Look around your classroom. Your friends have different colors of hair: red, brown, golden, and black. Some of your friends have curly hair; others have straight hair. Your whole body is covered with hair. You may have to look hard to see some of the hair. Look closely at your arm. It is covered with short thin hairs. Look closely at your face in a mirror. You will see tiny hairs growing there. The most obvious hair on your body is on your head. Your hair and nails are made up of a kind of protein. New hair and nails grow from special cells in your skin. Though the cells that form your hair and nails are alive, the hair and nails themselves are not alive. If hair and nails are not alive, you may ask, why do you need to take care of them? Oil in your skin keeps the hair on your head shiny and healthy. It also makes the hair a little sticky. Dirty things from the air can stick to your hair. The best way to get off this dirt is to wash your hair with shampoo. You should wash your hair every two or three days to keep it clean. Washing your hair more often might cause it to become dry. If your hair is dry, you might need to use a special shampoo or something else. Brushing your hair, especially if it is long, also keeps it from becoming too dry. Your hair grows about 1/2 inch a month. If you’re like to wear your hair short, you need to get it cut from time to time. Your fingernails and toenails cover and help protect the tips of your fingers and toes. Look at the nails on your fingers. You can easily see where the nail comes from under the skin. This is where new nail cells grow. Your nails grow about 1/4 inch each month. Sometimes your nails grow too long. They can catch on your clothing or other objects and break. You should take care of a broken nail. You should also clean away any dirt that collects in your nails. Keeping your nails clean can help prevent disease. 查看更多
