One of the founding fathers of the internet has predicted the end of traditional television. Vint Serf, who helped to build the internet while working as a researcher in America, said that television was approaching its “iPod moment.”
In the same way that people now download their favorite music onto their iPods, he said that viewers would soon be downloading most of their favorite programmers onto their computers. “85 percent of all video we watch is pre-recorded, so you can set your system to download it at any time,”said Mr. Cerf, who is now the vice-president of Goggle.
“You’re still going to need live television for certain things--like news, sporting events and emergencies--but increasingly it will be almost like iPod, where you download content to look at later.”
Although television-on-demand has not yet become a main activity in the UK, the BBC, 1TV and Channel 4 have all invested a lot of money in technology which Mr. Cerf think will enable viewers to watch their favorite shows on their computers.
However, some critics(批評(píng)家)have warned that the Internet will collapse(崩潰)if millions of people try to download programmers at the same time.
Over the next four years, scientists think the number of videos watched over the Internet will double, with people moving from short chips to hour-long programmes.
Broadband companies claim that the service will cause“traffic jams”,which will cost millions of pounds to solve. Mr. Cerf dismissed these warnings, saying that critics had predicted 20 years ago that the net would collapse when people all around the world started to use it at the same time, “We’re far from exhausting (用盡)the capacity,” he said.“I want every one of the six billion people in the planet to be able to connect to the Internet.”

The English language is changing fast, thanks to the rapid progress of technology. We all have a rapid choice: we can either bury our heads in the sand and spend the rest of our lives wishing Shakespeare were alive and well. Or we can embrace (擁抱) the new English, enter into the spirit of the Internet age called Weblish.
“You can’t avoid it,for the simple reason that whenever a new variety of language comes along,it inevitably (不可避免的) impacts(沖擊)on the language as a whole.” says Dr. David Crystal, honorary professor of linguistics(語(yǔ)言學(xué))at the University of Wales in Bangor, whose book Language and the Internet has just been published.
The trouble with keeping up with the new English is not so much that there are so many new words but that the old words no longer mean what we thought they did. In the past, if someone said they did not have Windows, you would have to suppose they lived in a cave. These days,it is probably because they use a Mac(which is a computer, not a rain coat). Spam is as disliked as it ever was ,but it once meant an unappetizing(引不起食欲的)canned meat.It now stands for unwanted “junk” email. Spellings are changing, too. Not only is text-messaging playing “hvc wth vrbs” (havoc(混亂)with verbs), but the conventions of email communication place little emphasis on “perfect speaking”.
Weblish loves to see nouns happily become verbs(“please bookmark this site”),and verbs become nouns (“Send me the download”). Verbs and prepositions are regularly thrown together to become new nouns or adjectives(e.g. dial-up, logon, print-on-demand, pull-down, upload), while others are created from simply pairing nouns: cyberspace, Etl, hyperlink, netspeak

    2. B.
people may have different attitudes towards Weblish
    3. C.
      all people welcome Weblish
    4. D.
Weblish is not popular among people

    1. A.
      old words have new meanings
    2. B.
there are so many new words
    3. C.
the technology is changing too fast
    4. D.

Does technology pose a threat to the purity of Chinese language?
Many Chinese use instant messenger tools such as MSN or QQ, listen to music on MP3 players and log on the Internet using ADSL—most without knowing the literal Chinese translation of the abbreviations(縮略詞). But they don’t have to, as many English letters have become part of the local vocabulary.
A dozen abbreviations including GDP, NBA, IT, MP3, QQ, DVD and CEO are among the 5,000 most-frequently used words in the Chinese media last year, according to a report on the 2006 Language Situation in China.
The report said some parents are so keen on English letters that a couple tried to name their baby “@”, claiming the character used in email addresses reflects their love for the child. While the “@”is obviously familiar to Chinese e-mail users, they often use the English word “at” to pronounce it “ai ta”,or “l(fā)ove him”.
The study collected more than 1 billion language samples from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and websites. The annual report is jointly compiled by the Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission.
“Nowadays, more and more English abbreviations are being used in Chinese, making them an important part of modern language,” said Hou Min, a professor at Communication University of China.
“The abbreviations have gained popularity because of the ease of usage,” Hou said. For example, DNA is much simpler to use than its Chinese version. “As more Chinese people learn foreign languages, especially English, in recent years, using abbreviations has become a trend among educated people,” she added.
Some language scholars fear such usage will contaminate(污染)the purity of Chinese and cause confusion in communication.

    4. D.
The report is based on over 1 billion language samples from websites.
  2. 2.

Why does the author use the example of a couple who tried to name their baby “@”?

    1. A.
To show Chinese is badly polluted by English.
    2. B.
To express the couple’s love for the child.
    3. C.
To indicate “@”is a very common sign among the e-mail users.
    4. D.
To show some people are very enthusiastic over English letters.
  3. 3.

Why are the English abbreviations becoming more and more popular according to the passage?

A gentleman put an advertisement in a newspaper for a boy to work in his office. Out of the nearly fifty men who come to apply, the man selected one and dismissed the others.
“I should like to know,” said a friend, “the reason you preferred that boy, who brought not a single letter—not a recommendation (介紹信),”
“You are wrong” said the gentleman. He had a great man. He wiped his feet at the door and closed the door after him, indicating that he was careful. 科目: 來(lái)源: 題型:閱讀理解

Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids (小行星) now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it, say some scientists.
Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids (流星) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don’t threaten us. But there are also thousands whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.
Buy $50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $100 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we’ll have a way to change its course.
Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn’t be cheap.
Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare-but if one did fall, it would be the end of the world. If we don’t take care of these big asteroids, they’ll take care of us,” says one scientist. “It’s that simple.”
The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “ The world has less to fear from doomsday (毀滅性的) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,” said a New York Times article.

  1. 1.

What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?

    1. A.
They are heavenly bodies different in composition.
    2. B.
They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.
    3. C.
There are more asteroids than meteoroids.
    4. D.
Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.
  2. 2.

What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?

Cleanse, tone and moisturize: three words that everyone should keep in mind when going through their daily routines. As a society, we decide what are important habits to keep up with, such as taking care of your skin.
It takes a good five minutes every morning and night to properly care for your skin, but most men and women believe that they do not have time in their busy schedule to do so. Having good skin boosts(增加)sef-confidence and improve overall health and attitude.
Cleansing the face is important for women who wear make-up because it clears the face from exposure to free radicals(自由基) in the air. Toning your face is important to balance your skin’s PH level ( which needs to be between 4.5 and 5.5 ) and also to remove the impurities from water, which is full of lead. Finally, moisturizing your face hydrates(增濕)the skin.
In this day and age there are more issues with free radicals that damage your skin than ever before. Smog, UVA/ UVB damage, smoke, alcohol, and more are all negative contributing factors to damaging the aging of your skin.
The global community has advanced the environment into a high percentage of free radical, but we also now have the technology for the best skin care. The issue with skin care is most people feel that you only need to take action if you have a serious skin condition, such as acne(粉刺). But no matter what age and what condition your skin is in, you should actively do something to maintain it.
Most skin care products today are all-natural; many of them advertise being 100 percent vegan(素食).
Ingredients(成分)that are natural for anti-aging are : DMAE, alpha lapoic acid, antioxidants, collagen booster, SPF and many more. All of these ingredients help prevent aging and sun damage while regenerating new skin cells. Aging appears fastest on your face, neck, and back of the hands and feet, which means you must apply skin care products to all areas. People need to take care of their skin, whether they have a skin condition or not.
If one wants to age gracefully, one must put forth the effort on their skin.
