The worst US economic depression in the recent 70 years is forcing senior citizens out of retirement, leaving them fighting for jobs in a weak labor market or risking homelessness.
The study by Experience Works, released on Tuesday, showed 46 percent of the 2,000 low income people over 55 years who participated needed to find work to keep their homes. Nearly half of them had been searching for work for more than a year.
“These people are at the age where they understandably thought their job-searching years were behind them,” said Cynthia Metzler, president and CEO of Experience Works.
“Bur here they are, many in their 60s, 70s and beyond, desperate to find work so they can keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.”
According to the study, many of the participants had no intention of working past their 60 th birthday, but _______ after being laid off or following the death of the partner. Over a third of the participants had retired.
Ninety percent of the respondents 76 years and older planned to continue working for the next five years.
Huge medical bills due to a persona illness or that of a partner were also reasons for coming out of retirement, the survey found. The longest and deepest economic decline since the 1930s is making finding a job for the low-income elderly workers a difficult challenge.
The Experience Works study found that 46 percent of the elderly jobseekers were sometimes forced to choose between paying rent and buying food or medication. Almost three-quarters believed their age made it harder to compete for jobs with younger workers.
“This study underscores calls for the need to create policies that remove barriers to employment for elder workers and provide additional programs and services specifically aimed at helping elder people re-enter the work force or remain working,” said Metzler.

England’s shameful defeat in the race to host the 2018 World Cup caused a bitter new “Cold War” with Russia last night.
The & 15 million bid — accompanied by David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham — didn’t even get past the first round.
It secured just two of the 22 votes by committee members of football’s world governing body Fifa in a secret ballot (投票) — one of which was cast by England’s own FA Chairman Geoff Thompson.
Among strong suspicions of shady backroom deals, the tournament went to Russia.
Last night Downing Street did little to hide its anger and said Mr. Cameron had no plans to congratulate Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin personally “at the present time”.
Shortly after Fifa president Sepp Blatter declared Russia the winner for 2018, he announced that Qatar, a tiny desert country which has never even qualified to play in the World Cup, would host the 2022 tournament, beating bids from Australia, the United States and a joint bid from Japan and South Korea.
Fifa’s controversial decisions strengthened suspicions that the voting process was corrupt and that the sport’s world governing body had submitted to the energy-rich countries’ billions, meaning that England’s bid never stood a chance.
A “bitterly disappointed” and visibly furious Mr. Cameron said England had the best technical bid and what he believed was the strongest commercial bid, adding: “It turns out that’s not enough.”
Asked what more England could have done to secure the tournament, the Prime Minister replied: “I think that’s for others to say.”
When Mr. Cameron met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev he had challenged him to a “good clean fight” but last night the Prime Minister’s official spokesman refused to say the voting process was either good or clean.
Number 10 aides were furious with the outcome after Mr. Cameron had made two flying visits to Zurich where the vote was held and been up into the small hours yesterday like crazy lobbying for critical votes.
So despite three days of intense lobbying in Zurich by the Three Lions, the England bid team feared they had been damaged by an accusation of corruption against Fifa members by BBC’s Panorama and The Sunday Times.

B、England hasn’t been fully prepared for the bid of the 2018 World Cup
C、Russia has done far better than England to bid of the 2018 World Cup
D、there were dirty deals behind the decision
80.As can be concluded from the passage, one of the reasons for England’s failure might be _______.
A、its lack of experience
B、its bad economic
C、its lack of energy
D、an accusation by BBC’s Panorama and The Sunday Times

The amount of household waste being recycled in England has increased more than three times in the past decade, official figures show.
But householders (住戶) are still throwing away more than 60% of their rubbish, the statistics from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Rural Affairs (Defra) found.
The proportion of household waste being recycled, composted (堆肥) or reused rose slightly last year from 37.6% in 2008 – 2009 to 39.7% in 2009 – 2010.
According to the figures, 9.4 million tonnes of waste was recycled last year, up from 9.1 million the year before and more than three times the 2.8 million tonnes recycled in 2000 – 2001.
The overall amount of waste being sent to landfill by local councils fell by 2.7% on the previous year and now stands at 23.7 million tonnes.
Each English household threw away on average just over a tonne of rubbish in the past, of which 411 kilograms was recycled, composted or reused and 625kg ended up in landfill or burned.
The amount of waste being sent to landfill by local councils fell by 9.4% to 12.5 million tonnes last year.
The Government recently launched a review into England’s waste strategy in a bid to encourage people to reduce levels of rubbish being thrown into landfills and make it easier for them to increase the amount of waste being recycled.
Ministers have been eager to cut the number of wheelie bins and containers people have to deal with to sort their waste.
And in a move which could see a reversal (逆轉(zhuǎn)) in the trend towards fortnightly (兩周一次的) bin rounds, brought in as part of efforts to boost recycling, the review is also looking at how the Government can work with councils to increase the frequency and quality of collections.
71. The household waste being recycled in 2009 – 2010 made up _______.
A、60% B、37.6% C、39.7% D、94.%
72. The overall amount of waste produced in 2008 – 2009 was about ________.
A、9.4 million tonnes B、9.1 million tonnes

