When Dan Shaw gets up from the sofa in his home, Cuddles is never far away. When he wants to go outside, he doesn’t take Cuddles out for walk—Cuddles takes him for a walk. Cuddles is clearly no ordinary family pet. It is a two-foot-high miniature horse and serves as the guiding eyes of Shaw, who is blind.

When Shaw lost his sight, his wife suggested he apply for a guide dog. Shaw, an animal lover, said he couldn’t bear to part with a dog (which usually lives about eight to ten years) and get used to a new one, perhaps several times in his life.

Then Shaw heard of a program about the tiny guide horses. He learned that the horse possess many qualities that that make them an excellent choice for guiding people. They are clean friendly, smart and have great memories. They can be trained to remain calm in noisy and crowded places. Best of all, they live for 25-25years, which would enable Shaw to have the same guide companion for most or all of his life.

Shaw immediately applied to be and was accepted as the first person to receive a guide horse. The instant he met Cuddles, he knew he was making the right choice. Then he began his training.

Through training ,Shaw and Cuddles learned to find way on busy streets, step over curbs(便道沿兒)and find elevator buttons. 陳典,字馭虛,京城人。性格豪爽不羈,喜歡歌舞女色養(yǎng)狗騎馬,顯出一副有錢有勢(shì)的派頭,可是他卻不樂(lè)于做官。年輕時(shí)喜歡醫(yī)術(shù),沒(méi)有不精通的,而唯獨(dú)憑善于治療疫病的本領(lǐng)而聞名。病者聽說(shuō)陳馭虛來(lái)看病,自己慶幸不會(huì)死了。京城每年都發(fā)生大瘟疫,從晚春到秋天都不停止?滴跣廖茨,我在京城游歷,我的一位仆人染上瘟疫,陳馭虛叫人買來(lái)冰塊并用大缸盛好,叫他盡情地喝,一會(huì)兒就喝光了;到了晚上,將藥喝下去,他大汗如雨流,病就好了。我問(wèn)他這樣治的道理,陳馭虛說(shuō):“這就不是一般醫(yī)生所知道的。這里人畜集中擁擠,吃的是腥膻味重的東西,家里沒(méi)有廁所,污水充滿溝渠,而護(hù)城河長(zhǎng)久堵塞,沒(méi)有寬闊的大河深溝來(lái)排放污染物。正當(dāng)春天的時(shí)候,地氣聚集上冒,淫雨泛濫,在烈日下蒸騰,傷害人的內(nèi)臟,阻塞郁積,成為病疫。冰氣迅猛下滲,不用這種辦法就不能除去病害,所以以前收藏冰塊,用于舉行賓禮、宴會(huì)、喪禮和祭祀等場(chǎng)合,而那些老疫病也受到冰氣的滲透,百姓就不會(huì)染上疫病。我是借鑒他們流傳下來(lái)的方法啊!

我曾經(jīng)到陳馭虛家中,看見(jiàn)那些權(quán)貴們派來(lái)催促陳馭虛的使者成群到來(lái)。使者們?cè)谂_(tái)階下叩頭,而陳馭虛趴在案幾上呻吟裝病,堅(jiān)決推卻他們。背著他們就嘲笑說(shuō):“他們活著對(duì)人有害,死了對(duì)人有好處,我為什么要給他們看病呢?”陳馭虛同權(quán)貴們交往,一定要戲侮他們,說(shuō)一些傲慢的話非議他們,眾權(quán)貴不能忍受,可是只認(rèn)為他的醫(yī)術(shù)好,對(duì)他也無(wú)可奈何。我通過(guò)大理寺卿高裔和陳馭虛有交情,高裔公親人染病,派人來(lái)請(qǐng)陳馭虛,他卻不能及時(shí)到達(dá);唯有我請(qǐng)他,沒(méi)有晚上聽說(shuō)等到天明才去的。

陳馭虛家中一天天富有起來(lái),每次出行,率領(lǐng)隨從十多人,飲酒歌舞,每月耗費(fèi)千金。有人勸陳馭虛去求官?gòu)恼愸S虛說(shuō):“我每天救活幾十上百人,如果因做官而廢棄醫(yī)術(shù),這就等同于我每天殺死幾十上百人啊。”各位權(quán)貴積怨很久了,就商量說(shuō):“陳馭虛放縱無(wú)拘束,應(yīng)該用官位來(lái)約束他,這樣一來(lái)就可召之即來(lái)了!庇谑蔷徒刑t(yī)院下文讓陳馭虛做醫(yī)士。陳馭虛就稱病重不去就職,……幾個(gè)月后竟然死去。

陳馭虛閉門不出的時(shí)候,我將南行回家,去同陳馭虛告別。陳馭虛說(shuō):“我過(guò)了今年就會(huì)死去,不再見(jiàn)到您了。您知道我這樣恭恭敬敬地對(duì)待您的本意嗎?我不是一個(gè)真正的醫(yī)生,只有您能為我作傳,希望你能為我作傳記傳名。”乙亥年,我又到了京城,陳馭虛的棺柩果然暫葬路旁,遺言說(shuō)一定要得到我的文章后才正式安葬。我答應(yīng)了,而后來(lái)沒(méi)來(lái)得及寫出。又過(guò)了一年,我客居于淮南,才寫下文章送給他的兒子。
