
World’s fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.
Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(軌距),maintenance of railway tracks. So,it’s important to pay attention to every detail.
But the key issue is really money.China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on
domestic railway expansion.
China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital
investment.Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development.
It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on,not to mention the better communication among those countries.
For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west.We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all.And they’ll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.
53.China’s new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because .
A.China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regions
B.China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways
C.China will develop its railway system and communication with other countries
D. the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism
54.According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is .
A.technical issues B.safety of the system
C.financial problems D.maintenance of railway tracks
55.Which of the following words best describes the author’s attitude towards China’s high-speed
railway plan?
A.Critical. B.Reserved. C.Doubtful D. Positive.
56.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

Did you see snow in your hometown last winter? Did you feel it was warmer than before? “There have been 21 warm winters in China since 1986,” said scientists. They also said that in the past 100 years, as the global(全球的) temperatures went up by 0.74℃, the temperature in North China has climbed 1.4℃ in only 50 years.
China needs to take quick action to cut carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) emission(排放), because it’s the main reason for global warming. The good news is that China has seen the importance of going green. China set the goal of cutting energy use by 20% and pollution emission by 10% in the 11th Five-Year Plan.
Can you slow global warming? Sure! You and your family can take steps to cut the amount of carbon dioxide that is sent out into the air.
Here are some pieces of advice to help you save the earth.
Wear used clothes. Wearing your brother’s, sister’s or dad’s old T-shirt means you save the energy.
Change your light bulbs(燈泡). Use energy-saving light bulbs. And don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room and turn off your television and computer when they are not in use!
Ride the bus. Taking a bus saves a lot of oil every year.
Say no to plastic bags. The next time your parents go to the market, ask them to use baskets.
Open a window. Don’t use the air-conditioner(空調(diào)), and let some fresh air in. When you have to use the conditioner, set the temperature higher in the summer and lower in the winter to save energy.
Make small changes in your daily life. Don’t use paper cups, bags and boxes.

Compared to the whole development of history, your life could be like a candle which is lit and then blown out immediately. In other words, life is short —very short. Missing any of the joys life offers is terrible.
So don’t let fears conquer your short and valuable life. If your life is being controlled by your fears, you are most certainly cheating yourself. Courage is the mental (
精神上的) muscle that conquers fear. Like all muscles, the more you use it, the stronger it will become. Courage is not something you are born with. That is to say, it must be developed. It has been said that if you face the thing you fear bravely, your fear will leave you.
For years I believed that courageous people had no fear. I was wrong. Eddie Richen Bacher put it very well when he said, "There is no courage without fear." We all have fears; however, not everyone gives in to their fears easily.
There is, very likely, something you have wanted to do for years —move to another city, start your own business, apply for a better position, or go wherever you like. Whatever it is, you should do it. Remember, life is not a practice run. This is it. A little courage leads to more.
Observe those poor people who have no courage. They only tiptoe (
躡手躡腳地走) through life, hoping they can make it safely to death. You and I never meant to live that way. Learn to live the way you like by no longer living as you dislike. Make good use of your day and have courage. That’s life!
54. We can learn from the passage that courage _______.
A. can be developed quickly B. needs to be used more often
C. is formed when one is born D. makes one very excited
55. What new opinion did the author develop?
A. All courageous people have fears.
B. Those who are brave have no fear.
C. There is no fear without courage.
D. A brave person can live a safe life.
56. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Person’s Life Is Short
B. Don’t Fear Anything
C. Never Give Up Easily
D. Courage Conquers Fear

It was a Sunday morning, and I was in a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn’t invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck? It’s a beautiful day.”
“No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning.
My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and went. I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”.
When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. A broken rib (肋骨) might have pierced (穿透) a lung....”
My mother may have said more, but I didn’t hear. I didn’t hear anything except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled (憤慨地說出) those words at him earlier in the day?
It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him.
“Daddy... I am so sorry....”
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll be okay.”
“No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning?”
My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said, “Sweetheart, I don’t remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. I remember kissing you goodnight the night before, though.” He managed a weak smile.
My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on.

A. Because he didn’t go along with his father.
B. Because he was rude to his father that morning.
C. Because he failed to come earlier after the accident.
D. Because he couldn’t look after his father in the hospital.
59. The reason why the author’s father said he forgot everything about that day is that ________.
A. he had a poor memory
B. he didn’t want to forgive his son

I was 15 months old, a happy carefree kid … until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a glass rabbit that cut my eye badly enough to blind it. My mom found a doctor who knew that if the eye were removed entirely, my face would grow up badly shaped, so my scarred (有疤痕的), sightless, cloudy and gray eye lived on with me.
Sometimes people, even strangers, asked me embarrassing questions or made hurtful remarks. When the kids played games, I was always the “monster”. I grew up imagining that everyone looked down upon me.
Yet every time Mom would say to me, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” It became what I relied on.
As a child, I thought Mom meant: “Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking.” As a teenager, even though I often looked down to hide my shame, I found that sometimes when I held my head up high people liked me.
In high schools I was even elected class president, but on the inside I still felt like a freak (怪物). All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mom and she would look at me with loving eyes and say: “Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside.”
When I met the man who became my partner for life, we looked each other straight in the eye, and he told me I was beautiful inside and out.
My mom’s love and encouragement was the spark (火花) that gave me the confidence to overcome my doubt. I had faced hardships head-on, and learned not only to appreciate myself but to have deep sympathy for others.
“Hold your head up high” has been heard many times in my home. Each of my children has felt its invitation. The gift my mom gave me lives on in another generation.
60. Why did the writer’s mother tell her to hold her head up high and face the world?

Justin’s bedroom was so full of flat bicycle tires, bent tennis rackets, deflated(癟掉的)basketballs, and games with missing pieces that you could barely get in the door. His parents pleaded with him to clean out his room.
“What use is a fish tank with a hole in the bottom?” his father asked. But Justin simply smiled and repeated his motto, “Never throw anything out, you never know when it might come in handy.”
When Justin was away from home, he always carried his blue backpack--a smaller version of his bedroom--a place to store the many objects that he collected. It was so worn and stretched that it hardly resembled a backpack anymore.
Justin had earned a reputation for figuring things out and getting people out of otherwise hopeless situations. Many of his classmates and neighbors sought him out when they needed help with a problem. On the first day of school, his friend Kenny, came looking for Justin.
“Do you think you have something in your bag that could help me remember my locker combination?” he asked. “I lost the piece of paper it was written on. I have a science class in two minutes and if I'm late on the first day it’ll make me look bad for the rest of the year.” Kenny looked really worried.
“Relax,” Justin said, taking his backpack off and unzipping the top. “Remember how you borrowed my notebook in homeroom to write the combination down? Well, I know how we can recover what you wrote.”
He took the notebook and a soft lead pencil out of his bag. The page that Kenny had written on had left faint marks on another page in the notebook. Justin held the pencil on its side and rubbed it lightly over the marks. Slowly but surely the numbers of the locker combination appeared in white, set off by the gray pencil rubbings.
“That's amazing!” Kenny said. “I owe you one.” And he dashed off to open his locker.
It was just another day in the life of the boy whose motto was “Never throw anything out, you never know when it might come in handy.”
