Pete hated losing at anything. His parents, teachers, and many others, said he didn’t know how to lose, but the truth of it was that he couldn’t stand losing. It seemed to Pete that losing was the worst thing that could happen to anyone. If there was a game Pete wasn’t good at, he simply wouldn’t play it.

A new kid, Albert, started at Pete’s school; he was a good table football player, and it didn’t take Pete and Albert long before they challenged each other to a game. Pete prepared for the match carefully, but Albert seemed not to be taking the thing at all seriously. He walked about the whole time, smiling and telling jokes about all kinds of things. But on the football table, Albert was a real player. He scored goals again and again, laughing and joking all the time. However, Albert was paying so little attention to the match that Pete managed to change the scoreboard(記分板)while his opponent was looking elsewhere, and so Pete managed to win by cheating. Pete made a big thing of his win, but it seemed not to matter to Albert.

“It’s been fun. We should play again some other time”, said Albert.

On that day, people at school talked about Pete’s great victory. But, that night, Pete didn’t feel happy. For several days Pete didn’t feel happy. For several days Pete watched the new guy. He was great at some things, terrible at others, but he enjoyed everything equally. Gradually, Pete understood that the result was not very important. A ban on smoking in public places has come into force in China — home to a third of the world's smokers.

The move is aimed at controlling the number of deaths from smoking-related diseases, running at a million a year. The figure is predicted to double by 2020. The new smoking ban is an attempt to prevent that prediction coming true.

The new laws forbid smoking in places like restaurants, hotels, railway stations or theatres, but not at the office. Employers will have the duty to warn staff of the dangers of smoking but not to forbid them from lighting up at their desks.

But the new laws have been criticized because they do not include punishments for those who choose to flout them. Quite many smokers do not seem to take much notice of them. Often you find people smoking at the next table while you are eating your meal or having a drink in a bar. At bus stops as well as in railway stations smoking can also be seen here and there. Business owners are also angry at the efforts to force them to ban smoking on their premises(經(jīng)營(yíng)場(chǎng)所), because many customers refuse to go to restaurants or places of entertainment where smoking is forbidden.

It appears that many Chinese people are unaware of the dangers of smoking. Research suggests only one in four knows the harm cigarettes or second-hand smoke can cause. Officials say they have to try to persuade people not to smoke to try to reduce the numbers dying from smoking related diseases. At the same time, however, the government makes a lot of money from the sales of cigarettes by the state-owned firm that makes and sells all tobacco products throughout the country.

68. What does the underlined word “flout” in Para. 4 mean?

    A. Be in favor of B. Be unaware of

    C. Act against D. Be indifferent

69. Some businessmen dislike the ban because ______.

    A. they will not enjoy smoking as before

B. their sales of cigarettes will greatly fall

    C. their customers will get angry with them

    D. the ban may cause their income to fall

70. Why is it difficult for the ban to be carried out?

    1. Because the ban on smoking is not written into the law.

    2. Because there are no clear regulations about punishment.

    3. Because cigarette firms continue producing cigarettes.

    4. Because few Chinese know about the danger of smoking.

    A. 1,2,3 B. 1,2,4 C. 1,3,4 D. 2,3,4

The south and east of the Great Lakes is famous for the huge amounts of snow it receives. When the snow starts to fall every year, people start discussing the phrase “l(fā)ake-effect snow”.

Lake-effect snow which is influenced by the movement of cold air over the relatively warm water of the Great Lakes often comes in late autumn and early winter. Because of the at least 20 degrees’ difference between the lake water and the overrunning air, it’s easy to form huge amounts of snow.

As the cool air crosses the water of Great Lakes, the lowest levels of the atmosphere begin to warm and pick up moisture. This newly warmed atmosphere is lighter than the cold air above it, so it starts rising. As the changed air continues to climb higher and higher, it finally meets much colder atmosphere which changes the moisture into water drops and ice, forming clouds. After this course repeats a number of times, the clouds become heavier and heavier, and then they are changed into snow and fall down.

The most important point that decides the amount of snowfall is the direction of the wind. If the wind runs perpendicularly(垂直地)across the lake, there won’t be plenty of time for clouds to develop. However, if the wind runs in the opposite direction, clouds will form easily. The longer the cold air travels over the lake, the more moisture it is able to produce, which leads to a greater amount of snow.

The largest amount of the lake-effect snow was found across the U.P. of Michigan, the northwestern Pennsylvania and the far southwestern and northwestern New York, which are all along the south or east of the Great Lakes. It has been over 100 inches of snowfall in a winter season.

65. The level of the snowfall depends on ________.

       A. the size of the lake

       B. the direction of the wind

       C. the temperature of the lake

       D. the strength of the wind

66. From the passage, we can learn that ________.

       A. clouds are easy to produce with the help of the perpendicular wind

       B. cold air always falls down and picks up moisture to form clouds

       C. the temperature of the lake water is the same as the overrunning air’s above it

       D. the longer journey of the cold atmosphere can make a grater amount of snow

67. The passage is mainly about ________.

       A. the influences of the lake-effect snow for local people

       B. the weight between moisture and atmosphere

       C. how the phrase “l(fā)ake-effect snow” comes in New York

       D. how the lake-effect snow forms around the Great Lakes

Two students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have managed to develop a banana piano. Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum were looking for a way of turning everyday things into keyboards. They have developed a piece of equipment called MakeyMakey that can turn fruit, animals and even humans into keyboards. Mr. Rosenbaum said the idea behind the equipment was to get people to see the world around them as a collection of kits(原件).

When asked about safety matters, Mr. Rosenbaum said the electric current used in the equipment was very small and harmless to the human bodies and animals. He said fuses(保險(xiǎn)絲)had been included into board as well as the USB port(接口)to make sure it was safe.

Mr. Silver said many things in our daily life can be used in their experiment. Even his cat became part of the experiment. According to Mr. Rosenbaum they have managed to turn two of his friends into sound machines, a beach ball into a game controller and have used a cup of milk to make music.

Around 150 kits have been experienced by test-users. AnnMarie Thomas, lived in Minneapolis, was  among the first ones to try it. She said even her four-year-old daughter had managed to use the equipment without any help. “My kids love it. My daughter was able to set it up. She has tried many other toys and has even managed to turn herself into the keyboard.” Ms. Thomas, a former scientist of engineering, whose job is to train future engineering teachers, thought the equipment could be quite useful to teachers and students. “It is a great way to encourage kids to love science and technology,” she said. “It helped my daughter understand how science and technology may change the world.

61. What’s Jay and Eric’s purpose of developing MakeyMakey?

A. To help people make more cheap pianos.

B. To encourage people to learn more about music.

C. To let people know that things in the world can be used as kits.

D. To show that modern technology can help with music development.

62. According to the passage, safety measures of MakeyMakey include ________.

b. having low electric pressure

c. having fuses in it

d. using USB ports

A. a, b                  B. b, c                   C. a, c                   D. a, d