A、make it more convenient to recycle waste
B、call on householders to sort rubbish out
C、make it easier to collect recyclable waste
D、encourage householders to reduce rubbish
74. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、All the waste will be reused in the future.
B、Fortnightly collection is a waste of resources
C、More waste will be recycled instead of ending up in landfills
D、It will take a shorter time for the waste to be collected
75. What is the text mainly about?

The survival of about one fifth of the world’s vertebrates — animals with a backbone — is considered threatened, according to new research published in the journal Science. That’s a large fraction of Earth’s animals, but this new study held some good news too. Conservation efforts by humans have slowed the loss of many species of amphibians (兩棲動物), birds, and mammals. Losses in these groups would have been about 20 percent greater had it not been for recent action of protection.
Among the animal-conservation success stories is one about birds called Mauritius kestrels (紅隼). In the 1970s, just four of these birds were left in the world. Through a special breeding program, scientists were able to increase their number to about 1,000 and release them into the wild.
Humpback whales (座頭鯨) have benefited greatly from recent conservation efforts as well. They were once on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) list of species threatened with extinction. But the species is now in less danger, thanks to laws that ban whale hunting. The IUCN even moved the humpback into “species of the least concern”.
Over the past 100 years, the white rhino (犀牛) of South Africa has also made an amazing recovery because of habitat protection. The breed multiplied from just 50 animals to about 17.000. Their home has been turned into a protected area, safe from poachers (people who hunt animals illegally) and other threats.
Stuart Butchart, one of the authors of the new study in Science, is encouraged by the positive effects of conservation. But he says, “Biodiversity (生物多樣化) of species is in a frightening state. Its situation is getting worse. But our results show we can turn the situation around.”
New conservation policies hopefully are on the way. One hundred ninety-three countries recently met in Japan at the Convention on Biological Diversity to set goals for preserving threatened wildlife and their habitats Only 1 percent of ocean and 12 percent of land areas were protected under earlier agreements. Two new goals set by the group are to designate (指定) 10 percent of the world’s ocean and 17 percent of land environments as protected areas to help increase endangered-animal population.
66. What can we learn from the passage?
A、Though there was a special breeding program, the number of Mauritius kestrels didn’t increase.
B、Conservation efforts should not only be made by human beings.
C、Humpback whales are not no the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s list now.
D、Because many groups are working to protect wildlife, natural habitats are in good condition.
67. Which of the following is not mentioned in people’s conservation efforts?
A、Habitat protection B、Breeding programs
C、Laws of banning whale hunting D、Creation of studying organizations
68. The author uses some successful animal-conservation examples to show that _______.
A、conservation works B、man conquers nature
C、animals are more important D、law is fair
69. From the last paragraph we can infer that _______.
A、much more must be done to prevent species from becoming extinct
B、many animals should be removed from the endangered list
C、humans seem to be at a loss in face of the protection of biodiversity
D、people’s concern of species extinction is completely unnecessary
70. The purpose of the new goals set by the Convention on Biological Diversity is to ______.
A、protect ocean habitats
B、build land environments
C、increase the population of endangered animals
D、control animal population

