According to a U.S. survey, one third of all school aged children in the United States are, for some part of the week, latch key kids; that is, they go home to an empty house. The total number may be between five and seven million children between 5 and 13 years old. The survey found that 15% were home alone before school, 76% after school and 9% at night. Perhaps, the 9% have parents who work at night.
One-half of all children in the country aged 12 to 14 are home alone an average of seven hours a week. The very poor in America are less likely(可能) to leave their children alone at home, or allow them to go home alone, than families who earn much more. This is probably because the very poor live in less safe neighborhoods, and have fewer friends or family who can help in case of emergency(在緊急情況下). Though they work for hours, working mothers spend an average of five-and-a-half hours a day with their children.
Among these latch key children, we know that about 51% are doing poorly in school. Most teachers believe that being alone at home is the number one cause of school failure. Home-alone children are more likely to become unhappy, smoke cigarettes and drink wine. They are also more likely to abuse drugs(吸毒).

When thinking about quitting(停止) smoking…
List all the reasons why you want to quit. Every night before going to bed, repeat one of the reasons 10 times.
Decide positively that you want to quit. Try to avoid negative thoughts about how difficult it might be. Develop strong personal reasons as well as your health and responsibility to others. For example, think of all the time you waste taking cigarette breaks, rushing out to buy a pack, hunting a light, etc. Set a date for quitting --- perhaps a special day like your birthday, a holiday. If you smoke heavily at work, quit during your vacation. Make the date holy seriously, and don't let anything change it. Begin to condition yourself physically; start a modest (適當?shù)? exercise; drink more water; get plenty of rest.
Immediately after quitting...
The first few days after you quit, spend as much free time as possible in places where smoking is prohibited, e.g. libraries, museums, theatres, department stores, etc.
Drink large quantities of water and fruit juice. Try to avoid wine, coffee, and other drinks which remind you of cigarette smoking.
Strike up a conversation with someone instead of a match for a cigarette.
If you miss the feeling of having a cigarette in your hand, play with something else - a pencil, a pen, a ruler. If you miss having something in your mouth, try a fake (仿制的) cigarette.
1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. Whenever you feel like a cigarette, try to forget it by sleeping.
