Today, roller skating (滑旱冰) is easy and fun. But many years ago, it wasn’t easy at all. Before 1750, people never tried skating on wheels. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin’s work was making instruments. In his free time he liked to play the violin. Merlin was a man with many ideas and many dreams. People called him a dreamer.
One day Merlin received an invitation to go to an important party. He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think. He wanted to find a way to make a wonderful entrance at the party. Merlin had an idea. He thought that he would attract a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.
Merlin tried different ways to make he roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skate shoes. Merlin was very proud of them. He dreamed of arriving at the party and skating into the room while playing the violin. He was sure that everyone would be very surprised.
On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room, playing his violin. Everyone was really surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skating. I sometimes wonder if old Finchley has the right personality to be a research scientist. He keeps asking when he’ll be coming back. After all, it was his own fault. Nobody tries out what has just been invented on themselves any more but Finchley. Well, he must have pumped about a thousand cc into himself before I noticed he was clearly becoming smaller.
It was funny watching him, because his clothes remained the same in size. They simply piled up around him so that he looked like a small boy in his father’s clothes. But he kept getting smaller and smaller. As my colleague Dawson and I watched him, he disappeared! All we could see was Finchley’s clothes on the floor. They looked so strange, because the lab coat was on top, shirt and trousers inside and, I suppose, underclothes inside again. It gave me a strange feeling, and I think Dawson was a bit shaken, too.
Dawson was sitting on his chair in front of a microscope he’d been using to examine a family of mites(螨). He looked through the scope kind of absently again, and was nearly scared to lose awareness when he found old Finchley waving back from the other end.
It seems as if Finchley had taken a free ride on a dust mite and landed on the land of the mite family. Of course, we didn’t know till Finchley told us later. But anyhow, as I said, Dawson nearly passed out. He jumped off his chair and pointed at the microscope, too shocked to speak.
【小題1】It can be inferred that Finchley, Dawson and the writer have possible invented      .

A.a(chǎn) machine to make people smallB.a(chǎn) new way to study the family of mites
C.a(chǎn) new powerful microscopeD.some kind of medicine

A.he tried out what has just invented on himself
B.his father’s clothes totally covered him up
C.he took something poisonous
D.he was changed into a dust mite
【小題3】It can probably be concluded that Finchley       .
A.will remain tiny all the timeB.is a devoted scientist
C.is not fit to be a scientistD.passed out there and then
【小題4】It frightened Dawson to see Fincley         .
A.got out of his scope by accidentB.was waving through his scope
C.suddenly got lost in his clothesD.gradually disappeared in the lad

“NOW I just don't believe that. ”Surely all of us, at some point, have watched a movie and thought: It's simply badly researched,or the makers must think we're fools. Recently, The Daily Telegraph ran a humorous piece on untrue tech moments from some top movies. Let’s see what they are all about.
Tom Chiver, the writer of The Daily Telegraph uses his first example from the movie Independence Day, in which a character comes up with a virus(病毒)which destroys Windows the computer system the alien (外星人)spacecraft uses. “It's a good thing that they didn't have Norton Anti-virus,” jokes  Chivers.
It's just one case of a movie that takes a lot of license with its science. Another one Chivers mentions is from the movie Star Wars, where the glowing light beams (光束)traveling through space look very impressive. But the problem is that in space there are no air particles (粒子)for the light to reflect off. In reality, they'd be invisible(看不見的), which wouldn’t look so cool on the big screen.
Most people think that the mind—bending Matrix films are made for great viewing. But for Chivers, the science in the movies is a little bit silly. He comments “…the film is based on the idea that humans are kept alive as electricity generators (發(fā)電機). This is not just unlikely —it's basically impossible. They would need more energy to stay alive than they would produce. It's just like saying that you'll power the car with batteries, and keep the batteries charged by running a generator from the wheels. ”
And finally, as Chivers points out, DNA is not replaceable. But this bit of elementary genetics passed the makers of the 2002 Bond film Die Another Day by. In the film the bad guy has “gene treatment” to change his appearance and his DNA, which is completely impossible in our real world.
【小題1】Which of the following does the writer agree with about the movie Independence Day?

A.It's a science fiction movie.
B.It's about the alien spacecraft.
C.It's produced by Tom Chiver.
D.It's a jokey and humorous one.
【小題2】 What is mainly talked about in the 4th paragraph?
A.How we can power the car with batteries.
B.How Tom Chiver thinks of the Matrix films.
C.How humans are kept alive as power generator.
D.How the Matrix films are made for great viewing.
【小題3】Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The movie Star Wars is about the light beams in space.
B.The author doesn't take the science in movies seriously.

D.There is a horrible virus in the movie Independence Day.
【小題4】The underlined word “They” in the 4th paragraph refers to ______.
A.human beings B.car wheels

Are you fond of tomatoes? Bunol, a town in Spain, held its yearly tomato festival on the last Wednesday of August. Thousands and thousands of people made their way from all corners of the world to fight in it, the world’s biggest food fight. Tons of fully-grown tomatoes were thrown in the streets.
No one knows exactly how this event started. Maybe it came from a local food fight between friends, or a joke that was played on a bad musician.
On Wednesday, at 11am, the fight began. A cannon(大炮) shot was fired to start the fight. At first, people fought one another, but slowly they began to fight in groups. After exactly one hour, the fight ended when the cannon shot was fired once more. At this point, no more tomatoes could be thrown.
Those who attend this event are encouraged to wear protective glasses. And they must press the tomatoes before throwing so that they won’t hurt others. Another rule is that no one is allowed to take anything — such as a glass bottle — into the fight. Although it is forbidden to tear(扯破) another person’s clothing, the crowd seems to tear the shirt of any clothed person, whether they are men or women.
Fire trucks are used to clean the streets after the fight with water provided from a Roman channel (海峽). The government seems more concerned with cleaning up the town than the visitors, and people go to the Bunol River for a wash.
