Martin Lynch, an American businessman, had been going on vacation to a small Mexican fishing village for a number of years. One morning while going for a walk along the beach, he saw his friend Pablo Perez, a local fisherman. Martin watched Pablo unload his boat and pack the fish in a box.

Martin noticed Pablo was smiling and looked very happy. He could also see several large fish in the boat. Martin greeted Pablo and asked how long it took to catch the fish. “Just a few hours,” replied Pablo. Martin asked, “why didn’t you stay longer and catch more fish?” “I have enough for my family,” Pablo said, “ And what do you do with the rest of your day?” asked Martin. “I take a nap, play with my children, spend time with my wife, and go into the village to see my friends and play cards. I have a full and busy life.” Martin explained that if Pablo worked longer hours and caught more fish, he could make more money. With the extra money, Pablo could buy more boats and catch many more fish. By selling the fish, Pablo could open his own factory and sell direct to supermarkets.

“Then what?” asked Pablo. “Well you would probably have to move to Mexico City to run the business. Finally, you would be about to sell your business and make millions of dollars,” replied Martin, “ How long will that take?” asked Pablo.

Martin thought for a while and said it would probably take at least 15 years.

“and then what?” asked Pablo.

“well, that’s the best part,” Martin said. “you will be able to retire, buy a house near the ocean, sleep longer, play with your children, spend more time with your wife, see your friends, and play cards.”

Qi Haoran, a Junior 1 student, was quite busy over the past winter vacation – and not just with homework. Qi, together with 10 other classmates made a volunteer group to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign (“光盤行動(dòng)”).

The 11 students went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. “Excuse me, do you know that 950 million people around the world still haven’t got enough to eat? Please don’t waste food.” They would say this kind of thing hundreds of times every day.

The Clean Your Plate Campaign began on the Internet in January. It calls on people to reduce food waste.

China in these years had serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

Chinese people are well known for being hospitable (好客的) and generous(大方的). Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food.

Luckily, the campaign has got the support of many. In a restaurant in Xinjiang, the owner give the guests who have eaten all that they ordered a sticker (貼花). People can enjoy a free meal when they have 10 stickers. More than 750 restaurants in Beijing have begun to offer smaller dishes and encourage their guests to take leftovers (剩飯剩菜) home.

To reduce food waste is a big task, and it needs time. It’s important that everyone does their bit, just like Qi. Did you finish your meals today?

Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?

To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry deserts everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.

Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks of the stones to grow in.

Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.

What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won’t. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.

Charles Chaplin, who died in 1977, is regarded as one of the greatest and funniest actors in the history of
the cinema. During his lifetime, he acted in 13 films, and he wrote, directed (導(dǎo)) and acted in 69 other films.
Chaplin was born in London in 1889. When he was a poor boy, he was often seen waiting outside the
London theatres, hoping to get work in show business. He could sing and dance, and above all, he could make
people laugh. But he couldn't get work, so he wandered (徘徊) about the city streets. Sometimes he was sent
away to a home for children who had no parents.
Charlie Chaplin first acted when he was five. He broke into show business because his mother, a music-
hall performer, lost her voice during the performance and had to leave the stage, and Charlie went on and sang
a well-known song. Halfway through the song a shower of money poured onto the stage. Charlie stopped
singing and told audiences he would pick the money first and then finish the song. The audiences laughed. This
was the first of millions of laughs in Charlie Chaplin's comedy (喜劇) life.
Twenty years later the same Chaplin became the greatest and best loved comedian in the world. His dream
came true in the end. Chaplin became world-famous and almost a king in the world of the film.
Even people who don't understand English can enjoy Chaplin's films because they are mostly silent. The
machine for adding sound to films had not yet been developed. The development of films with sound became a
problem for Chaplin, as he was uncertain about making films with dialogues. Instead, he continued to make films
without dialogue, but he added music, which he wrote himself. It isn't what he says that makes us laugh. His
comedy doesn't depend on (依靠) words. It depends on little actions which mean the same thing to people all
over the world.
Chaplin's later films, however, were not well received. Chaplin lived most of his life in America and the
last years in Switzerland, where he was buried (被埋葬) at Christmas 1977, at the age of eighty-eight. There
was sadness all over the world at the news of his death.
In his book, Chaplin tells us how to succeed in life. He says, "You have to believe in yourself. That's the
secret."
