When I moved into an empty dormitory for the first time two years ago, I was certain of a few things. Firstly, I realized that I didn’t1anybody at the school. Secondly, I knew that I wanted to work hard at my lessons and learn something useful. And thirdly, I wanted to have a good time with new classmates, without my parents around.
The first2frightened me in the beginning. But that3quickly disappeared. It was the other two goals4ended up being my difficulties. I knew that it was hard to devote enough time to class and to social efforts. But I wanted to5in both. I knew this would be a6, but I didn’t realize how much until classes began.
I got on well with the other girls who lived in my dorm.7, instead of finishing my homework8it was due, I went upstairs and had ice cream with my neighbor. I always finished it the next day between classes. I knew it wasn’t very good and the grade I9showed my lack of effort.
I was10that I needed to find some sort of balance. So I created a schedule that would11my time up between going to class, doing homework, and relaxing. It seemed like a good idea, but I was only able to12it for a few days. A schedule like that was too much pressure.
So I tried another13. Each week I made a list of everything I had to get done during that week. Then, under the list of things I had to get done, I made a list of things I could do if I had time.
This is the method I have used since then. I’m glad that I’ve learned to14things and it has15prepare me for what is to come after graduation.

When I returned to my apartment, the phone was ringing. It was16. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. The 13 water supply forecast is based more on the water from the 14 than from the below. Interest is 15 in the ways to increase rainfall by man-made methods, and to get water from the winter snow on mountain 16. With special equipment, some scientists are studying the ways in which the mountain snow can be 17, and with the help of a repeater station, they send the 18 data (數(shù)據(jù)) to the base station. The operator at the base station can get the data at any time by 19 a button. In the near future, the forecast and use of water 20 probably depend on the advance knowledge of snow on mountains, not of water underground.

We may look at the world around us, but somehow we manage not to see it until whatever we’ve become used to suddenly disappears. 1, for example, the neatly-dressed woman I 2 to see--or look at--on my way to work each morning.
For three years, no matter 3 the weather was like, she was always waiting at the bus stop around 8:00 am. On 4days, she wore heavy clothes and a pair of woolen gloves. Sometimes 5out neat, belted cotton dresses and a hat pulled low over her sunglasses. 6, she was an ordinary working woman. Of course, I 7 all this only after she was seen no more. It was then that I realized how 8 I expected to see her each morning. You might say I 9 her.
“Did she have an accident? Something 10?” I thought to myself about her 11. Now that she was gone, I felt I had 12 her. I began to realize that part of our 13 life probably includes such chance meetings with familiar 14: the milkman you see at dawn, the woman who 15walks her dog along the street every morning, the twin brothers you see at the library. Such people are 16markers in our lives. They add weight to our 17 of place and belonging.
Think about it. 18, while walking to work, we mark where we are by 19 a certain building, why should we not mark where we are when we pass a familiar, though 20 person?