Copenhagen, one of the world’s most bicycle-friendly cities, has begun turning its extensive network of cycle paths into bike highways in an effort to push more commuters (上下班往返的人) to leave their cars at home.
Considered one of Europe’s two “bicycle capitals” along with Amsterdam, Copenhagen counts more bicycles than people and cycling is so popular that its numerous bike paths can become congested.
Two-wheeler traffic jams are especially regular on the main Noerrebrogade thoroughfare (大街) used by around 36,000 cyclists a day. “You have to elbow your way (擠過去) to go forward and some cyclists aren’t always thoughtful,” complains 22-year-old university student Lea Bresell.
The creation of bike highways “comes right on time”, says Danish Cyclist Federation spokesman Frits Bredal. “Copenhagen’s roads are overloaded with people who want to ride their bicycles in all kinds of weather,” he says.
If in the 1960s Danes viewed the car as the symbol of freedom, the bicycle has assumed that role today, Bredal says.
“It’s a means of transportation used by all social classes, and even politicians ride bikes,” he says.
It is on crowded Noerrebrogade — the busiest bicycle street in Europe — that city planners have decided to build the first of Copenhagen’s environmentally friendly streets. The jammed bike paths will be widened up to four meters on either side of the road, which will itself be reserved for buses only.
The idea is to make Noerrebrogade “Europe’s great cycling street”, says Andreas Roehl, the Copenhagen city’s bicycle program manager who is also known as “Mister Bike”.
But Roehl is not content with making life easier for Copenhagen’s inner city cyclists: He wants to get suburbanites (郊區(qū)居民) out of their cars and onto two wheels as well.
His goal is to increase the percentage of suburban commuters cycling to and from the city from the 33 percent it is today to more than 50 percent by 2015. Within the city, 55 percent of all commuters already travel by bike.
Already Copenhagen stands out among other European capitals for its cycling infrastructure, counting more than 390 kilometers of bike paths.
61. What is the main idea of the passage?
A、Copenhagen is planning to build bicycle-friendly highways.
B、Copenhagen is planning to build highways.
C、Copenhagen is one of Europe’s two “bicycle capitals”.
D、Two-wheeler traffic jams are especially common in Copenhagen.
62. What does Lea Bresell think of the present bike traffic on the main Noerrebrogade thoroughfare?
A、pleasant B、Terrible
C、Cyclists are considerate D、Bike paths are not made full use of
63. We can infer that _______.
A、most of people in Copenhagen can’t afford to buy cars
B、hiking is very common in Copenhagen
C、cars will not be allowed to run on the widened Noerrebrogade thoroughfare
D、Noerrebrogade thoroughfare will be deserted
64. How do suburban commuters travel to and from the city in Copenhagen at present?
A、More than half of the suburban commuters travel by bike.
B、Almost all the suburban commuters take buses.
C、Few suburban commuters travel by car.
D、About one third of the suburban commuters travel by bike.
65. According to the passage, what do you know about Copenhagen?
A、Copenhagen possibly has the longest among European capitals.
B、Copenhagen has the longest history among European capitals.
C、Copenhagen has the largest population among European capitals.
D、Copenhagen is the biggest in size among European capitals.

How can you help kids cope with (應對) stress? Proper rest and good nutrition can boost coping skills, so can good parenting. Make time for your kids each day. Whether they need to talk or just be in the same room with you, make yourself available.
Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day — especially if they’ve had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in you kids shows that they’ve important to you.
Help your child cope with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up with a few solutions. For example, he should cut back on after-school activities, spending more time talking with parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal.
You can also help by predicting potentially stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For example, let a child know ahead of time (but not too far ahead of time) that a doctor’s appointment is coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably won’t need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress.
Remember that some level of stress is normal; let kids know that it’s OK to feel angry, scared, lonely, or anxious and that other people share those feelings.
When kids can’t or won’t discuss these issues, try talking about your own concerns. This shows that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with when they’re ready. If a child shows symptoms (癥狀) that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor or other mental health experts.
Most parents have the skills to deal with their children’s stress. The time to seek professional attention is when any change in behavior persists, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behavior is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home.
56.What is the purpose of the text?
A、To share the author’s ideas on proper parenting.
B、To persuade parents to spend more time with kids.
C、To advise parents how to help kids deal with stress.
D、To seek different ways to help solve kids’ problems.
57. What makes it difficult for parents to spare quality time for kids?
A、Kids growing so fast. B、Parents being tired out.
C、Kids losing interest in parents. D、There being too much homework.
58. You are advised not to talk too much about a stressful situation in advance because _______.
A、it does no good to your kids B、it doesn’t work in practice
C、your kinds may lose interest D、your kids don’t want to listen
59. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A、Normal people share the same feelings.
B、It is normal for kids to have some stress.
C、Kids should get rid of the negative feelings.
D、Everybody feels angry, scared, lonely or anxious.
60. The underlined word “counselor” in Paragraph 6 probably refers to _______.
