One of the most widely accepted, commonly repeated assumptions (假設) in our culture is that if you exercise, you will lose weight. I exercise all the time, but I still have got fat that hangs over my belt when I sit. Why isn’t all the exercise getting rid of it?
It’s a question many of us could ask. More than 45 million Americans now belong to a health club, up from 23 million in 1993. We spend some $19 billion a year on gym (健身房) memberships. Of course, some people join and never go. Still, as one major study — the Minnesota Heart Survey — found, more of us at least say we exercise regularly.
And yet obesity figures have risen sharply in the same period: a third of Americans are obese, and another third count as overweight by the Federal Government’s definition. Yes, it’s entirely possible that those of us who regularly go to the gym would weigh even more if we exercised less. But like many other people, I get hungry after I exercise, so I often eat more on the days I go to the gym than on the days I don’t. Could exercise actually be keeping me from losing weight?
The popular belief that exercise is essential for weight control is actually fairly new. As recently as the 1960s, doctors routinely advised against too much exercise, particularly for older adults who could injure themselves. Today doctors encourage even their oldest patients to exercise, which is nice advice for many reasons: People who regularly exercise are at significantly lower risk for all kinds of diseases — those of the heart in particular. They less often develop cancer and many other illnesses. But the past few years of obesity research show that the role of exercise in weight loss has been wildly over-evaluated.
“In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless,” says Eric Ravussin, exercise researcher at Louisiana State University. Many recent studies have found that exercise isn’t as important in helping people lose weight as you hear so regularly in gym advertisements or on shows like The Biggest Loser — or from magazines like this one.

Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly, not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake? Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite “Why, thank you,” but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices (good and bad) reflect about your personal qualities?
Choosing the right is an art, I believe. It calls for empathy-the ability to put yourself into someone else’s head and heart. We’re all able to do this; in fact, we’re born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhood, however, it needs to be strengthened-by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn’t, we’re not able to understand other people’s feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional qualities.
Think back to the presents you’ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world. Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.
We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won’t make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.
63.The underlined expression “you had missed the mark” means “you had failed to_________ ”.
A. make her feel better B. receive a present in return
C. get the expected effect D. keep your friendship
64. Which of the following is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Selecting the right gift is an ability people are born with.
B. Choosing gifts requires one to understand the receivers.
C. Emotional changes influence one’s choice of gifts.
D. Natural empathy needs to be strengthened.
65. In the third paragraph, the author tells us that _____________. .
A. one learns from what he did in the past
B. one should spend more time choosing gifts
C. the choice of gifts reflects one’s emotional qualities
D. attention should be paid to the receivers’ responses
66. The best title for this passage is “___________”.
A. Message in a Gift B. Ways of Choosing Gifts
C. Exchanging Presents D. An Important Tradition

A simple flower made headlines in the British press last week. How could that be?
British Prime Minister David Cameron and his delegation(代表團) were attending a reception hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They insisted on wearing poppies(罌粟花) in their buttonholes.
What’s wrong with that?
According to the Global Times, Chinese officials apparently had asked the UK delegation not to wear poppies. The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.
So what’s the importance of the poppy? It’s a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people.
From the Chinese point of view, the poppy is a symbol of China’s shame at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars(鴉片戰(zhàn)爭) of the 19th century. Britain forced China to open the borders to trade – including in the opium – which was made from poppies grown in India.
Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World War I. Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried. Since then, Poppy Day (November 11) has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.
So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons. And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other’s viewpoint.
Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny. And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guests from overseas. US President Barack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain’s Queen – a dull person with no interest in music. Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies. But they were in US format(格式) and impossible to play on British DVD players.
Many countries have diplomats(外交官) stationed overseas. Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home. However, sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook the cultural significance of a small flower.
59. British Prime Minister David Cameron probably attended a reception in Beijing on __________.
A. October 1 B. November 11 C. December 31 D. January 11
60. The poppy reminds the Chinese of __________.
A. the Chinese soldiers killed during World War II
B. the British soldiers who were killed and buried during World War I
C. the suffering caused by Britain during World War I
D. the shame caused by European countries in the 19th century
61. The diplomatic problem in Beijing is mainly caused by __________.
A. the language difference B. the different lifestyle
C. the translation mistake D. the cultural difference
62. What is the main idea of the 9th paragraph?
A. US President Barack Obama likes to present gifts to other leaders
B. US leaders and British leaders get along well with each other
C. Cultural differences can also be interesting and funny
D. Cultural differences can cause a big problem

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined(定義) more by the detours (繞行路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, energetic kids who hate rules and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb(羊羔) was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my optimism to see me through. We took the country roads without any other choice. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids run after him one another. They’d get back in the car breathless and full of energy, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers(蚱蜢) in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish jumping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons.
We eventually arrived at my parents’ door step astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining(教訓) technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are fast and straight out of necessity. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone brave enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may help to discover the best part of a journey----and the best part of yourself.
55. The author stopped regularly on the country roads to__________.
A. relax in the fresh air
B. take a deep breath
C. take care of the lamb
D. let the kids play with Banner
56. What does the author discover from the trip according to Paragraph 6?
A. Freeways are where beauty hides.
B. Getting close to nature adds to the joy of life.
C. Enjoying the beauty of nature benefits one’s health.
D. One should follow side roads to watch wild animals.
57. Why did the author ask the kids to get out of the car on their way back home?
A. To give herself some time to read.
B. To order some food for them.
C. To play a game with them.
D. To let them cool down.
58. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Charm of the Detour.
B. The Road to Bravery.
C. Creativity out of Necessity.
D. Road trip and Country Life.

It was a warm April day when a big fat envelope came in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I tore open the packet. My eyes were fixed on the word “congratulations.” I don’t remember ever smiling so wide.
Then I looked at my financial package.
The cost of Dream School’s tuition(學費), room and board was around $ 40,000- an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they weren’t as famous as my first choice.
In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn’t sure what to do.
One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents’ financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself.
At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring.
As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there.
In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream” university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.

54. What does the author mainly want to say?
A. You should try your best to attend your dream school.
B. You should consider comfort in your choice of schools.
C. Your choice of schools should be based on their fame.
D. Your second-choice college may actually be your best fit.
