The holiday
is upon us. Finally, after months of study, you have some time to yourself. So,
why not read a book? Well, some people will say, "Why bother with books?
We have the Internet and other media that offer a lot more colorful
entertainment. Books are history!" But don't be fooled. I'm sure there's
still a lot to be said for reading.
One clear
reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful source of vocabulary, so long
as you have a good dictionary, of course. Believe me, it's far easier to get
new English words and phrases from a book or an article than it is from the TV
or the Internet.
But another
more important point is that books give you something that modern media simply
can not. The average webpage is picture-heavy and the text is often designed to
make it as easy to read as possible. While "easy" may be attractive,
unfortunately it's of little use for any long-term development of reading
skills and the general language level. Because of that, there's still no
substitute (替代品) of a
book.
But perhaps
the best single reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it
independently means that it's something you do by and for yourself. You can
choose what you want to read. It's hard work, but somewhere down the line, you'll
find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure.

A.share the pleasure of reading books
B.a(chǎn)dvise readers to read books

Space
travel used to be a young man's game, but when John Glenn went into space aboard
Discovery, four generations of men and women could stare into the sky and think
"That could be me someday. "At the same time Glenn was looking down
and doing some thinking of his own.
"It's
quite unusual, "he said, "to look down on this blue planet, seeing
the air that surrounds it. You fly over the Mediterranean, over the Middle East and it's so beautiful. You wonder why in the
world humans can't solve all the problems they have created, leaving them to fester
over the centuries. "
"I
was at the Houston airport on my way back to Washington recently when
an older guy walked up to me, all excited. He shook my hand and said, 'Boy,
you're changing my life! ' I asked,' How is that?' He said, ' I' m 74, and ever
since I was a kid I've wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
However,! haven't done it, and I
kept putting it off. But now I'm going to do it! 'And all the time his wife was
standing behind him, just shaking her head."
"But
I've noticed something. I've noticed that maybe because of all this, people are
seeing themselves in a way they haven't before. They're realizing that older
people have the same ambitions, hopes, and dreams as anybody else. I say you
should live a life based on how you feel and not by the age. "

As
prices and building costs keep rising, the "do-it-yourself(DIY) trend in
the US
continues to grow.
"We
needed furniture for our living room, "says John Ross," and we just
didn't have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables
and chairs. "John got married six months ago, and like many young people
these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of
living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $ 280 at a night
school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.
Jim
Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as
well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for
$ 520. "I was deeply upset about it. Now I have finished a car repair
course. I should be able to fix the car by myself. "
John
and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing
everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If
you want to become a "do-it-yourselfer", you can go to DIY classes.
And for those who don't have time to take a course, there are books that tell
you how you can do things yourself.

Most
of my husband's friends call him "lucky. " Why? Not because I'm a
perfect wife, or look like a model, or treat him like a king―but because I love sports.
Am
I the only woman who thoroughly enjoys sports?
When
I talk to my girlfriends about how the Minnesota Twins won their game the night
before, most of them raise their eyebrows and look at me with blank
stares. When I talk about how excited I am that football training is soon to
begin, they raise their eyebrows even further. Why is that?
The
funny thing is that I'm much fonder of sports than my husband. Oh, he tries to know
what's going on in the "sports world", but eventually he has to ask
me, "What's the score?" or "Who are we playing with?" or
"Who's in the first place?"
Yes,
I watch or listen to particularly every single Twins game throughout the entire
season. My husband watches too, but I'm the one doing the cheering, the
roaring, the jumping up and down and clapping.
Is
it strange that every morning I read the sports section in the newspaper to
read the latest articles on the Twins? Or that I know the name of every single
player on the team? Come on, there's got to be other women like me who enjoy
sports ?maybe even more than their husbands!
To
me, Sunday is the best day of the week. Why? Because it's the day we go to church,
come home from church and watch football. What could be better than that?
56.It can be
inferred from the passage that ____.
A.generally wives don't like their
husbands to enjoy sports
B.husbands like sports less than
their wives

D.a(chǎn)ll men love sports

underlined word "blank" in third paragraph probably means ____.
A.discouraged B.interested C.expressionless D.eager
58.What's the
main idea of the third paragraph?
A.The author tries to persuade her
friends into loving sports.
B.The author's girlfriends don't
share her love for sports.
C.None of the writer's girlfriends
love sports.
D.The writer's girlfriends laugh at
her love for sports.
59.The author
mentions her husband's questions in order to show____.
A.her husband learn everything from
her
B.she knows less about sports than
her husband
C.her husband respects her very much
D.her husband is short of sports
knowledge
60.Which of the
following is the best title for the passage?

B.A lucky husband

discussion about TVs and Radios. Most students
think that TVs are more useful than radios. They have vivid pictures and beautiful colors. From TV you can see and hear what
is happening in the world. However, radios
are not disappearing. They are still with us.A radio can be very small. It is very easy to carry.Besides, radio broadcasts are better for blind people. Many old people don't have good
eyesight.They can't
watch TV, but can listen to music or news over the radio. What’s more, a radio is cheaper
than a TV set. In my opinion, we should choose the one
that is suitable to us.
