My best friend is Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment. Cocoa is a ten-year-old dog and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as1citizens.
He is a2companion. He does many amusing things that make me3, and when that happens, he is so delighted4he just keeps it up.
But one afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him,5he started pawing and smelling at the right side of my6. He had never done anything like this ever before, and I told him, “No.” To Cocoa, one “no” is usually7, but not that day. He stopped briefly, and then8ran toward me, throwing his entire weight at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I cried in9, falling down to the floor. Soon after this, I felt a lump (腫塊). I went to my doctors, and after X-rays10and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.
When cancer starts, a11of calcium (鈣) builds. Then the lump or cancer attaches itself to this wall. When Cocoa jumped on me, the force of the impact broke the lump away from the wall. This made it possible for me to12the lump.
I had a complete mastectomy (乳房切除術) and the cancer has not13to any other part of my body. The doctors told me if the cancer had gone undetected even six more months, it would have been too14.
Was Cocoa15of just what he was doing? I’11 never really know. What I do know is that Cocoa not only shares his life with me, he has also made sure that I will be around to share my life with him!

Never Save Something Beautiful for That Special Day
Years ago I was talking with a classmate in Sydney. At the time his wife had just passed away not too long ago. He told me while going through her things, he found a silk scarf 1in a designer store when they had traveled to New York City. The scarf was beautiful, with elegant 2, and a high price tag still hanging. His wife begrudged wearing it; she was 3it for a special day.
He 4at that moment; I didn’t say anything either. After a long pause he said: “Never save something beautiful for that special day. Each 5day is a special day.”
Whenever I 6what he had said, I would put down the things I was doing to grab a novel, turn on the music and lie down on the couch to 7some time for myself. I would appreciate the glorious scenery of the Tanshui River through a French window, 8the dust gathered on the glass. I would take my wife out to 9 , not thinking what to do with the meal already cooked. Life should be the experience we truly cherish, not days we just have to endure.
One time I shared the above conversation with a lady. When I saw her again, she told me that she no longer 10the beautiful china in a cabinet. She had thought to save them for a special day, only to discover that it never 11came. “Future”, “someday” are not contained in her 12any more. If there are things that are pleasant or make her complacent, she wants to hear or see them now.
We often hope to gather with old friends, but always say, “l(fā)et’s find a(n) 13.” We often want to hug our grown children, but always wait for the appropriate moment. We often want to write to our spouses to express our strong affection or to show our deep admiration, but always tell ourselves that there is no need to 14. In fact, each morning when we open our eyes, we should tell ourselves that this is a special day. Each day, each minute is so incredibly 15.
