Once again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That’s where the1ended.
I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. I was2and shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t3her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too4to say no. Actually no one has invited me over to play before. But this girl, who wore the latest5, wanted to see me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister. When we got to the room she6with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies(芭比娃娃)- which was my next7. I would have thought she’d outgrown them. I has never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in cupboard laughing as we8crazy stories about the Barbies. That’s9we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wile10.
We had a great day that afternoon. Our jaws ached from11so much. She showed me her outfits, which had12come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her13a model sometimes for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes14.
Paris had the whole neighborhood15. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free16and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was17in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being18.
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me19the through teenage years and taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: your “worst enemy” can20to be your best friend.

Even though it was only October, my students were already whispering about Christmas plans. With each passing day everyone became more anxious, waiting for the final school bell.Upon its1 everyone would run for their coats and go home, everyone except David
David was a small boy in ragged clothes.I had often wondered what kind of home life David had, and what kind of mother could send her son to school dressed so2 for the cold winter months, without a coat, boots, or gloves. But something made David3 .I can still remember he was always4 a smile and willing to help.He always stayed after school to straighten chairs and mop the floor. We never talked much.He5 just simply smile and ask what else he could do, then thank me for letting him stay and slowly head for home
Weeks passed and the6 over the coming Christmas grew into restlessness until the last day of school before the holiday break.I smiled in7 as the last of them hurried out of the door.Turning around I saw David quietly standing by my desk.
"I have something for you." he said and8 from behind his back a small box.9 it to me, he said anxiously, "Open it." I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly unwrapped it.I lifted the lid and to my surprise saw nothing.I looked at David's smiling face and back into the box and said, "The box is nice, David, but it's10."
"Oh no it isn't" said David."It's full of love.My mum told me before she died that love was something you couldn't see or touch unless you know it's there."
Tears filled my eyes11 I looked at the proud dirty face that I had rarely given attention to.After that Christmas, David and I became good friends and I never forgot the meaning12 the little empty box set on my desk.

The Man Who Achieved Everything He Could
Once upon a time, there lived a man who wanted to achieve everything he was capable of achieving. He was obsessed with this desire --- he ate, slept, and walked with one and only dream: to die, having accomplished every single thing he was able to accomplish.
There were so many things he could do. He felt like the whole world could be his,1he set his mind to it.
He knew that his 2had no limits. He knew that he could accumulate 3that would dwarf (使相形見絀) that of ancient kings; he knew that he could 4books that would shake the minds of generations; he knew that he could 5things that would forever change the lives of millions of people. He lived, constantly feeling the power within --- and that power knew no bounds.
There was only one problem: having such a potential, but only one6, he had to make a choice. He had to decide where to 7all of his ability. Making that decision was extremely hard, for any 8meant cutting off some future achievements. In the meantime, he went to school, graduated, found a job, married, and 9children. And he spent every minute of his spare time trying to decide 10he should bring his potential into full play.
Time went by, and he grew11. Some roads he used to dream about became closed to him. But there was still so much he could accomplish.
One day, a sudden chest pain made him come home early. He dragged his feet to the bathroom. There, feeling12, he looked in the mirror. A worn-out, gray-haired man stared back at him. He looked 13into these eyes and, all of a sudden, 14one simple truth. The next moment, the pain came again, and his heart stopped 15forever.
The truth that came upon him was rather simple: People only flatter themselves (自以為是,自鳴得意) by thinking that they could have 16this or that if not for such-and-such circumstances. Yet this is nothing but 17. You simply lack something that is 18for achieving that goal you’ve never reached — a talent, a skill, willpower,19something else. In fact,20you don’t achieve is something you’re not capable of achieving.
