Global warming is one of the major environmental problems we are facing today.

Scientists think a further rise in the carbon dioxide levels will make this situation worse. The greenhouse effect causes the earth’s heat to be trapped in the atmosphere, which results in the increase in temperature. This, in turn, has an effect on various plants and animals. Global warming makes it difficult for some of them to survive.

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes (撞擊) through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks. There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman' s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is "blown up" in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff (懸崖) a thousand feet high. His parachute (降落傘) failed to open, and he was killed. Thomas Edison was one of ten said to be the greatest genius of his age. There are only a few men in all of the history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be happy only because someone said he was a genius. “There is no such thing as genius,” Edison said. He said tha t what people called genius was mostly hard work.

Last year, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington D. C. I saw many of our unfortunate and homeless fellow citizens on the street.
　 Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. 　 In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice. I remember a time, at age 17 — I was a busboy, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. So I know what it’s like, and I should have known better.
　 But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am, where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going.
