Every day we go to school and listen to teachers, and the teachers will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends-you are in a situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.
Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. There are two main things that make aircraft engineering difficult: the need to make every part as reliable as possible and the need to build everything as light as possible. They are to be combined (結(jié)合).The fact that an aeroplane is up in the air and can't stop, if anything goes wrong, makes it perhaps a matter of life or death that its performance is completely dependable.
Given a certain power of engine, and so a certain amount of oil, there is a practical limit to the total weight of aircraft that can be made to fly. Out of that weight as much as possible is wanted for fuel radio instruments, passenger seats, or freight(貨物) room, and, of course, the passengers or freight themselves. So the aircraft has to be as small and light as safety will allow. The designer must work out the normal load that each part will bear. This specialist is called the "stress(壓力) man." He takes notice of any unusual stress that may be put on the part as a means against errors in production, accidental damage, etc.
The stress man's decisions go to the designer of the part, and he must make it as strong as the stress man says is necessary. One or two small parts are always tested to prove that they are as strong as the designer wanted. Each separate part is tested, then a whole one-for example, a complete wing, and finally the whole aeroplane. When a new type of aeroplane is being made, normally only one of the first three made will be flown. Two will be destroyed on the ground in strict tests. The third one will be tested in the air.
When a plane has passed all the tests it can get a government permission of flight, without which it is illegal(非法的) to fly, except for test flying.
5. The main difficulty of aircraft design lies in________.
A. the combination of lightness and reliability
B. the speed and cheapness
C. reliability and passenger comfort
D. its engine power and oil burning
6. The stress man's job is to work out ________.
A. how safe the plane is
B. the load that each part bears
C. the possible errors made by designers
D. the amount of load the aircraft may carry
7. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The total weight of an aircraft depends on the power of the engine.
B. An aircraft has to pass all the tests.
C. Permission of flight can be got from the government.
D. It is necessary for all the first planes to be tested in the air.

When a consumer(消費者) finds that something he or she bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to what the producer says for it, the first step is to present the warranty (保單), or any other record that might help, at the store of buying. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.
A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain(投訴)directly to the store manager. In general, the "higher up" the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favour, taking it as true that he or she had a just right.
Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of buying, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.
Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can show clearly what is wrong with what was bought in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, "The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear. "is better than "This stereo(立體音響)does not work."
The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the producer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the expected result, the consumer can go a step further. He or she can threaten(恐嚇) to take the seller to court or report the seller to a public organization responsible for protecting consumers' rights.
1. When a consumer finds what he bought has a fault in it, he should first________.
A. complain personally to the manager
B. show something provable in written form to the store
C. threaten to take the matter to court
D. write a firm letter of complaint to the store
2. The most effective complaint about what was bought can be made by________.

B. saying firmly it is of poor quality
C. asking politely to change it
D. explaining exactly what is wrong with it
3. The passage tells us________.
A. how to make the complaint have a good effect

4. According to the passage, the last way a consumer has to use is________.

B. to quarrel with the manager
C. to warn the seller that he or she will turn to the court or a consumers'organization for help
D. to collect several fighters to threaten the seller

It is usually seen as an old people's problem, but more and more youngsters are suffering from high blood pressure.
As many as 3.8 percent of teenagers aged 15 to 20 are threatened (威脅) by hypertension, according to a survey of 10,000 young people in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province. The figure is much higher than in past years and doctors are worried that it could lead to increased health problems.
Research shows that teens with higher-than-normal blood pressure are more likely to suffer from heart attacks and strokes (中風(fēng)) later in life.
"It's now known that adolescence (青春期) is the most important period for hypertension and heart disease," said Vernon Barnes, a physiologist (生理學(xué)家) at the Medical College of Georgia, US. "It's no longer considered to be an adult disease-hypertension has risen rapidly among young people."
Unhealthy habits and pressure are the most likely cause of high blood pressure, according to Yu Lingfan, chief physician at the second clinical hospital attached to Harbin Medical University.
"Instead of various kinds of tonics (滋補品), children should have more vegetables and fruit, so that there are enough vitamins in their bodies," Yu said.
Meanwhile, foods containing a lot of fat, salt or sugar should be avoided.
Yu believes that students should learn to deal with study pressures if they are to stay healthy. Taking more physical exercise rather than watching TV or playing video games can make the body strong and reduce the chances of high blood pressure.

American news experts at the Associated Press have chosen the top stories of 2003. Almost all the news directors named the war in Iraq as the most important event of the year.
The United States led a military coalition(聯(lián)軍) against Iraq beginning March nineteenth. The military action began after President Bush repeatedly warned Iraq to report about its weapons of mass destruction. By April seventh, much of Baghdad was under control of the coalition. Mister Bush declared major combat operations over on May first.
Many Iraqis said they were happy that Saddam Hussein's rule was over. But Iraqi resisters have continued to attack and kill coalition fighters and Iraqi civilians.
American troops captured Saddam Hussein on December thirteenth. But so far the coalition has found no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
The news expert named the loss of the American space shuttle Columbia as the second most important story of the year. Columbia broke apart on February first as it returned to Earth after a sixteen-day research flight. Seven astronauts died in the explosion.
The Associated Press experts said a special recall vote by citizens in the state of California was the third most important story of the year. On October seventh, California voters removed Democrat Gray Davis as governor. They chose actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, to replace him. Under Governor Davis, California had suffered severe financial problems.
The news experts said the disease SARS was another top story. In February, health experts in Asia reported the first cases of a new disease later named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Over time, about eight thousand people around the world became sick with the disease. Almost eight hundred people reportedly died.
The news agency experts identified a power loss in North America as the next most important event. On August fourteenth, a power company computer failed in the American state of Ohio. This caused a loss of electricity in eight American states and part of Canada.
Next, the experts noted America's improving economy. The nation's growth rate from July through September was the best in nineteen years. But estimates said the federal debt increased to five hundred thousand million dollars.
Another top story was the deadly wildfires in California in October and November. The news experts said the tax cut of three-hundred-thirty-thousand-million dollars for American taxpayers was also an important story.
The safe return of a kidnapped fifteen-year-old girl was voted the ninth biggest story. Finally, the news experts chose the campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination for president in the two-thousand-four election. Former Vermont governor Howard Dean now appears to lead eight other competitors.
